Preethi Kasireddy, founder of Ferta and TruStory, recently reignited discussions around millennials’ lifestyle choices with her controversial views shared on X (formerly Twitter). She urged millennials in their 30s to prioritise parenthood over travelling in search of self-discovery, arguing that becoming a parent offers a deeper and more meaningful journey of self-understanding than any amount of globe-trotting.
“If you’re in your 30s and still figuring yourself out by travelling the world while being childless, then it’s time to stop,” Kasireddy tweeted. “The simple solution to your endless thirst for ‘figuring yourself out’ is to have a child. Children will teach you more about yourself than any backpacking trip you go on.”
Her statement sparked a heated debate online. While some users agreed with her view that parenthood can be a life-enriching experience, others strongly disagreed. Many highlighted the individual nature of self-discovery and argued that societal norms should not dictate personal milestones.
One user countered, “Parenthood is transformative, no doubt, but self-discovery isn’t a one-size-fits-all journey. Some find purpose through travel, others through family. Let people choose their own map.”
Another user voiced a practical objection, writing, “Raising kids is a 24/7 commitment for 18-20 years. I neither have the time nor the energy to do it. If I do change my mind in the future, I can always adopt.”
A third respondent challenged Kasireddy’s assertion directly, stating, “No, you don’t figure yourself out by having kids. Kids deserve more than someone who’s trying to grow with them. Go ahead and travel. Get that done first. Find a good partner, marry, and then have kids.”
Others took a more balanced view, noting that both travel and parenthood could offer unique paths to self-discovery. “You can’t compare the experience of ‘travelling the world’ with ‘having a child.’ Both are completely different. Each helps you discover yourself in unique ways,” one user remarked.
Kasireddy’s comments touch on a broader debate about the growing trend among millennials to opt for a child-free lifestyle. This choice is influenced by a range of factors, including financial stability, career priorities, mental health, environmental concerns, and changing relationship dynamics. Her remarks highlight the ongoing tension between traditional expectations and the evolving definitions of fulfilment and purpose among younger generations.
