A British wealth fund manager has been sacked and has fled Singapore after triggering a furious row by mocking poor people on social media.

Anton Casey, 39, caused uproar when it emerged he had called a taxi driver a "retard" and wrote on Facebook of "the stench of public transport".

The Porsche-driving former London banker, who has a five-year-old son and is married to Miss Singapore 2003 Bernice Wong, has now left the city-state after receiving a torrent of death threats and abuse online after his comments were made public.

His employer, wealth management company Crossinvest Asia said in a statement: "Crossinvest Asia is deeply concerned by the recent comments made by Mr. Anton Casey on social media which have caused great distress amongst Singaporeans.

"The online comments made by Mr. Casey do not represent the culture that we have built over many years.

"Accordingly, Crossinvest Asia and Mr Casey have parted ways with immediate effect."

The statement, posted on the company's Facebook page, has now gained more than 1,600 'likes'.

Mr Casey has reportedly been spotted boarding an economy class flight to Australia with his wife and son after the backlash in Singapore.

In one post on Facebook, he had uploaded a picture of his son on a Metro train alongside the caption: "Daddy, where is your car & who are all these poor people?"

Another image showed the boy sitting in a silver Porsche sports car, and was posted alongside the message: "Ahhhhhhhh reunited with my baby. Normal service can resume, once I have washed the stench of public transport off me."

In a statement issued last week he said: "I would like to extend a sincere apology to the people of Singapore. I have the highest respect and regard for Singapore and the good people of Singapore; this is my home.

"I wish for nothing more than to be forgiven for my poor judgment and given a second chance to rebuild the trust people have had in me as a resident of this wonderful country."
