Whether you’re shopping for a new living room couch, a durable bed frame, a spacious dining room table, or a comfy office chair, you have a lot of choices across different styles, price points, and retailers. As someone who’s spent years shopping for furniture to fill her apartments and houses, I know just how vast the market is—and how the best places to buy furniture really vary depending on your unique needs.

In my experience, the best places to buy furniture are often larger retailers. While smaller shops can offer more unique or one-of-a-kind pieces, you’ll have better luck finding pieces to suit any aesthetic at online or brick-and-mortar stores with wide selections. Bigger retailers can offer more upholstery options, customization for pieces large and small, and typically better trial periods or more flexible return policies than smaller ones.

As you shop for items to fill the rooms of your home, consider the following places to buy furniture—they’re not only retailers I’ve personally shopped, but also ones our team heads to again and again for reliable, budget-friendly, and statement-making pieces.

Home to beautifully designed, well-built furniture with a modern aesthetic, Article is one of my favorite places to shop for furniture of all kinds. Clean lines dominate the couches, chairs, coffee tables, and bed frames sold here, which makes it easy to find a place for them in just about any home.

Article is one of my favorite places to buy couches and lounge chairs, which we’ve tested here at The Spruce. We’ve tested several of the brand’s couches over the years, like the Sven Sofa and Nordby Sofa Bed, and we love their comfort, customization choices, and simple assembly.

While Article doesn’t offer as many customization options as some larger retailers on our list, like Pottery Barn or Crate & Barrel, the few choices available do suit many different tastes. You may not be able to customize every sofa configuration, but you can choose your upholstery, shop modular seating, and even find sleeper sofas in the ever-growing selection.

And with reasonable pricing across the board, including $49 flat-rate Front Door Delivery, Article’s dining room, bedroom, and office furniture is worth a glance, too. While there isn’t a big selection of pieces in aesthetics outside of modern, the sleek and simple designs are nicely versatile.

When it comes to the best places to buy furniture, no list is complete without Pottery Barn, in my opinion. It’s a brand that’s been around for more than 70 years, and for good reason: Pottery Barn’s furniture is well-made, durable, and beautiful. And with an impressively large selection of items large and small, you can decorate your entire home with pieces from this retailer.

I love browsing Pottery Barn’s impressive collection of items, which includes pieces like classic sleigh bed frames, modern couches with clean lines, and decorative accents like mirrors, rugs, and even throw blankets. But if you’re solely shopping for furniture, it’s the big-ticket items that really wow here. We’ve tested the Cameron Roll Arm Sofa for more than two years, and it’s continued to impress us with its comfort and durability.

I personally love the almost-endless customization options available for couches, sleeper sofas, and accent chairs; even dining tables and chairs can be mixed and matched. Best of all, you can check out Pottery Barn’s pieces in a local store (if there’s one near you) or through its selection of fabric swatches and samples.

Furniture here is also made with standout craftsmanship so each piece is built for long-term wear and tear, and many also feature responsibly-sourced materials like FSC-certified or reclaimed wood and Greenguard Gold certified fabrics, plus Fair Trade certified manufacturing.

If it’s a massive selection of furniture across all different styles, price points, and sizes that you’re searching for, Wayfair is where you’ll find exactly that. Home to thousands of different pieces of furniture both small and large (plus tons of related home goods and accessories), Wayfair offers an almost endless supply of options. No matter your style or your home’s aesthetic, you can find just about anything here.

My favorite aspect of shopping at Wayfair is the variety available across every price point. If you’re searching for budget-friendly furniture, Wayfair has it in the form of couches under $500, dining tables under $100, and even low-priced bed frames, bookshelves, and more. If you have more wiggle room in your budget, you can also browse a great selection of higher-priced products.

Additionally, you’ll find a wide range of brands, materials, and color or upholstery choices across Wayfair’s ever-growing product offerings. I love that you can opt for solid hardwood furniture if you’re searching for durability, or choose a mix of MDF and solid hardwood for a lower price. With plenty of patterns, bold and neutral color choices, and furniture that’s modern, mid-century, industrial, farmhouse, and more, there’s truly something for everyone.

Just keep in mind that pricing can really vary from month to month at Wayfair. With frequent sales, pricing on the items you’re shopping can change often, and so too can product availability. Quality and ease of assembly will vary from product to product, too.

