Efficient heat retention that really works

A solar pool cover can help increase the temperature of your pool, reduce evaporation, and keep debris from ending up in the water. The best solar pool covers are easy to install and remove, provide a strong insulating effect, and last several seasons. Jimmie Meece, Brand President of America’s Swimming Pool Company, recommends UV-stabilized polyethylene for good heat transfer while minimizing the impact of UV rays on chlorine levels.

Focusing on polyethylene models, we researched solar pool covers for effectiveness, thickness, durability, ease of use, and other factors. We then selected several top contenders to test in our own pools around the country, examining each for how well they retain heat, whether they prevent evaporation, how durable they feel, and other criteria.

Our testing found that the best solar pool covers retain heat well, but the increase in temperature depends on sun exposure, ambient temperature, and other factors. Some people will see an increase of up to 10 degrees Fahrenheit, but Meece tells us that, depending on the pool size, “it’s likely a solar cover will only heat the top 6 inches of water and will not raise the water temperature of your entire pool.”

In addition to traditional solar blankets, we also like solar discs (easy to install and remove) for smaller above-ground pools and liquid solar covers as a short-term solution that doesn’t require as much effort to apply.

What We Like
  • Kept the water warm

  • Lightweight and easy to use

  • Easy to customize shape

What We Don't Like
  • Packaging issues

  • No warranty information

We recommend the SunHeater Pool Solar Blanket as the best solar pool cover because it performed exceptionally well in our tests, effectively maintaining the water's temperature on chilly days. It effectively captured solar energy to keep the pool warm through six months of testing, like a DIY pool heater, according to an accurate pool thermometer we used to monitor the pool before and after installing this cover.

We installed the cover on our pool in southern California in early spring and were impressed with its ability to maintain the water temperature at a very comfortable 71 to 73 degrees even on chillier days. On one day, when the outdoor temperature was in the low 50s, we measured the pool water at 71 degrees, so this cover definitely allowed us to use our pools on days we wouldn't have otherwise.

When the summer heat arrived, we found ourselves using the cover less often. It actually made the water too warm if we left it on during hot, sunny days, so we only used it to keep debris out at night and on cloudier days during the hotter part of the year. The cover also helped prevent evaporation since we didn’t have to add any water to the pool when we otherwise would have.

Our only problem with this cover was some packaging issues since the way it was rolled up in the package prevented us from unrolling it bubble-side down, as the instructions said. We ended up having to unroll it with the bubble side up and then carefully (with two sets of hands) flip it over when placing it on the surface of the pool.

After initially having trouble installing the cover, we didn’t have any trouble removing, folding, unfolding, or reinstalling it. We had previously used a Blue Wave NS530 on the same pool, and we found this one to be much easier to handle and much lighter while providing the exact same warming effect. The Blue Wave is thicker than this one (14 vs. 12 mil), but this cover worked just as well despite being thinner.

In addition to being easy to handle and keeping our pool comfortably warm, we also like how customizable this pool cover is. We have a rectangular pool that didn’t require any customization, but you can easily cut this cover to fit if none of the available sizes are quite right or if you have a kidney, oval, or custom-shaped pool.

What We Like
  • Easy setup for two people

  • Reduced water evaporation

  • Noticeable temperature difference

  • High quality construction

What We Don't Like
  • Limited instructions

Heavy-duty pool covers are good for cooler climates because they help retain more heat and withstand the elements better. This cover from BigXwell is our favorite heavy-duty solar pool cover because it features solid construction and a substantial 16 mil thickness, and despite its extra bulk, it’s still easy for two people to deploy.

Prior to installing this cover on our pool, we used a floating thermometer to check the water temperature. We then checked again after six hours of having the solar pool cover on, and found that the water temperature had risen two degrees despite already being quite warm.

We didn’t experience any chilly weather while testing, but we were quite satisfied with how well the cover retained heat, blocked debris, and prevented evaporation. We had used another similar cover on the pool in the past, and this one felt much more durable and strong. The ultimate test of durability will require further testing, but this pool cover feels like it will hold up quite well.

