Gua sha: what’s the buzz all about?
Gua sha: what’s the buzz all about?

Thanks to its skin firming and healing abilities, gua sha has achieved cult status a few years back. Ahead, we do a deep dive into what this beauty tool is all about, how it benefits our skin and how one can make the most of it. Here’s the complete lowdown.

Does gua sha really work?

The benefits of gua sha range from better blood circulation and reduced inflammation to softening fine lines and priming your face. “It’s a cost-effective tool and can be easily incorporated into your skincare routine to ensure optimum penetration of the products used,” Dr Madhuri Agarwal, founder and medical director of Yavana Aesthetics Clinic, tells us.

It improves blood circulation and lymphatic drainage

The motion in which you use the stone revs up blood circulation, which can increase the production of collagen and elastin, firming and toning the skin.

It reduces puffiness

Gua sha helps the skin look de-puffed and tighter with regular use. The sweeping movement, combined with the pressure, acts as the pump necessary to improve lymphatic drainage.

It diminishes the appearance of dark circles

Since it helps soften fine lines and stimulates skin-plumping collagen, a gua sha massage can reduce dark circles (at least, temporarily).

How to make the most of your gua sha?

“It’s probably one of the simplest skin therapies out there, but it’s crucial to know the right technique and strokes while you’re using it,” advises Dr Agarwal.

Step 1:

Cleanse your face and dab on a moisturiser, serum or facial oil as a lubricant for your gua sha facial. Refrain from using the tool on bare skin.

Step 2:

Hold the flat side of the gua sha on your skin, under the eyes or any areas that you want to de-puff. Then, gently sweep across your skin. Repeat the process three to five times in each area. You can also work it on your forehead (in short strokes from the centre to each side) and your neck (in short strokes from the bottom to the top).

Step 3:

Use the curved side of the gua sha on the jawline, chin, cheekbones and brow bone to lift and release any tension. Remember to go in with short strokes in an upward direction.

It is best to do the gua sha face massage for five minutes, twice or thrice a week.  You can start with quick facial massages or reserve the tool for a calming nighttime routine.
