Red meat and rasher sandwiches can be good for you
The salty delicious treats have been tested and research shows they are healthy
RASHER sandwiches could be on the menu as part of a healthy diet, a new study claims.
The salty treat gets a bad rap for raising blood pressure and cholesterol.
Health experts have long believed that red meat meals, such as bacon sandwiches and burgers, contribute to the risk of cardiovascular disease.
However, research now suggests that this is all just a myth.
And when eaten in moderation, both burgers and rasher sandwiches can provide us with many important nutrients — without increasing the risk of illness.
That’s according to a study team based at Purdue University in Indiana, US.
Researchers at Purdue pooled nutrition data from 24 clinical trials to determine the impact of red meat consumption above typically recommended levels.
Research assistant Lauren O’Connor said: “We found eating half a serving per day of red meat, equivalent to a three ounce serving three times a week, didn’t worsen blood pressure, blood total cholesterol, or triglyceride concentrations — all commonly screened by care providers.”
Purdue University Professor Wayne Campbell added: “During the last 20 years, there have been recommendations to eat less red meat as part of a healthier diet.
“But our research supports that red meat can be incorporated into a healthier diet.
“It is a nutrient-rich food, not only as a source for protein but also bio-available iron.”