We used this pool cover without a reel, and we didn’t have any trouble installing or removing it with two people working together. However, if you want to handle it with just one person, we recommend using it with a reel because it is quite heavy and bulky (especially the larger sizes). Using a reel would also solve our only real complaint about this cover, which is that it’s so bulky when folded up for storage.

Another minor issue is that while this cover comes with clips to connect it to a reel, it doesn’t include any instructions for attaching them. That won’t be an issue if your reel comes with its own clips and instructions, but you may need to do some experimentation if you already have a reel and need to figure out how to use the included clips.

Type: Solar blanket | Size: 12, 18 feet (round), 12 x 24, 12 x 32, 16 x 24, 16 x 32, 18 x 36, 20 x 40 feet (rectangle) | Shape: Round, Rectangle | Thickness: 16 mil | Material: Polyethylene | Weight: 11.13 - 67.9 pounds | Warranty: Not provided

How do you maintain a solar pool cover?

To ensure the durability of your pool cover, only place it on the pool when the chlorine level is below 2.5 ppm and the pH level is above 7.2. High chlorine levels, acidic pH levels, and low calcium levels can wear down a solar pool cover and make it crispy. Remove the cover before treating your pool with chemicals, and use a reel to store it properly during off-seasons.

What We Like
  • Aluminized cover to increase heat transfer

  • Effectively kept debris out

  • Easy to set up and cut to fit

What We Don't Like
  • Setup is difficult without a roller

Exposure to UV rays can negatively impact your pool’s water chemistry, reducing chlorine levels. If you don’t want to compensate by adding more chemicals, look for a dark-colored solar pool cover that will block UV rays from the water below. If that’s your priority, we recommend the Premium Plus Solar Blanket from In the Swim.

We installed this pool cover on our 24-foot above-ground pool in New Jersey and were pleased with the easy setup. Two people were needed to drag it over the pool, but one person was able to remove it to open the pool without any trouble. The cover would have been easier to install and remove with a roller, but we were able to use it throughout the summer without one.

When we first placed this cover over our pool, we measured a water temperature of 70 degrees that increased to 74 degrees after just a few hours. That allowed us to use the pool on cooler days when we wouldn't have otherwise, and also let us keep the pool open well past the date we would normally close it for the winter..

We were impressed with how thick this cover is, at 12-mil (about as thick as poster board). It's an aluminized cover, which means it's manufactured with an aluminum alloy that gives it a reflective quality. That's what allows to to minimize UV exposure while maximizing solar energy transfer (trapping heat from sunlight) to the water below. According to the manufacturer, you can expect up to a 15-degree rise in water temperature, which is similar to our best heavy-duty pick.

This pool cover is available in 12 different sizes to accommodate various pool sizes and shapes. If you don't find the exact size you need, it's easy to trim it to the right size. If you’re unhappy with your pool cover, it’s covered with a 7-year warranty (the longest on our list).

Type: Solar blanket | Size: 16 x 32 feet, 4 x 8 feet, 12 x 24 feet, 14 x 28 feet, 15 x 30 feet, 16 x 24 feet | Shape: Rectangle | Thickness: 12 mil | Material: Polyethylene | Weight: Not listed | Warranty: 7 years

What We Like
  • Easy to set up and remove

  • Effectively warms the pool

  • Keeps debris out

What We Don't Like
  • Puckers if too large

If you have a round pool, we recommend using a round Clear-Tek Micro-Bubble Solar Cover from Doheny’s. This is one of the easiest covers we tested, and we were thrilled to find that we could install and remove it with just one person. After just a few hours, we noticed an increase in water temperature, and it also helped keep debris out of our pool.

We had some initial trouble installing this cover because of the way we tried putting it on (we had to lift the whole thing up and over the pool filter). After that proved difficult, we started from the other side, and it was easy for just one person to pull up and over.

Most solar blankets (including this one) are designed to be cut to fit, but it’s easier if you start with the right shape. This one is available in a variety of sizes from 12 to 33 feet to fit most round pools (with oval options available as well).