You can find all different kinds of furniture on Amazon to meet your needs, whatever they might be. With a seemingly endless supply of different pieces, like office chairs, standing desks, couches, accent chairs, and bed frames, you can browse and shop just about every type of furniture here.

Although you’re less likely to find premium materials like leather or solid hardwoods on Amazon, most items ship for free and arrive quickly. If you’re looking for apartment-friendly furniture or options for kids, you’ll find plenty of choices here. Amazon’s furniture may not be built for life, but it is a great resource for short-term pieces, accents, or even budget-friendly larger furniture.

Just keep in mind that since there’s so much to see on Amazon, you’ll need to do some digging to find the best pieces. The sheer volume of products can be overwhelming, so I like to shop for complimentary pieces here, like ottomans, storage benches, or entertainment centers.

I also highly recommend taking a close look at the return policy, trial period, and shipping details for every piece you’re considering on Amazon. While some furniture may ship free (and is returnable) for Amazon Prime members, it really varies from brand to brand or product to product.

If it’s flexibility and style you’re looking for out of your furniture, I highly recommend Burrow. It’s not your typical furniture retailer; Burrow focuses on affordable, convenient, and modern pieces, all of which feature a unique modular design. As a result, every one of the company’s sofas, bed frames, and other pieces is designed to shrink or expand, so your investment pieces will grow and change as your life changes over the years ahead.

We’ve tested multiple couches from Burrow here at The Spruce, including the Range 3-Piece Open Sectional (one of our favorite modular sofas) and the Block Nomad Sofa (which is our absolute favorite couch!) In our testing, we’ve discovered that Burrow’s furniture is incredibly well-made, customizable thanks to the modular designs, and comfortable for sitting, lounging, or sleeping. Plus, we’ve loved the durability of the different upholstery fabrics and how they handle wear over years of use.

All of Burrow’s furniture is designed with nods to American mid-century modern and contemporary Scandinavian styles. Clean lines and sleek pieces populate the selection, but there’s still plenty of variety to choose from (whether that’s in colorful upholstery options or different materials.) If you’re looking for another style, like farmhouse or industrial, the pieces here may not suit your taste.

Our only complaint about Burrow? We wish there were even more pieces to choose from, with a bit more variety in style.

West Elm, a sister brand to Pottery Barn (another of my favorites that’s on this list), is a furniture retailer that’s known for its high-quality modern and mid-century modern pieces. It’s one of my favorite places to head for large items like bed frames, couches, and dining tables and chairs. However, you’ll also find smaller furniture and accent pieces like shelves, ottomans, and even floor pillows here—and it’s all wonderfully stylish.

One of the details that sets West Elm apart from other places to buy furniture is its dedication to crafting furniture with premium materials. While the prices of its products are typically a bit lower than Pottery Barn or competitors like Crate & Barrel, West Elm still uses premium materials. In fact, more than half of the retailer’s products support at least one sustainability initiative. The product selection also includes a mix of artisan-made pieces.

Plus, I’m a big fan of the customization options offered by West Elm. It’s easy to find exactly what you’re searching for, whether it’s a high-end dresser or a custom-upholstered sofa or chair. The in-house design service is especially helpful if you aren’t sure where to start, or you need help finding or creating exactly what you have in mind; I’ve used it myself, and the advice is fantastic if you’re trying to find your style.

Just note, however, that West Elm’s delivery timeframes for large furniture can be quite long. It can take more than a month to receive your items, and if you’re opting for a customized piece, it can take even longer.

There’s really nowhere better to find simple, straightforward, and budget-friendly furniture than IKEA. Beloved by college students, first-time renters, families with young kids, and even longtime homeowners, IKEA offers a selection of pieces big and small at a fraction of the price point of other retailers.

I’ve long been a fan of IKEA’s furniture, from my very first college-era couch to its smart storage pieces—I currently have multiple sets of the Trofast Storage System in my son’s room and living room, and I’ve owned Billy Bookcases for over 15 years. And I love how innovative its ready-to-assemble furniture is, often solving small-space issues or offering ample storage.

While IKEA furniture tends to stick to a clean and simple Scandinavian design aesthetic, you do have options. Many pieces come in two or three color choices, and you can often choose between materials like solid pine, MDF, or more decorative alternatives like wicker. More premium materials do tend to cost more, but we’re talking $50 to $100 more, not hundreds.

The only downside? IKEA is easier to shop in person than online, as shipping pieces to your home can come with delivery fees and that notorious IKEA assembly process. However, if you live near one of its brick-and-mortar stores, you can easily shop online and pick up your furniture in person.

