Hurricane Sally is pounding the Gulf Coast with powerful winds and heavy rains.
The National Hurricane Center said the center of the eye of Sally moved onshore near Gulf Shores early Wednesday morning. The storm is packing winds of 105 mph, making it a Category 2.
Much of southern Alabama is under a tornado watch with the possibility for a few tornadoes, hail and winds up to 70 mph.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association said the storm is creating the possibility of “historic and catastrophic flooding” along and inland[LG1] of the coast from the west of Tallahassee, Florida to Mobile Bay. A life-threatening storm surge is expected to occur along the portions of the coastline from Alabama to the western Florida Panhandle, including Pensacola Bay and the southern portions of Mobile Bay.
Hurricane conditions are expected Wednesday morning and then continuing into the afternoon along the Mississippi and Alabama coastlines and the western Florida Panhandle.
