The 8 Best Laundry Baskets The Spruce Has Tested

Laundry day is about to level up

Owning a quality laundry basket can turn the once-tedious chore of doing laundry into a smooth, therapeutic task. It’s an essential laundry room item that everyone needs, but often becomes a last-minute purchase when shopping for a new space.

Still, we think a reliable basket should be large enough to store several loads and durable enough to get your clothes from one room to another.

We tested 30 laundry baskets during our regular laundry routine to help you find the best ones for your space and lifestyle, assessing how easy and comfortable each basket was to carry, design style and size, durability, and overall value. These picks will have you actually excited to wash your next load!

What We Like
  • Collapsible design makes for easy storing

  • Third handle and curved side for carrying on hip

  • Comes in a set of two in multiple colors

What We Don't Like
  • Only available in a color-blocked design

This Sammart Collapsible Laundry Basket is durable, easy to clean, and spacious enough for any large load. Coming in a set of two, these plastic laundry baskets are designed with a third handle and curved sides, which we found to be an extremely useful feature, especially for those who tend to carry their basket on their hip.

When storing them away, you can press the basket’s sides down until they are completely flat and collapsed. So, if you’re tight on closet space or don’t want your plastic bins in the open, you can easily stash them in your laundry closet or shelving.

While plastic may not be the most aesthetically pleasing material, it's extremely durable and easy to clean. There's no need to worry about scrubbing laundry detergent spills when you can wipe. We love that the baskets come in 15 color options, but its color-blocked design style may not be everyone’s cup of tea.

Overall, we love how functional this two-piece basket set is. Its curved construction and extra third handle make it comfortable to hold and carry from room to room, and its plastic material will give you decades of use.

Dimensions: 17.9 x 22.8 x 10.5 inches | Capacity: 41 liters | Material: Plastic | Weight: 5.54 pounds | Color: Black, bright blue, gray, pink, red, white, bright green, light purple, sky blue | Handles: 3

What We Like
  • Includes two baskets

  • Constructed with a waterproof fabric

  • Long handles make it easy to carry

What We Don't Like
  • Only available in one colorway

Whether you have a large household with too many clothes or tend to fall behind in folding your clean laundry, two baskets may solve all of your laundry problems. HomeHacks gives you two large-sized baskets for $20, $11 cheaper than the median price.

This value set easily fits two loads in each basket. Our favorite feature is its two long handles, which make carrying the basket up a flight of stairs a breeze. We tend to drag the basket by the handles when we’re dealing with a heavy load.

Don’t worry—these baskets are super durable. We’ve had plenty of heavy loads with damp towels. Plus, they’re made from a waterproof fabric, so you don’t have to worry about mildew.

While we like the design, and it's pretty stylish enough to be left in the open, we do wish there was more than one colorway. But at a valuable price of $20 for two laundry baskets, we won't complain.

Dimensions: 24.4 x 15.7 x 11.8 inches | Capacity: 75 liters | Material: Polyester | Weight: 1.5 pounds | Color: Gradient gray | Handles: Two

How many laundry baskets do I need?

Having at least two laundry baskets allows you to sort and fold your load without overflow. The number of baskets needed also depends on the amount of clothes you have and whether you're doing laundry for one person or a family of five.

What We Like
  • Great for oversized laundry loads

  • Well-ventilated design

  • Four handles

What We Don't Like
  • Only available in white

  • May be too large for tight spaces

Plastic laundry baskets are long-lasting, and their smooth surfaces are easy to clean and great for delicate textiles because they won’t snag. Nearly checking off all our boxes across the board, the Home Logic Laundry Basket is our highest-rated plastic option.

This basket features four built-in handles (which is rare) and has a more vertical yet wide silhouette, which is great for larger loads. But its large size may not be ideal for small, tight spaces. And while it is easy to carry, we wouldn’t consider it lightweight. It has some heft and sturdiness to it, which we love. You can carry your load without the fear of it breaking.

We also love the ventilation that most plastic laundry baskets bring. Because of the basket’s hole construction on all four sides, even if your textiles come out slightly damp, you can still sort and fully dry your load without worrying about mildew forming.

If you’re looking for a simple yet durable basket to carry your large load, we think the Home Logic Laundry Basket is an ideal pick.

