We Tested Push Brooms, and These Are Our Top 4 to Upgrade Your Cleaning Routine

Out of 21 models, these were the clear winners

The KeFanta Outdoor Heavy-Duty Push Broom sweeps dirt outside

The Spruce

You may sweep daily around your kitchen with a regular broom, but the exteriors around your home are just as important. Whether you are cleaning your deck, driveway, or garage, a push broom comes in handy when cleaning up dirt, dust, and debris.

To find the best ones, we put 21 brooms to the test, and we discovered four that were top-rated push brooms in The Lab.

We evaluated each model based on the durability of bristles, handle design, adjustability, and overall performance—and all four of our push brooms blew us away.

Our Top Picks

Best for Most Homes and Tasks

Our favorite overall push broom is the KeFanta Push Broom, because it excelled in our lab at picking up the most debris compared to others we tested after sweeping up sawdust, leaves, and sand.

While we liked its simple design, what made this broom stand apart was its sturdy bristles and the added foam wrap around the handle. We loved this handle for applying comfortable pressure and for its leverage during heavy-duty cleaning jobs.

We also found that this push broom performed best on sand and leaves, but we also think it could work great for moving light snow in the winter and debris in garages and basements year-round.

Just note this push broom is one of the heaviest on our list (at 4 pounds), but the benefits of the added foam more than makes up for it. Additionally, there's a hanging hole on the handle so you can easily store this broom in a utility closet, on a wall hook, or in your garage.

Best for Tidying Up Your Garage

To clean your garage year-round, we recommend the Quickie Bulldozer Multi-Surface Push Broom. It has a sturdy metal handle and the ability to sweep large debris, such as leaves, due to its varied bristle sizes.

We discovered that the broom head is slightly wider compared to other options—which isn't optimal for most conventional dustpans—but we think this could be a big bonus when sweeping up large surface areas in your garage.

While it slipped a few times during testing, there was never as much as a scratch on it, highlighting its durability. We also noted that the resin block that holds the broom head is weather-resistant, so you don’t have to worry about it cracking, warping, or rotting.

At 2.4 pounds, this broom is almost half the weight of our best overall push broom and only about 1 pound more than our favorite lightweight pick below.

Best Lightweight (Less Than Two Pounds!)

While push brooms are typically larger and heavier than traditional brooms, the Swopt 18-inch Premium Multi-Surface Push Broom weighs less than two pounds despite its large size. This push broom is one of the lightest on our list, which made it easy to navigate and use in our lab.

The comfort grip on the handle is a nice touch, and best of all, the detachable broom head and handle can be swapped with different broom heads and handles to fit your specific needs.

For example, you can purchase wet-mopping heads and scrub brushes separately, which can come in handy if you’re working with soap and stains, and even indoor surfaces made of tile or laminate.

It’s important to note that this push broom left behind some dust and sand in our testing, and a couple of leaves got stuck in the bristles. We looked past this because of the convenient features and comfortable, lightweight design that will make your cleaning tasks a total breeze.

Best Flexible and Adjustable

If you’re looking for a push broom whose handle can be adjusted for your height or specific cleaning tasks, we suggest the Yocada Push Broom Brush.

In our testing, we found that it performed well with various types of debris. It has flexible bristles, which allowed for larger debris, like leaves, to flow freely and avoid getting stuck. Plus, it was easy to remove the handle’s components and adjust its height.

Because of its bright yellow color, the broom head will easily show dirt over time, especially if you don’t clean it regularly. It’s also too wide to use with most dustpans if you’re picking up the debris by yourself, but we think it can work with someone’s help or with a wider, heavier dustpan.

The middle component of the handle has a very comfortable grip pad, and we’ve seen this pick go on sale for less than $30. We think it's a great value, though, with or without the discount.

Final Verdict

Based on our rigorous testing, we found that our most favorite push broom is the KeFanta Push Broom. It has a comfortable handle and a simple design effective at picking up debris. If you’re looking for something suitable specifically for a garage, we suggest the Quickie Bulldozer Multi-Surface Push Broom, which is weather-resistant, so you don’t have to worry about it cracking, warping, or rotting.

How We Tested the Push Brooms

The Spruce

We tested 21 products during our brooms test in The Lab, four of which were push brooms from top brands like Yocada, Swopt, and Quickie. To make sure we thoroughly tested these tools, we created a mixture of sawdust, leaves, and sand, and purposefully spread the mixture onto our lab floor before getting to work.

Overall, we found that push brooms are great for outdoor, garage, and workshop use, and aren't exactly easy to use with a dustpan. We think they can also be a good solution for moving snow, cleaning up a driveway, and picking up leaves. To test our brooms, we examined three main areas:

  • Durability: We rated the durability of each push broom based on how sturdy it felt as we swept, and how well the bristles performed. If they frayed or bent while we tested, we made note of it.
  • Performance: After spreading our mixture on the floor and cleaning it up the best that we could, we determined how much of the debris each broom moved in just one push. We also noted if any debris was stuck in the bristles and had to be cleaned off by hand.
  • Design: Last, we evaluated the design of each push broom by considering extra features, such as foam grip pads on the handle or adjustable handles and broom heads that made the broom comfortable to use.

What to Consider When Buying a Push Broom

Test the Broom's Durability

Although most push brooms are meant for outdoor use, they are made with more durable and weather-resistant materials. Even lightweight options, like the SWOPT 18-inch Premium Multi-Surface Push Broom are durable, sturdy, and reliable.

"Trusting that you can use your broom without worrying about the material cracking or falling apart can make a huge difference in how you approach sweeping," advises Ken Doty, cleaning expert and chief information officer at The Maids.

Evaluate the Handle's Features

While the bristles are important, we also think that a padded or comfortable handle can make larger cleaning jobs less strenuous. A good push broom handle should be comfortable and durable. But if you prefer versatility when it comes to your broom's handle, think about an adjustable pick, such as the Yocada Push Broom Brush

Research the Sweeping Width

We know that a conventional broom can be used to sweep a garage, driveway, or workshop, but we found that you can save lots of time and effort using a push broom instead. That's because push brooms have wider heads, and the bigger the broom head, the better it is for cleaning a larger space.

Consider the Broom's Versatility

Although a push broom may not be as versatile as a cordless stick vacuum or a steam mop (both of which we've also tested), there are still things to look for in a push broom to make sure it’s versatile enough for your space. For example, the ability to clean effectively on multiple surfaces with a variety of messes is one key indicator.

During our testing, we discovered that some push brooms have extra features, such as different heads or a squeegee tool to make them useful for cleaning jobs that deal with stains, water, or soap. We love the Quickie 24-Inch Knockdown 2-in-1 Multi-Surface Push Broom, for example. Our pick for most homes, the KeFanta Push Broom, is versatile in our book, because it's effective when picking up all different sizes of debris, including bundles of leaves and dust.
