Wayne Rooney’s £20m Cheshire mansion still under construction as he completes shock Derby transfer

BUILDERS face a race to get Wayne Rooney's £20million Cheshire mansion finished after the England legend today agreed to make a shock move to Derby County in January.

The country house, just over an hour away from his new Pride Park base, is still under construction, according to the latest pictures.

Wayne Rooney cites his family as the main reason for becoming player-coach at Derby County

DC United forward Rooney today signed an 18-month contract with the Rams after wife Coleen said she wanted to raise their family in the UK - not in Washington.

Earlier today, Roo - England's all-time leading scorer - arrived at Derby's training ground to conclude talks over the 18-month deal, which will have the option of another year.

After sealing the switch, which will see him stay in the MLS until December, he said: "I am very excited about the opportunity that Derby County have provided me with.

"I am looking forward to joining Phillip Cocu, his coaching staff and the first-team squad from the start of January.

"I am sure I can make a big contribution and can’t wait to meet everyone, especially the supporters.

"I am equally excited to begin my coaching career at Derby County working with both the first team and Academy.

"I must also take this opportunity to thank DC United, their owners, executives and supporters, who have been superb to work with.

"I want them to know that I will give my all in support of our push for the play-offs."

Burnley boss Sean Dyche was also keen to bring Rooney home and offer Premier League football close to the family's Merseyside roots.

The Clarets would also have provided a shorter commute from the "Morrisons-looking" Cheshire mansion - which still looks like a building site.

What will Rooney's new home be like?

By Alex  Matthews

CREWS are still working on the 40-acre plot which will include a number of buildings, stables, two man-made fishing lakes and an orangery.

It is also believed that Rooney has requested a panic bunker be built into the home over fears of his family will be hit by another burglary.

The Rooney's left their old house in Prestbury, Cheshire, after a thief tried to break in while Wayne played in a testimonial match in August 2016.

Ex-Man United legend Wayne has now requested an outbuilding be built near his new pad's entrance.

It will have a CCTV monitoring room, kitchen and toilet for a guard and a secure pick-up area.

Inside the mansion, the lower ground floor will be a TV room, snooker room, bar, wine store, cinema, gym, spa bath, swimming pool, plunge pool and steam room.

The main entrance and reception halls, kitchen, dining room, family room, study and library will be on the ground floor.

The new "Wayne’s World" will even boast an underground tunnel to his enormous garage for six cars so he doesn’t have to get his hair wet if it rains.

In order to avoid the social faux pas of using the couple’s own downstairs loo, there is a ‘guest toilet’ and even separate lifts – one for the family, the other for visitors.

The new property is expected to be the place the family settles in once Wayne retires.

Rooney's family struggled to settle on the East Coast of America after making the move last June following his second spell at Everton.

Rooney's wife Coleen wanted to return to their native North West after missing her friends and family while living in Bethesda, Maryland, on the outskirts of Washington.

The couple have four kids, Kai, nine, Klay, six, Kit, three, and Cass, who was born in February last year.

The transfer means they can move back to a UK school ahead of the new term - although Roo will have to stay in the US.

Morris wants Rooney as a player-coach after hiring Phillip Cocu to replace Frank Lampard.
