Why does Putin want Ukraine?

My understanding of it-
Putin sees Ukraine as a Russian state and wants it back. That probably makes up less than 20% of his reason but it’s an ideological sentiment that sells well.
The larger reason is tactical. Ukraine is a buffer from potential attack from Europe/nato which Putin evidently believes is a real threst.
As a non nato member, Ukraine remains independent which is great but not entirely reassuring. Ukraine could flip and join nato and that would be a big domino to fall against Russia. He wants guaranteed protection from nato and taking control gives him that.
Then there’s the oil, port access, pipelines and other resources that he wants but doesn’t necessarily “need”. This is probably less than 25% reason.
Timing is good now. Putin knows that nato’s most important member is the U.S and with Dementia Joe in office, he has his shot. So he’s taking it.

This is literally the only reason he's interested. And he doesn't even want the entire country.

Have you seen the Friday Babe Thread on Ukrainian women? I'd invade too!

Ukraine has vast farmland, it’s like the Midwest of Eastern Europe. Russia has limited farmland. Not sure how much that matters currently but Russia has had problems with food shortages in the past.

Congrats... You are seriously just grasping this now, brah?
JK. What you said is correct. This administration and the MSM have a bizarro version that starts with CYA on their behalf. The NATO (yes, that includes us) are complicit in stirring the shite to the point of where we are today.

It’s less of him wanting Ukraine and more of him not wanting Ukraine under the US nuclear umbrella.
We were prepared to start World War 3 when Russia tried putting missiles 90 miles off our coast, so the US press needs to stop acting all shocked that Putin doesn’t want to share over a thousand miles of border with a US armed ally.

It's not a Putin issue. If Alexei Nalvany was the ruler of Russia even he'd be opposed to Nato expansion or even potential Nato expansion into Ukraine. There is no Russian ruler who'd do anything different than what Putin is doing now IMO.
The reason they allowed the Baltics to join Nato in 2004 was because at that point Russia was still weaker and their military was still a dysfunctional mess post USSR collapse.
Russia apparently has an incredibly deep sense of betrayal over Nato expansion into eastern Europe because they were (supposedly) promised it wouldn't happen, and because it occurred at a time when they were too weak to do anything about it, which really humiliated them.
The reason we're on the brink of a war, or might be, is because Russia basically doesn't trust the west anymore after the various color revolutions and regime change operations that have occurred in Iraq, Libya, attempted in Syria, occurred in Georgia, our support for Maidan in Ukraine, etc. They don't believe our word anymore and think they have to take by force from what I've read. The west is no longer seen as a reliable negotiating partner.

Could Putin be doing this solely to flex and see what the US will do? Like could this be a test run against the Biden administration to see how they will react, which he will then potentially use in the future when he really wants to frick shite up?

Putin's next step to getting the old USSR reinstated. Also look who we have in the White House. Biggest pussy ever.

The only relevancy Ukraine has to this situation is the Minsk agreement that has, so far, been completely ignored by signatories and Ukraine itself. The real deal here is about the stationing of nuclear missiles that subvert the Russian shield system in Poland and Romania (and obviously Ukraine if they came in to NATO).
On our end, it is quite obviously about the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. A Russia that has a friendly, or at least cordial, relationship with Germany and the rest of the EU based on mutual trade is a huge threat to our strategic hegemony, especially as Eurasia in general becomes more integrated with China's BRI.
