The 2025 Flower and Plant of the Year Just Dropped—and We Want to Order Them Immediately

If you're looking for another excuse to buy more flowers and houseplants, we've got you covered. 1-800-Flowers, the online flower delivery website, just announced their picks for 2025's Flower and Plant of the Year—and you'll want to pick up both immediately.

For the Flower of the Year, their pick is the ranunculus—one of my personal favorite flowers—and the Plant of the Year is the snake plant.

In a press release, Alfred Palomares, Vice President of Merchandising, explained their reasoning behind this year's choices.

"The ranunculus, with its vibrant petals, reflects enthusiasm, love, admiration, and happiness, while the snake plant represents longevity, health, and growth," he said. "Beyond their striking beauty, these choices offer a meaningful gift that nurtures relationships and promotes well-being—exactly what we’re all wishing for in the year ahead.”

2025 Flower of the Year: Ranunculus

Ranunculus is one of Spruce editors' favorite flowers for a host of reasons. It comes in a wide array of beautiful, colorful options—from crisp whites to peachy pinks through to deep maroons and more—and with its layers upon layers of petals, it's an approachable alternative to roses for flower arrangements.

They make a gorgeous display on their own, or as part of a mixture with your other favorite flowers.

But ranunculi are not just a great flowers for bouquets—you can also grow them fairly easily in your garden.

As you start to plan your spring garden, consider adding ranunculus plants in your beds or in pots; they should be planted in late winter or early spring. Be sure to choose a spot with plenty of sunlight (six to eight hours a day) so your plants produce plenty of blooms.

2025 Plant of the Year: Snake Plant

Another Spruce favorite, the snake plant might be the easiest houseplant to grow, making it an excellent option for any home.

They require very little care, thriving in low-light conditions and with very little water. In fact, snake plants are best left alone as much as possible to prevent overwatering and root rot.

Snake plant comes in plenty of varieties as well, and can make a nice small tabletop plant or a striking, large floor plant.

"2025 not only marks the year of the snake plant but it is also the Year of the Snake in the Chinese Zodiac—a sign that makes this selection even more meaningful," said the press release.
