The top street snowboarders in the world gathered in St. Paul on Saturday to compete once again in the Red Bull Heavy Metal contest on the steps and rails of the state Capitol.
Organizers called the contest “a legendary showcase of the grit, creativity and raw energy that defines street snowboarding.”
“Street snowboarding is a discipline of snowboarding that celebrates creativity and features riders performing tricks on obstacles that are often found outside of ski resorts, including handrails, ledges, stairs, fences and gaps,” the organizers said.
The one-day contest was held in St. Paul in 2024 and featured 20 riders and hundreds of spectators.
“The world-class street snowboarding competition will once again welcome fans to watch sport’s most creative and daring athletes on a custom-built course designed to transform the historic Capitol’s steps and rails into an electrifying arena,” organizers said beforehand.
Snowboarders competing included Minnesota native Benny Milam (2022 Red Bull Heavy Metal winner), Grace Warner (2024 X Games Street Style gold medalist) and Egan Wint (2023 & 2024 Red Bull Heavy Metal women’s winner).
The 2025 Heavy Metal champions were men’s winner Austin Visintainer and women’s winner Veda Hallen.
The event will be broadcast at 9:30 p.m. Feb. 16 on ESPN2. Red Bull Heavy Metal was originally launched in the early 2000s and then revived in 2022 with a successful competition in Duluth, Minn. Since then, the competition has drawn in crowds in Detroit and at the Minnesota state Capitol.
