Even for an actor famed for his diverse roles, it could not have been more out of character.

Half-concealed behind shades, a bald wig and plenty of stomach padding, Tom Cruise wowed the audience at last night's MTV Movie Awards with a hilarious, energetic and carefully choreographed dance routine with Jennifer Lopez.

Grossed out: Tom Cruise reprises his Tropic Thunder role as the fat, foul-mouthed Hollywood producer Les Grossman for a crazy hip hop dance routine with Jennifer Lopez

The Los Angeles audience, including Cruise's wife Katie Holmes, gave the pair a standing ovation for a routine that saw J-Lo slap Cruise's bottom — while forbidding him doing the same to her.

Cruise, 47, reprising the foul-mouthed fictional movie producer Les Grossman he played in Ben Stiller's spoof Vietnam war film Tropic Thunder, even attempted the splits. The dance, performed to hip hop star Ludacris's Get Back, is set to become an internet sensation.

Sandra Bullock set tongues wagging when she accepted the MTV Generation award by kissing Scarlett Johansson. It was her first public appearance for three months since she won the Oscar for best actress for The Blind Side. Since then, she has split up with her unfaithful husband, Jesse James. Responding to tabloid rumours, she said: "No 1: I'm not dead."

After kissing Johansson, a smiling Bullock said: "Now that we have done that, can we please go back to normal?" She added: "I love what I do. I'm not going anywhere."
