Groundwater monitoring wells are principally used for observing groundwater levels and flow conditions, obtaining samples for determining groundwater quality, and for evaluating hydraulic properties of water-bearing strata.

The monitoring wells should be surveyed vertically and horizontally. The location survey must achieve a horizontal accuracy of 1.0 feet and the elevation survey must achieve a vertical accuracy of 0.01 foot. Every groundwater monitoring event should include measuring the depth to groundwater in each monitoring well.

Monitoring wells are to be constructed of inert materials that will not compromise the quality of sampled groundwater, and will not deteriorate over time whilst in contact with formation soil, groundwater and contaminants. The most commonly accepted well material used in Yukon is polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic.

Monitoring wells are sometimes referred to as "observation wells." The quality of water intercepted by a monitoring well can range from drinking water to highly polluted water. In contrast, production or "water wells" are usually designed to obtain water from productive zones containing good- quality water.

The monitoring wells were installed to depths ranging from 12 to 20 feet (ft) below land surface (BLS).

A monitoring well consists of a small diameter borehole tube that is sealed in the earth with a permeable screen section at the bottom, in an underground reservoir where water is expected to collect. The water will rise and fall in the tube following the groundwater level and allowing level monitoring of groundwater.
