Readers, welcome to heaven – also known as the new Fresh Market Hall at Harrods. Just opened as part of the enormous Harrods Food Hall face-lift project, it’s the place to go for the fulfilment of your wildest foodie dreams. Or for your weekly grocery shop, if you’re the sort of person to fill your fridge with nothing but the very best of the best.
Because everything in this colourfully tiled, cavernous hall is exactly that – from the milk, sourced from a tiny farm with only 120 cows, to smoked-salmon from the Faroe Islands, to the Wagyu beef at the butcher (grade 5 only), to the truffle selection, displayed under glass like rare jewels, to Cinco Jotas ham, with whom Harrods has an exclusive first-pick deal. Everything is about exclusivity and rarity. As well as about making life a bit easier for customers: the colourful array of seasonal fruit and vegetables is supplemented by the brilliant Vegetable Butchery, with a selection of delicious pre-prepared vegetable dishes; the cheese shop will bespoke a truffle cheese for you; the butchers will whip you up a Beef Wellington and the fishmongers the ultimate home-made fish fingers.
At the centre of it all is the Deli, where the 150-strong team of in-house Harrods chefs have worked their magic. It’s a one-stop shop for exceptional food – be it British classics like steak and kidney pie and scotch eggs or Middle Eastern mezze. There’s fresh pasta from Pasta Evangelists, Indian classics by Vineet Bhatia, incredible sushi by Chaisan and, of course, Caviar House’s Balik salmon. Plus, there’s the world’s smartest selection of ready-meals, all prepared in-house and oven-ready. Truffle mac and cheese, anyone?
If you’re popping in for lunch, head straight to the Rotisserie, for the ultimate chicken sandwich, or to the salad and sandwich bar for something special. All the bread is baked in the Roastery & Bake Hall next door (where you should 1000% head for pudding) – and makes for brilliant sandwiches, from the decadent truffle toastie, to the lobster and crab brioche to the Harrods club. We’ll see you in the queue.
