Should the Falcons be worried about Jake Matthews?

The Falcons ranked 31st in Pro Football Focus' roster rankings — a list they compiled for ESPN Insider. If you recall, PFF ranked Atlanta's roster 30th last year.

Among the players PFF said the Falcons needed to upgrade: left tackle Jake Matthews, the sixth overall selection in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Make no mistake about it: Matthews struggled mightily in his first year in the league.

But with that said, there are a few things wrong with naming him as a starter who needs to be replaced.

As ESPN's Vaughn McClure points out, Matthews should've been sidelined for four to six weeks after he suffered a high ankle sprain late in the second quarter in the season opener versus the New Orleans Saints.

The decision to let Matthews tough it out undoubtedly hurt him but his play picked up as he got healthier, although he — and every starter on the offensive line — performed rather poorly against the Carolina Panthers in the season finale.

By PFF's own admission, rookie left tackles typically struggle, with the best-case scenarios being Jake Long or Joe Thomas.

A clean bill of health combined with the move to a zone blocking scheme should mean marked improvement for Matthews in his second season.

Should the left tackle's rookie struggles give the Falcons pause for the upcoming season? The answer's an emphatic "no."
