Warning: This article contains spoilers for Red White & Royal Blue.
Casey McQuiston’s beloved gay romance novel Red, White & Royal Blue finally received the Hollywood treatment this past weekend with a new film adaptation premiering on Prime Video. Directed by Tony winner Matthew Lopez, it depicts the unlikely, high-profile romance between Alex (Taylor Zakhar Perez), the son of the fictional first female President (Uma Thurman), and English Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine, who, it must be noted, also played a prince in the cinematic event that was Prime Video’s Camila Cabello-led Cinderella).
The Red, White & Royal Blue film makes some key changes from the original book but still has plenty to offer old and new fans alike: Romance tropes galore! A sexy reminder of the fact that, yes, queer men can do missionary! Uma Thurman’s attempt at a Southern accent!
While Alex and Henry don’t pull a full Harry and Meghan, the duo unsurprisingly ride off into the figurative sunset by the end, into a fairytale future where a Truvada-loving Democratic president can somehow win Texas but lose Pennsylvania. Dream big, kids!
For fans craving more of the duo, though, we have some bad news: A Red, White & Royal Blue sequel isn’t currently in the works. However, there seems to be a decent chance that you might see the continuing adventures of Alex and Henry in print somewhere down the line.
“I will say that I have plenty of ideas for stories set in this world and would love a chance to explore them someday,” McQuiston told Hello Magazine in September 2019. “I would be surprised if you’ve seen the last of Henry.” They said that while they weren’t working on anything set in the Red, White & Royal Blue universe, “anything’s possible.”
In the meantime, fans looking for more Alex and Henry content will be happy to know that the 2022 Collector’s Edition of the original novel features an exclusive Prince Henry POV chapter set a few years after the events of the original story. This peek into their life together is particularly exciting considering that aspiring politico himbo Alex narrates the events of the original novel. Here’s hoping that the future exploits of this Gen Z people’s prince and his First Son boyfriend will make it onto our screens (and our group chats) in the near future. Will Henry and Alex’s wedding be at the center of another cake-related international relations scandal someday? We can only hope so.