With a focus on modern furniture that’s built for the long haul, I’m a big fan of Crate & Barrel. Here, contemporary and classic designs are most common, though you’ll also find coastal and mid-century modern pieces within its sizable inventory. The Infiniti Swivel Chair is used daily in my bedroom, and the eye-catching rattan and wood Canyon Dresser and Canyon 4-Shelf Bookcase have held up to daily use (and sticky fingers) from my toddler for two years now.

We’ve also tested multiple Crate & Barrel sofas here at The Spruce, and we particularly love the retailer’s sectionals. The Lounge Sofa, which can be designed to suit your specific space and needs thanks to its customizable nature, and we love the many different configurations, sizes, and upholstery options. During testing, we also found it supremely comfortable and nicely durable, even in homes with pets.

If you’re looking for lasting furniture, I’ve found Crate & Barrel’s pieces are built for the long haul—and the demands of daily life. The furniture is made with consistently high-quality craftsmanship, and the pieces use materials like solid, kiln-dried hardwood or engineered wood. Plus, there’s a wealth of performance fabrics available on upholstered items.

With such a wide catalog of items large and small, Crate & Barrel can be a one-stop shop for virtually all of your home needs, whether stocking up on kitchen essentials or decorating your bedroom. Just note that shipping costs can vary based on the size of your order, so you’ll want to pay attention to any added fees before checking out.

Not into style trends or changing your furniture up as tastes change over the years? That’s one of the reasons I love shopping at Room & Board, one of my favorite places to buy high-quality furniture. All of Room & Board’s pieces are staples that are designed to be “trend-proof” and outlive seasonal trend cycles. Online and in-store, you can find options for every room in your home, including upholstered bed frames, customizable sectionals, and patio furniture.

I particularly like that Room & Board offers complimentary design services, which pairs you with a design expert—either virtually or in-person—for decor inspiration and help with furniture selection, floor planning, and more. I’ve found it’s especially helpful if you’re starting from scratch in a new place, or you need large furniture that’ll do double duty as a style statement and a durable, comfy place to rest or relax.

I also like that returns are free, and Room & Board offers free leather and fabric swatches to help make your shopping decisions easier.

Many of Room & Board's offerings are on the pricier side, but if high-quality craftsmanship is a priority for you, then I’d argue it's well worth the splurge. Just note that if you're looking for styles other than modern, your options will be limited.

If you’re shopping for modern furniture, Apt2B is one of the best places to buy furniture. This retailer focuses on options that are built to last, so you can rest easy knowing this furniture doesn’t just look good; it's durable. Best of all, many pieces are made in the USA, making it an excellent place to buy American-made furniture.

I love that Apt2B allows you to customize upholstery and color options using the site’s online shopping tool. While this is pretty common across all of the retailers on this list, the customization here goes a bit further for some items, like sofas or sectionals.  You can customize not only the appearance, but also the width and seat depth for semi-custom furniture that fits your space.

Custom sofas take just 2-3 weeks to make—a welcome departure from lengthier wait times at some other retailers on our list, like West Elm. And if you’re buying pieces that Apt2B has in stock, you won’t need to wait weeks at all for shipping and delivery.

Keep in mind, though, that you can only shop Apt2B online. You won't be able to try anything out in person before buying. However, if you're dissatisfied with your purchase for any reason, I’m happy to note the retailer does offer a generous 100-day return window (the longest of all the retailers on this list!)

What to Look for When Buying Furniture

An Extensive Selection That Suits Every Style

While it might be tempting to shop at furniture retailers that offer complete sets or bundles so you can decorate an entire room in one go, I recommend insteading shopping at a variety of different stores—and at stores with an array of different furniture styles.

A bigger product selection (and plenty of variety) is always better. "It can cost $20,000 to $30,000 to furnish an entire home with matching sets. So, depending on your budget, you're probably going to be buying furniture room by room," says John Maxim, a real estate investor and master house flipper.

When you choose a furniture retailer with a wide selection, you have the flexibility to customize each room and each piece to your liking. You don't have to stick with a dedicated set that matches couches and chairs or bed frames and dressers; as Maxim suggests, "Mixing and matching can be fun; you don't always have to copy looks right out of the catalog."

Plus, while it might be tempting to go with all modern or classic furniture, you never know how your tastes might change. Maybe you’d like a couch with clean lines, but you’re interested in more mid-century leaning accent chairs or a more coastal-inspired coffee table. Stores with broad selections allow you to try out different combinations.

