Hi, I have decided to go on a diet because I want to lose few extra pounds. This is not the first time I have done this. I would usually starve myself for few weeks and I would lose the unwonted pounds. However, a friend of mine has recently told me that this kind of weight loss is not healthy. She says that with this diet I am not losing fat, but protein. What is the protein role in fat loss?

Hi, your friend is right. Starving yourself is not a good way to lose weight. When you go on this regime of nourishment your organism changes its metabolism. It recognizes this state as a threat and reacts to it. When you starve yourself, your organism actually saves fat and burns muscle mass. That is why when you want to lose weight you shouldn't starve. You need to have a well balanced low fat, low carb and high protein diet combined with aerobic workout. Proteins are very important for muscle work. When your muscles get their energy from proteins, you will be able to burn excess fat through the workout. So to answer your question, proteins have a very important role in fat loss. Without the proteins in your diet, you will not lose fat, but actually muscle mass.
