I searched the answer in the forum without luck so here is the question:

were there two different versions of the WM-W800 double decker bus player?

As I have been able to see roaming freely on google there is a version with the "full door" and a version with a cut on the side of the door and maybe a door locking mechanism.

Lacking better options I'm linking two pages from the web trying not to infringe nobody's copyright.

    Full door
    http://www.walkmancentral.com/products/wm-w800

    Cut door
    https://www.sony.net/Fun/design/history/product/1980/wm-w800.html

They do appear to have the same name albeit different chassis.

Pardon me if all I've written above it's just a newbie obvious matter. Bully me as you please :)

    well, I can answer you

WM-W800 comes in 3 different colors: Gray, Silver and Red.
Sony made a tuner pack that works with 4 walkmans WM-W800 is one of them and as you can see on A side of walkman the door is designed the way that allow you to work with radio buttons

If you look at this picture you don't see that feature and i think this will answer your question

I am not at home to show you better picture but if you still have any concern let me know and i will place more pictures with details where the tuner pack connections communicate with walkman ( some WM-W800 have this part and some don't)

So in order to use the tuner pack you have to change the door entirely?

No really. Thats not the solution since you need the tuner connection in the unit.
I will take some pictures today once i get home to show you the actual tuner connection.

Ok. Look at the circled part to see the difference between 2 different versions of WM-W800
So even if you change the Walkman door still will need the connection to use the tuner pack
I hope that I explained well. Let me know if you need additional info

Ok. See in this picture why the Walkman door should be different in order to use the tuner cassette. I placed the tuner cassette inside the Walkman and you can see that I can change the station using thieve controllers

Another important thing is when you place the tuner pack in order to have a good connection between the tuner cassette and the Walkman connections the Walkman door should kept tight. That’s why these models have the appropriate lock to keep the door locked while using the tuner ( or even playing cassette on this side).

As you see your Walkman lacks these 2 parts
But as I said you can still play the tuner in your Walkman because you have the connection to the tuner pack.
But you need to keep the Walkman door open, have access to the dial, adjust the station and close the Walkman door and listen to radio
But there is another issue (annoying issue), there is no lock on your Walkman door to hold the tuner tight to connections. So if the connection come loose the radio stops and your Walkman start playing like it is a real cassette is inside and obviously what you hear is just the motor running.

So your Walkman can play the tuner but it is not ideal way of listening to radio.
Let me know if you need additional information.
