Superlist

Retail that contributes to a healthy and sustainable food environment

Shopping basket

In Western Europe, nine out of ten people visit supermarkets on a weekly basis and a majority of their daily food is purchased in a supermarket. This gives these companies an important role in society. As key gate keepers of the food system, supermarkets determine the environmental and ethical standards in food production to a large degree , as well as the quality standards of the products consumers can choose from. Supermarkets also constitute an important part of our 'food environment'. Offer, price, promotions, store layout, and even the recommended recipes within store magazines, all greatly influence consumer behaviour.

Our Superlist programme supports supermarkets in stepping up and shifting their strategies and actions towards buying and selling healthy and sustainably produced food.

Superlist is a multi-year international programme, aiming to to drive transparency, accountability, and progress in aligning retail practices with goals on sustainability, healthy diets and respecting humans and labour rights.

Superlist supports supermarkets in stepping up and shifting their strategies by providing a benchmark of supermarket performances in the domains of policy, assortment, promotions and store design. Moreover it provides practical recommendations for improvement for individual supermarkets.

Superlist projects are executed on national level and alternate on the themes: health, climate & biodiversity and human rights.

In each country the program engages stakeholders, including supermarkets, scientists, civil society and policymakers. The parties involved can be found in the reports and webpages providing information on the individual Superlist projects.

The Superlist programme is gradually rolled out in Europe, starting in countries with the largest European retailers.
