Sullivan Central High School's marching band is sponsoring the 35th annual Apalachian Classic Marching Band Competition Saturday. It will perform an exhibition, but 19 bands from he region are to perform.
BLOUNTVILLE — It is late October, so it is time for the annual marching band competition at Sullivan Central High School.
The 35th Annual Appalachian Classic Marching Band Competition is set for Saturday, Oct. 26, at Central off Exit 66 of Interstate 81. Gates will open at noon with the competition set to begin at 2 p.m.
Nineteen high school bands from East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia will compete, including Sullivan South, Sullivan East, Sullivan North, Tennessee High, Science Hill, Farragut, Sequoyah and Happy Valley. Bands will be scored on musical and visual performance by a panel of seven judges.
Central’s Cougar Band is scheduled to play its show in exhibition at 9 p.m., with the awards ceremony set for 9:20 p.m. The event is a fundraiser for the Central band and will help fund things such as instrument repairs, music and travel expenses for the band.
The event is open to the public. Tickets are $5 at the gate, and children 5 and younger will be admitted free. The event will have concessions, other food and souvenir vendors. Event T-shirts also will be available for purchase. In addition, attendees will be able to purchase messages or band-o-grams for $2 to show support for their students and bands.