Dimensions: 21.65 x 16.96 x 18.86 inches | Capacity: 70.5 liters | Material: Plastic | Weight: 3.03 pounds | Color: White | Handles: 4

What We Like
  • Comfortable and easy to carry with large loads

  • Collapses for easy storage

  • Great for small spaces and college dorms

  • Lots of color options

What We Don't Like
  • Not the quickest to clean

  • Fabric material isn’t ideal for damp clothing

The CleverMade Collapsible Laundry Basket is perfect for small closets and laundry rooms tight on space. It’s collapsible and flattens down to where you can slide it on the side of your washer machine or on your shelf. We even think it’ll make the perfect laundry hamper for a college dorm.

This basket can be used for more than just laundry, and because it comes in a pack of two, you can use one for clean laundry and the other for dirty clothes (we think it can even double as a car trunk organizer.)

However, when filling it up, we recommend sticking to fully dried textiles only. We found that its fabric material isn’t ideal for damp clothing. For wet, air-dried garments, consider a plastic basket that offers great ventilation, like our best overall pick, or invest in a clothes drying rack instead.

We love that you’re able to have the classic, rectangular laundry basket shape, but in a soft fabric material. You can leave it out as a hamper or break it down and stash it away. The CleverMade Laundry Basket gives you the best of both worlds.

Dimensions: 23 x 15 x 13.25 inches | Capacity: 64 liters | Material: ‎Polyester, alloy steel, linen | Weight: 2 pounds | Color: Denim, cream, mocha, charcoal, shadow gray | Handles: 2

What We Like
  • No lifting or carrying required

  • Lidded design conceals clothes

  • Durable construction

What We Don't Like
  • Not ideal for stairs

There’s no need to strain your back carrying a heavy load of laundry when you can invest in the best rolling laundry basket. The Sterilite Hamper features two wheels and a retractable handle for a smooth laundering experience.

The basket is on the taller side in comparison to rectangular-shaped bins, and while wider baskets tend to hold more, this hamper can comfortably fit an oversized load.

We were able to fill this plastic basket with three duvets. It can hold four, but you would have to roll it to the laundry room lidless. We think that this rolling version is great for apartment dwellers or college students who make a weekly trek to the laundromat.

Since this laundry basket is on wheels, we wouldn’t recommend it for households with stairs, especially because there are no built-in side handles. It’s the perfect option for those who dislike the sore aftermath of carrying a heavy load from room to room, especially if you have to travel far to do your laundry. Plus, its durable plastic construction and lidded design are an added bonus.

Dimensions: 21 x 14 x 29 inches | Capacity: Not listed | Material: Plastic | Weight: Not listed | Color: White | Handles: 1 retractable handle

What We Like
  • Spacious enough hold up to two duvet covers

  • Easy to clean and wipe

  • Curved design lays comfortably against hips

What We Don’t Like
  • Not the most stylish option

Want to avoid a heavy laundry basket that’s bulky and uncomfortable to carry, especially when stairs are involved? This Rubbermaid laundry basket is constructed with comfort in mind with sides that curve inward and three ergonomic handles that are sturdy and comfortable to hold.

The basket is on the simple side, with a plastic silhouette that only comes in white. It's not the most aesthetically pleasing laundry basket, but its large, 1.5-liter size is spacious enough to hold up to two duvet covers and two to three sheet sets. We also love its open design, which allows for proper ventilation, so there's no need to worry about your damp clothes not drying properly.

The Rubbermaid Hip Hugger Laundry Basket is right in the median laundry basket price of roughly $30, which we were a little surprised by given its simplicity. However, we think its lightness in weight, spacious interior, durableness, and comfortable carry are worth the price.

Dimensions: 25.34 x 17.69 x 10 inches | Capacity: 1.5 liters (bushels) | Material: Plastic | Weight: 1 pound | Color: White | Handles: 3

What We Like
  • Durable nylon construction

  • Can double as decor

  • Foldable design

What We Don’t Like
  • May be hard to clean

For those who tend to look for the cutest option with everything, you might opt for the most stylish laundry basket. If that’s you, consider this low-profile, woven stitched basket from The Container Store. It’s handmade and durably constructed with nylon strapping and can be used to store laundry, blankets, or your kiddo’s toys.

Aside from its ability to double as decor, this basket is small-space friendly. It’s aesthetically pleasing enough to keep in the open and can be folded away when not in use, so if you’re tight on closet space, this is an ideal option.

However, its nylon woven material and closed construction may be hard to clean and won’t offer the best ventilation, so we only recommend using this basket for fully dry textiles.

Dimensions: 15 x 22 x 10.50 inches | Capacity: Not listed | Material: Nylon | Weight: 1.7 pounds | Color: Black and blue | Handles: 2

How should you store laundry baskets?

Storing your laundry basket near your washer and dryer would be ideal, as you wouldn’t have to travel far on wash day. And if space allows, you can also store it in your closet. While changing, you can toss your day clothes straight into the bin.