A Variety of Price Points

Price obviously matters when you’re shopping for furniture. No matter your budget, furniture is always an investment. But in my experience, it’s very common for shoppers to splurge on items that’ll be used the most, like couches, and spend less on accents like console tables or bookshelves.

So, don’t assume that you have to shop at high-priced furniture retailers to find the best items. You can mix and match, opting for a customized (and expensive) couch from Pottery Barn or Crate & Barrel, then add in some budget-friendly end tables from IKEA or Wayfair.

If you’re able to find a retailer that covers many different price points, with budget-priced pieces and higher-priced investment pieces, you’ll find it easier to shop at one place. After all, mixing high and low is always in style, budget or not!

Reasonable Return Policies and Flexible Trial Periods

If your furniture doesn’t quite fit your home or your needs, returning it can be incredibly tricky. That’s why the best places to buy furniture are those that offer reasonable return policies—and it’s even better if they offer a trial period.

Trial periods allow shoppers to try out couches, bed frames, bookshelves, or other pieces of furniture with no risk. If it’s not a fit, the furniture can be sent back at no cost. However, while trial periods are common for items like mattresses, they aren’t often offered for furniture. If you’re able to take advantage of one, it’s an extra layer of peace of mind.

Trial period or not, I highly recommend that you get an upfront understanding of the retailer's return policies before committing to a purchase. How long is the return window? Will you have to cover the shipping costs? Return policies can vary widely, so you'll want to read the fine print before adding any furniture to your cart (especially if you're shopping online without seeing products in person.) On average, though, you can expect a 30-day return window at most retailers.

Be extra sure to examine the item upon arrival to make sure there's no damage. "If there's a tear or missing piece when the furniture arrives, take pictures and address it right away," says Maxim. Often, if you wait more than a few weeks, it will be too late.

Return Timeframe Refund Policy
Article 30 days $49 return shipping fee within 30 days; fee varies if returned outside of 30-day window
Pottery Barn 30 days (most items) 100% refund, minus any delivery fees
Wayfair 30 days All returns are free
Amazon Varies by retailer Most returns are free (may vary by retailer)
Burrow 30 days Return fees are charged (up to 20% of the item’s price)
West Elm 30 days (most items) Shipping and processing fees may apply
IKEA 180 days All returns are free
Crate & Barrel 30 days 100% refund, minus any shipping fees
Room & Board Not listed All returns are free
Apt2B 100 days 15% restocking fee, plus any return shipping fees

Simple, Straightforward Delivery

Shipping varies depending on the retailer and time of year, but it's important to factor in when you're making a purchase—especially if that purchase is time-sensitive. "If you buy something that's in stock and on the floor, expect it within the week," says Maxim. But many times that's not the case, especially due to ongoing supply chain issues.

It's also important to note how your furniture will be shipped and delivered. If the pieces you're purchasing will require assembly, shipping timeframes are often shorter and speedier. For example, items that can be flat-packed and sent via delivery couriers like UPS and FedEx will often arrive within days or weeks.

However, if your furniture is being assembled before it arrives and requires special delivery, it may take longer to both ship and reach your front door.

Additionally, don't overlook the timeframe for custom furniture. Opting for custom upholstery or an entirely custom-built piece can extend the shipping time, taking anywhere from six to eight weeks or months to ship out for home delivery.

When is the Best Time to Buy Furniture?

Furniture prices vary pretty widely—you’ll find smaller pieces like accent chairs or nightstands priced as low as $100 (or less, depending on where you shop), while larger items like sofas and bed frames are usually $500 or more. But if you’re looking for a deal, there are typically two times per year that all types of furniture see discounts: early December and late June.

According to Maxim, you’ll find the cheapest furniture if you shop after a big sale. That’s when suppliers want to eliminate surplus inventory. More specifically, he says to look "one week after Black Friday and Father's Day sales."

One More Thing

While the retailers on this list offer wonderfully varied selections and furniture across a wide range of styles, they don't offer more unique pieces. So, if you're searching for something more eclectic, customized, or one-of-a-kind, you'll want to skip big box retailers in favor of local stores, ateliers, or regional chains.

Don't rule out antique stores, either. If you're interested in curating your home furniture and don't mind taking time to search for the perfect pieces, visiting local antique stores (and even thrift stores) will allow you to find an even broader selection of styles across different decades.
