The Body Shop’s new flagship store is a sustainable beauty lover’s wonderland

The newly revamped Oxford Street store is now open to the public. Here’s what to expect when you visit.

The Body Shop is a brand filled with nostalgia. Whether you have fond memories of bath pearls, those little animal-shaped flannels that expanded in water or Dewberry body spray, the majority of people have memories attached to it.

Over the last few years it’s had something of a resurgence. That’s not to say the brand physically went anywhere, but instead it’s started to shout louder about everything it stands for and all the work it’s doing in terms of sustainability and activism.

In fact, earlier this year Stylist’s beauty editor went to Ghana to meet women who make Shea butter for The Body Shop and to find out how exactly how Community Trade directly impacts the lives that they live

The brand has also committed to discontinuing face wipes and has re-launched its recycling scheme. Its latest move is the renovation of its flag ship, central London store which opened its doors yesterday (17 September) is proof of that. Located slap bang in the middle of Oxford Street – right opposite Bond Street tube station and just a few minutes’ walk from Selfridges, and truly, every detail has been thought about.

It features one of the high-street’s first DIY refill stations: for just £6 you can buy an aluminium bottle, fill it up with one of the shower gels on tap (at the minute there’s a choice between British Rose, Almond Milk and Honey, Juicy Pear or Rich Plum). Then, once you’ve run out all you need to do is wash out the bottle at home, take it back into store so it can be sanitised properly and then re-fill it again for £4.

The store has plenty of sustainable fixtures, too. Not only is it fitted with green materials like reclaimed wood and recycled plastic, but it also has zinc façade cladding (which requires less energy for production than other metals and is produced from recycled materials) along with EKOply worktop surfaces manufactured from 100% recycled material destined for landfill, and stood made from reclaimed steal and recycled wood. Even the drawers underneath shelving units have been upcycled from a UK car seat manufacturer.

Then there’s ‘activism corner’ where customers can learn about The Body Shop’s roots and how its fighting for a fairer world, as well as finding out how they can get involved. And, alongside all the well-loved, iconic products from The Body Shop, there’s the all-important water station that you can use to fill up your bottle.

Go forth and shop (while staying hydrated) to your heart’s content.

The Body Shop, 374 Bond Street, London, W1C 1JR is now open.
