Jeollanam-do, South Korea – In a devastating update, authorities have confirmed that nearly all 181 people onboard Jeju Air Flight 7C 2216 are presumed dead.

This was after the aircraft crashed into a wall and erupted in flames at Muan International Airport on Sunday morning.

The Boeing 737-800, carrying 175 passengers and six crew members, veered off the runway shortly after 9 am local time.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the front landing gear failed to deploy, causing the plane to attempt a belly landing.

South Korea’s National Fire Agency reported that only two survivors, both crew members, were rescued from the tail section of the burning aircraft.

According to The Independent, the survivors sustained moderate to severe injuries and are receiving treatment.

The rest of the passengers are presumed dead, with rescue efforts transitioning to recovery operations.

Senior transport ministry official Joo Jong-wan announced that the flight data recorder from the plane’s black box had been recovered.

However, authorities are still searching for the cockpit voice recorder to provide further insight into the cause of the crash.

The Guardian records that this incident marks one of the deadliest aviation disasters in South Korea’s history.

Jeju Air, the nation’s largest low-cost carrier, has expressed profound grief and pledged full cooperation in the ongoing investigation.

Families of the victims are gathering at Muan Airport, awaiting official confirmation and updates on the search efforts.

A temporary morgue has been set up at the airport, but families will be expected to arrange transfers of identified victims to external facilities.