What We Like
  • Can be used as a storage basket

  • Spacious enough for several loads

  • Various color options

What We Don’t Like
  • Not ideal for those who don’t want their dirty laundry to be visible

If you often put off laundry day, an extra large basket may be your best bet. This woven rope basket is beautifully designed and has enough interior space to hold several loads. We were able to fit more than what our washer could hold in one load.

The Gocan Extra Large Laundry Basket is available in various neutral colors to match any interior design style. It also comes in a taller, slimmer construction, which we feel would be a great option if you don’t want to air your dirty laundry.

While the Gocan holds the most, we think it will make a better storage basket than a hamper, so much so that we started storing our blankets inside.

If we had to change one thing about this basket, we would either make the opening smaller or add a covering. we found the opening to be really wide, so if you don’t want your laundry visibly open, we would either use it for bedding or as a storage basket.

Dimensions: 22 x 22 x 14 inches | Capacity: 90 liters | Material: Cotton | Weight: 4.31 pounds | Color: Beige, black, brown, cream, dark gray, gray, mixed gray, pure jute, pure black, | Handles: 2

Final Verdict

The best overall laundry basket we tested was the Sammart Collapsible Plastic Laundry Basket. This basket is roomy yet collapsible, durable yet easy to clean, and features a clever third handle for easy carrying against your hip. If you're on a budget, consider the HomeHacks 2-Pack Large Laundry Basket, our favorite affordable option that also features a convenient third handle.

How We Picked Laundry Baskets

We put 30 laundry baskets through the ultimate test while completing our regular laundry routine at home for 15 days. We filled the baskets with several loads and carried them to and from various rooms around our homes, evaluating all 30 baskets on their size, ease of carrying, comfortability, design, durability, and overall value.

One of the highest-scoring baskets was the HomeHacks 2-Pack Large Laundry Basket (our best value pick) and the Sammart Collapsible Laundry Basket (our best overall pick). Most of our testers liked the idea of receiving two laundry baskets in one pack, and they also liked the three-handle design for comfortability and the option of carrying on the hip.

Think About Material

Laundry Baskets are made from various materials, each of which comes with its own pros and cons.

  • Plastic: These laundry baskets are lightweight, easy to clean, and practical for everyday use, but similar to our most comfortable to carry pick, the Rubbermaid Hip Hugger, they’re not the most aesthetically pleasing option.
  • Wire: These hard, metal-framed baskets are oftentimes more durable and chic, but they’re prone to snagging delicate items.
  • Fabric: Choose from cotton, nylon, or mesh—fabric laundry baskets are convenient to carry, and with a foldable design, they're great for small spaces. These basket types are also more stylish, like our most stylish option, the Strapping Laundry Basket Black/Off-White, which comes in various prints and color options. You'll want to make sure your load is completely dry before tossing it in a fabric basket since they're usually not well-ventilated.

Choose the Best Size

Basket size is often measured in bushels or liters. The best size depends on how much laundry you do regularly. A basket that can hold one bushel is a good size for one or two people, while a two-bushel basket (like our best plastic option, the Home Logic Laundry Basket) is better suited for a small family.

Consider Storage

Traditional laundry baskets, like the Rubbermaid Hip Hugger (our most comfortable to carry pick), can be tricky to store when not in use, as they’re often quite cumbersome.

If you have a small home with limited storage space, you may want to look for a product designed with space in mind. These include pop-up and collapsible laundry baskets, like the Gocan Extra Large Laundry Basket (our best extra large pick).

Opt for Ease of Cleaning

Look for laundry baskets that can be wiped clean or washed in the machine, says laundry expert Kyrstyn Brown of Zoom Express Laundry. Some of the cloth laundry baskets are collapsible and can easily be machine-washed, she says. The hard plastic ones are easy to clean, as are the kind with outside casing and a bag or liner inside.

Why Trust The Spruce?

This article was written by Kenedee Fowler, a shopping writer for The Spruce, specializing in cleaning products, laundry care, bedding, and the best home products for your space. Whether it was her childhood home, college dorm, or first apartment, Fowler has had her fair share of laundry baskets. She vividly remembers her family’s large plastic basket, similar to our best value pick. It could hold all four of her family member’s laundry, including her own. This basket is so durable; it’s still around today after 20-plus years.

For this guide, Fowler leaned on her personal experience with laundry baskets and our testing insights, picking the top laundry baskets that are easy to use, durable, comfortable to carry, and able to hold decent-sized loads.
