Hyderabad: The Krishna River Management Board (KRMB), which met here on Saturday, decided to allocate 15 tmc ft of water to Telangana State and 36 tmc ft to Andhra Pradesh. Addressing a press conference, Member-Secretary Sameer Chatterjee said that the allocation would be valid till September end.
He said Andhra Pradesh would get 10 tmc ft to Krishna Delta System (KDS) to meet the present water demands of the standing crops, 10 tmc ft for Nagarjunasagar Project Right Main Canal. Similarly, 2 tmc ft for the Left Canal of Nagarjunasagar, 4.54 tmc ft for Handri- Neeva Sujala Sravanthi (HNSS) and 10 tmc ft of water to Pothireddi Padu, which includes the requirements of the Telugu Ganga.
Likewise, 15 tmc ft of water allocated to Telangana State would be released from Nagarjunasagar Left Canal, he added. Though the AP allocation appears to be more, the KRMB would ensure that the 63:37 ratio of allocation of water between the two states would be maintained in a water year, he clarified.
It may be mentioned here that earlier while the AP had demanded 47 tmc ft of water, the TS had asked for 41 tmc ft. However, the allocation was made basing on the current available water of 154 tmc ft of water in all projects over the Krishna delta.
While the AP has agreed for 36 tmc ft of water keeping in view the water demands to sustain 5.6 lakh irrigated dry crops in the current kharif in Krishna delta, the TS has reportedly agreed to the allocation to provide water to the crops under the NSP left canal. However, the decision was taken expecting a favourable trend predicted that more inflows in the coming days during the current monsoon season.
