What do you do with fresh blackberries?
That is a good question, and it seems there are approximately zero blackberry recipes in any of my old cook books. I searched high and low. And then I found one fresh blackberry recipe for cake. I was all set to make it, and then…Dad requested a cobbler.
How can you do no to your Dad? I can’t…
So I opened up my cookbooks…again, and I started searching cobbler recipes.
I ended up finding a peach cobbler recipe in my Caterin’ to Charleston cookbook, so I modified it. The dessert came out amazing! So amazing, in fact, that I made this Old South Blackberry Cobbler recipe two days in a row.

Recipe FAQs
- I use butter in my blackberry cobbler, but margarine would work too. 1/2 cup of butter equals 1 stick.
- Taste your blackberries before adding sugar. If they are super sweet, you may be able to use a little less, and if they are super tart, you may want to add a touch more.
- FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS: Only add the sweetened blackberries to the center of the batter, not around the edges if you can avoid it. The sugar from the blackberries will cause the edge of the homemade blackberry cobbler to get dark and hard from the sugar burning.
- Use blueberries, strawberries, peaches or raspberries instead, or a combination.
- This from scratch blackberry cobbler is great as is but is also amazing topped with vanilla ice cream, whipped topping, or with a little drizzle of cold milk right over top (a tip from my Dad).

I made this today. It’s an easy recipe and it was very good! I love blackberries and was excited to see this! Have a good day ๐
So glad you enjoyed it.
Extremely delicious with low effort. I only had 1 cup of blackberries, so I added 1 cup of frozen raspberries and it turned out great! Mine only took 35 minutes in the oven. Highly recommend serving with either milk or vanilla ice cream.
Itโs too hard to find the recipe in this confusing website. Itโs too bad because it sounds like a good recipe, but I never found out how much flour you use. Tighten it up.
There is a โJump to Recipeโ button at the top of the post that takes you directly to the recipe card with ingredients and instructions. Thanks!
I wonder why you had a problemโฆ I found it easily .., making it now !
Sounds fabulous! The first recipe I found that uses a 9 x 13 pan! All the others used 8 x 8 or 9 x 9. Have you ever added cinnamon to the batter? I do that with peach cobbler but have not with blackberry. Thanks for sharing!
We haven’t added cinnamon to this recipe but don’t think it would hurt anything! We agree that cinnamon is yummy with peach cobbler though!
self rising flour or plain flour ?
All purpose flour!
I used self rising. Just eliminate the baking powder and salt!
Sounds YUMMY!!!! I will be making this for July 4th. Do you use all purpose flour? Thanks!
Yes, all-purpose flour!
Thanks!!!! And, great tip about the frozen berries!!!
Oh, and I will be using triple mix berries, frozen. Do you see any changes to the recipe based on that????? Thanks!
You might want to adjust the sugar depending on the sweetness of your berries. Also, be sure the fruit is thawed and drained.
really great tasty cobbler and quick prep. Since I have found this recipe I don’t use any other. I always thaw my frozen berries out and let them set with the sugar overnight. Also believe that real butter is key in this recipe. yummy!
So glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing!
My daddy always put milk over his cobbler. That is how I was raised to eat them. I am making blackberry and peach cobbler and strawberry pie for our 4th family gathering. Thank you for sharing your recipe and stories
Love that your dad enjoys his cobbler the same way ours does! Happy 4th to you and your family!
Where is the oven temperature listed?
Itโs in the recipe card at the bottom of the post!
