This is the fourth episode in our six-part video series where Bob Clagett of I Like to Make Stuff takes on home DIY projects inspired by the features of the new Ford F-150.

You know the drill: You wake up in the middle of the night for a glass of water or to go to the bathroom. But is there anything more discombobulating than having to stumble around in the pitch dark? By installing motion-sensing LED lights under the base of your bed, you’ll avoid that problem with this DIY project. The lights are bright enough to help you find your way, but discreet enough not to disturb your partner or prevent you from falling back asleep. This is the ideal hack for new parents, dorm rooms, partners with different schedules, and anyone else looking for a smart and easy upgrade to their sleeping situation. This DIY project was inspired by the LED box lighting in the Ford F-150 that makes it easy to move gear in and out of the truck, even in the dark.

Ready to make your own motion sensor night light? Watch the video above and follow these simple steps.

Step 1: Cut the LED strip lights to fit your bed

Get a roll of LED strip lights that’s long enough to fit the perimeter of your bed. Only cut the strip at the points demarcated with a pair of scissors, which shows you that it’s safe to cut.

Step 2: Attach the strips below the bed

Peel off the tape backing and stick the LED lights underneath your bed. Some LED strips come with different color options. If you’re using a multicolored strip, use your RGB remote to choose the color you want to wake up to before you go to bed.

Step 3: Plug in the LEDs and the motion sensor

Plug the LEDs into the motion sensor, and then plug the motion sensor into an outlet.

Step 4: Mount or place the motion sensor

Place the motion sensor where you want it in the room. The best place is probably on the floor under your bed or on the nightstand.
