The summer always seems to bring out the very best in Maine, and our exciting three-day auction on August 27, 28 & 29 will showcase many of our finest discoveries, all gathered from estates and collections from throughout Maine and the Northeast.

 

On Saturday, master works by Albert Bierstadt, Alfred Thompson Bricher, William Bradford, Thomas Buttersworth, William Trost Richards, Francis Augustus Silva, Robert Salmon, Thomas Doughty Albert Herter, Edward Willis Redfield, Aldro Hibbard, SFM Badger, William Howard Yorke, and many other fine artists will be presented, along with groups of early ecclesiastical sculptures and antiquities. This day will also feature an 1832 fire pumper engine and early hose reel cart, plus important folk art, such as a 19th c. cigar store Indian and 18th c. Massachusetts tavern sign. Fine antique furniture, carpets, and an extensive ship model and nautical collection will round out the day.

 

Sunday’s sale will include important artwork by Kurt Schwitters, Neil Welliver, Imero Gobbato, Carroll Thayer Berry, Marguerite Zorach, William Thon, John Moore, Waldo Peirce, Kenneth Noland, Howard Chandler Christy, Marc Chagall and many others; plus photography by Clarence White & Alfred Stieglitz, Anne Brigman, and Edward Steichen. There will be a large sculpture group, including works by Carl Kauba, Charles Greenough “Chippy” Chase, Forest Hart, and Cabot Lyford.  There will be an extensive estate jewelry and watch collection, including a 2.94 carat diamond ring. And, many outstanding silver lots, including pieces by Tiffany & Co. from the Mabel Evans Dodge Sterne Luhan estate, will be presented, along with a fine collection of porcelain and glass, including examples by Meissen, Sevres, Rookwood, L. C. Tiffany and Galle. We will offer a diverse array of decorative items, such as early lighting, clocks, plus wicker, cast iron, contemporary, and Arts & Crafts furniture. And finally, five canoes will be sold on this day.   

 

On Monday, we will feature the former MBNA Corporate Collection of contemporary Maine and New England paintings, including works by Theodore Tihansky, Scott Moore, William Brewster Hoyt, Frederick Kubitz, Frank Handlen, Jeffrey Colquhoun, Ronal Parlin, Donald Crosby Brown, and many others.  Art pottery will be a focus, as we present an extensive collection of Brother Thomas Bezanson art pottery and an important selection of Japanese works.  Chinese porcelain, jade carvings, cinnabar objects, bronze sculpture, furniture and textiles will be offered, along with a large group of Japanese woodblock prints.
