Early Morning Garage Fire Causes Injuries To Male Resident

FREMONT – The Fremont Fire Department responded to a garage fire early Tuesday morning at 125 N. Bell Street.
FFD received the call at 7:35 am and upon arrival, the Fremont Police Department was helping two individuals out of the residence.
Fremont Fire Captain, Pat Tawney, said one of the individuals was not wearing any shoes and she was escorted quickly to a vehicle to get out of the cold.
The other individual was a male whose injuries included severe facial burns and smoke inhalation. Tawney said the male opened the door from the house into the garage and they believe he may have been trying to put out the fire himself before fire personnel arrived causing the injuries. There are no updates available on the conditions of the two individuals at this time.
Eight firefighters responded to the call. They had four firefighters working on the fire while two stayed at the fire hydrants and the other two tended to the individuals that had been in the home.
Tawney said the fire did not take long to extinguish.
“We had the fire doused and contained by about 8:10 am. The fire was caused by combustibles that were too close to heat materials. There was actually a propane tank running in the garage and when the fire erupted it also ignited a couch that was in there,” said Tawney.
As the couch was engulfed by the flames, it caused the fire to burn into the north wall of the garage. Firefighters were able to pull the insulation from the wall and put out the fire.
The fire did reach into the attic of the garage, but Tawney said that it was easily accessible and firefighters had no trouble extinguishing it before it caused more damage.
Early estimates show roughly $15,000 in structural damage according to Captain Tawney,  but he said it will most likely be more after final estimates come in. There was no damage reported to the house that was attached to the garage.
The Fremont Fire Department was finally able to get out of the frigid temperatures and return to the station at roughly 9:30 this morning.
