Cornwall copies Iceland’s Blue Lagoon with new geothermal heated sea pool – and it’s as warm as a bath
FORGET Iceland - the first geothermal heated lido in the UK has opened in Cornwall.
With temperatures around 35C, the natural salt water pool will be heated all year around, making it perfect as the temperature drops.
The long-awaited pool has opened at the art deco lido Jubilee Pool in Penzance.
With the best views - the pool sticks out over the sea with St Michael's Mount across the water - the pool is heated by geothermal energy.
The heating works by drawing warm water from a geothermal well, before transferring the heat to the pool and putting cooler water back into the ground.
This is similar to Iceland's popular Blue Lagoon tourist attraction.
Jubilee Pool is the UK's largest lido and can usually fit up to 50 people at one time, although social-distancing guidelines mean only 15 can visit at a time.
- Three nights at Cornwall cottages and apartments with Snaptrip - from £115
- Three nights at Haven in Cornwall - from £59
Future deals could include package trips such as "geothermal and fizz" or "geothermal and dine", with spa treatments including facials and massages also part of the plans.
Adult-only sessions are from 10am to 12:30pm every day, with select evenings after 5:30pm.
All ages are welcome during the afternoon. Adult ticket start from £11.75 for an adult while kids under four go free.
Ryan Law, managing director of Geothermal Engineering Limited told local media:: "The system we have drilled and installed is one of the lowest forms of carbon heating available and is part of the growing movement to use sustainable heating sources across the UK.
"I’m delighted that the geothermal pool at Jubilee Pool, Penzance, is now open. It’s the first geothermally-heated lido in the UK and is a flagship for geothermal energy in general."