Our pool fell into an in-between space, so the cover we tested was a little big. That resulted in the cover puckering up, but we actually liked it better that way since it was very effective at keeping debris out of the pool, keeping heat in, and preventing water from evaporating. We got a lot of rain during testing, so it’s hard to judge the impact it had on evaporation, but we think it should be effective because it completely covered our pool.

Type: Solar blanket | Size: 12 feet, 15 feet, 18 feet, 21 feet, 24 feet, 28 feet, 30 feet, 33 feet | Shape: Round | Thickness: 8 mil | Material: Polyethylene | Weight: 15 pounds | Warranty: 3 years

What We Like
  • Saves the effort of removing and replacing a physical cover

  • Formula is pH neutral

  • Application only required once per week

What We Don't Like
  • No physical barrier for UV rays or debris

  • Needs to be added to pool skimmer for best results

We haven't had the opportunity to test this one yet, but we think it’s a great option if you lack the time or ability to regularly remove and replace physical pool cover. It works especially well in dry climates where evaporation is a big problem since it creates a liquid "cover" that helps reduce pool water evaporation by 85 percent (only 5 percent less than our best overall) and heat loss by 70 percent, according to the manufacturer.

The most significant advantage of using this liquid solar pool cover is that it saves you the time and hassle associated with removing and replacing bulky physical pool covers. However, it is worth keeping in mind that this solution will not protect your pool from UV rays or debris that may blow into the pool. Therefore, you will need a pool cleaner to keep your water free of leaves and twigs.

The Coverfree Liquid Solar Blanket comes in a 32-ounce bottle. To use it effectively, you will need four ounces of the solution for every 20,000 gallons of pool water. For best results, Natural Chemistry recommends using it weekly by adding it to the skimmer while your pool pump is running.

Type: Liquid | Amount: 32 ounces | Dosage: 4 ounces per 20,000 gallons (667 square feet) of pool water per week

Final Verdict

Our top recommendation for a solar pool cover is the SunHeater Pool Solar Blanket. It has a 12-mil thickness, which keeps it light and maneuverable. The blue tint of the polyethylene material means it's effective at retaining heat while blocking a measure of UV rays, which negatively impact pool chemistry. But if you want to skip the hassle of regularly covering and uncovering your pool, pick Natural Chemistry COVERfree Liquid Solar Blanket. Add the liquid formula to your pool skimmer, and it will increase the surface tension of the water, which reduces evaporation and heat loss.

Other Options We Tested

Solar Sun Rings: These solar pool covers are inflatable discs that float on the surface of your pool, making them easy for one person to put in and take out. However, we encountered some issues during testing that prevented us from fully recommending this product. Our most important recommendation is to have a pump on hand for inflating these rings because doing it manually takes a long time (over six minutes) and is really tiring.

It was also challenging to get each section inflated correctly, which required much trial and error. We also wish they were available to buy as just a single ring because three rings didn't provide enough coverage for our pool, and six would have been too much. They work really well, though, and we noticed a significant increase in water temperature even without full coverage.

How We Tested the Solar Pool Covers

We selected a variety of solar pool covers based on their specifications, type, and design to test in our pools around the country. We evaluated each pool cover for ease of setup and use, effectiveness, and overall value.

  • Setup: We started our evaluation of each solar pool cover by unboxing, checking the instructions (if any) and then timing the initial installation time. During this process we noted any difficulties we encountered, any issues with the instructions, and how well the cover fit our pool.
  • Ease of use: To judge ease of use, we started by timing how long it took to remove the cover and prepare the pool for use. During this process, we noted any difficulties we encountered, how well we were able to roll or fold the cover, and whether or not we could easily reinstall it. We also noted any issues with maintaining the cover.
  • Effectiveness: To measure each cover's effectiveness, we recorded the ambient temperature, the water's starting temperature, and the temperature six hours after installing the cover. We also noted whether the water felt warmer, whether we noticed any difference in evaporation, and whether we saved any money on water or chemicals during the testing period.
  • Value: We looked at the price of each solar pool cover and weighed that against the effectiveness and ease of use of the cover, along with comparing the price to other similar covers to determine if the cover was a good value or not.

