Ingredients to make a cherry smoothie
There's just 5 ingredients in this heavenly cherry smoothie recipe. There's lots of wiggle room to make this smoothie exactly how you like it, which we'll go over in the section called “substitutions and additions” but you can't go wrong with these 5 simple ingredients either!
- Cherries: You can use fresh or frozen, with the pits removed. You'll need 2 cups. Using dark cherries will give you that incredible magenta-colored smoothie. Lighter cherries will produce a subtle pink color.
- Banana: Again, you can use one, fresh or frozen banana for this cherry smoothie recipe. The banana will add a nice creamy texture and complement the tartness of the cherries.
- Yogurt: You can use your favorite yogurt, whether it's plain yogurt, vanilla greek yogurt, dairy-free yogurt — all are good options!
- Almond butter: Adding almond butter to this cherry smoothie makes it taste like a real treat! It also adds some protein and a rich, nutty flavor.
- Vanilla: This is optional, to add a teaspoon of vanilla extract. It will add some sweetness and floral note to the smoothie. If you don't have any at home, you can leave it out.
How to make a cherry smoothie
It's best to use a high-speed blender to make this cherry smoothie as velvety as possible. This cherry smoothie recipe makes two smoothies (or one giant smoothie if you're in the mood!) Here's how to make it:
- Pour all of the ingredients into a blender.
- Blend on high until it's smooth. If you want a thinner consistency you can add some water.
- Pour into 1 or 2 glasses and enjoy!

Substitutions and additions
Using this cherry smoothie recipe you will have yourself one delightful drink! That said, if you want to substitute or add ingredients it's extremely versatile. Here are some options:
- Nut butter: You can use another nut butter if you don't have almond butter on hand. Peanut butter will also work!
- Veggies: You can toss in some spinach, avocado (although perhaps technically a fruit?), kale or beets all go well in this recipe.
- Fruit: You can add other types of fruit if you wish, like berries, orange, or pineapple. Some fruits have a higher sugar contents than others and can make the smoothie sweeter. If you want to keep the cherry flavor, consider toning down adding other fruits.
- Chocolate: Cherries and chocolate are a beautiful combination. You can add cocoa powder or cacao nibs to create a chocolate cherry smoothie.
- Dairy-free: Using dairy-free yogurt will make this a dairy-free, vegan cherry smoothie recipe. If you like your smoothies thinner, you can also add some unsweetened almond milk, coconut milk, or any other non-dairy milk to achieve this.
- Other smoothie additions: Adding chia seeds, hemp seeds, flaxseed, or your other favorite smoothie ingredients are always welcome in this cherry smoothie!