What to Look for in a Solar Pool Cover

Pool Size

When shopping for a solar pool cover, make sure you have accurate dimensions for your pool available. “You should measure the longest and widest points of your pool to ensure that the solar pool cover completely covers your pool area,” says Meece, adding, “If the cover does not completely enclose the water surface, heat will escape.”

You’ll most often find solar pool covers in round, rectangular, oval, and square shapes. Order one that most closely matches your pool’s dimensions, but don’t pick one that is too small to cover the pool's surface.

If you can’t find a pool cover that matches your pool's dimensions, always size up and select a cover designed to be trimmed. One of the reasons we love the SunHeater Pool Solar Blanket (our best overall recommendation) is that it's easy to trim to size or even to match irregularly shaped pools.

Do solar covers increase algae?

A solar pool cover can create favorable conditions for algae growth. “Since solar pool covers keep your pool warm and prevent evaporation, algae may grow more quickly than normal,” says Meece. “Staying on top of maintenance needs, including regularly removing organic matter and keeping your pool chemicals balanced, will combat this.”

While you can cut most solar blankets to size, leaving some to drape over the edge can help keep out debris.

Color and Air Bubbles

Solar pool covers are typically clear, light blue, silver, dark blue, or black. Color isn’t an aesthetic choice; instead, it determines how effective the cover is at transferring heat and blocking UV rays. In terms of heat transfer, Meece says that “clear solar pool covers are the most effective.”

He points out that the clear material allows the sun’s rays to easily penetrate the water underneath the cover, but there’s a drawback. “They do not block UV rays that can break down your chlorine.” As a result, you may need to add chemicals to your pool water more frequently. Even still, it’s a great option for transferring heat to your pool and a key reason why the In the Swim Premium Plus Solar Blanket is our pick for the best UV-resistant solar pool cover.

Air bubbles give solar pool covers their distinct bubble wrap-like texture. These are frequently found on solar pool blankets. The “purpose of air bubbles is to trap heat while simultaneously insulating the heat at night when the sun goes down,” says Meece.

Thickness

The thickness of a solar pool cover impacts how well it retains heat and prevents evaporation, with thicker covers typically performing better in both of those areas. Thicker covers are also more durable than thinner ones, less prone to tearing, and more likely to last through multiple seasons. Solar pool cover thickness is measured in mils (one mill is equal to one thousandth of an inch) and ranges between 8 and 16 mils.

  • 8 mils: These pool covers are very thin (thinner than a standard credit card), so they’re lightweight and easy to handle. They’re best for mild climates because they don’t provide the same heat retention as thicker covers, but they’re also quite lightweight and easy to handle. Our best round pick is an 8 mil cover, so it's very light and easy to handle.
  • 12-14 mils: Pool covers in this range provide good heat retention while not being too difficult to handle. Our overall best recommendation is 12 mils thick, and we found it easy to handle with two sets of hands.
  • 16 mils: This is the thickest type of solar pool cover, so it’s good for cooler climates and tends to be the most durable. Our best heavy-duty pick is 16 mils thick. While we recommend using it with a reel, we were able to install and remove it by hand with two people despite its substantial weight and bulk.

Material

Although the materials of solar pool covers vary, all options are non-permeable and designed to trap heat and minimize evaporation. Some of the most common materials are vinyl, polyethylene, and polypropylene.

  • Vinyl solar pool covers are among the most durable types. The thicker material is more rigid, “making them easy for pool owners to remove without tearing,” according to Meece.
  • Polyethylene solar pool covers, like our best overall, are “lightweight and flexible and effective at transferring heat,” says Meece. However, despite these benefits, they are less durable and may require more frequent replacement than vinyl solar pool covers.
  • Polypropylene solar pool covers are another option for transferring and retaining heat. Meece says that these covers are very effective, but the downside is that they can be difficult to maneuver due to their thickness. We did not feature a polypropylene solar pool cover on our list due to its complexity.

Inflatable solar rings or discs are easy to install and remove, but inflating them takes some time.
