We are back from the Thanksgiving holiday with a bang, huh? This morning, more than a year after the public first learned that the two were dating, we received word from the palace that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are now, officially, engaged. The wedding will take place in the spring—it is at this point unclear how the timing will coincide with the birth of Kate Middleton and Prince William’s third child, due in April 2018. (That child will become fifth in line to the throne when he or she is born, with Harry moving to sixth in line.)
The couple posed for a photo call in the Kensington Palace Sunken Garden this morning for photographs. Markle wore a white coat with a somewhat elaborate bow for the occasion (Harry wore a suit, natch). The coat, designed by Line the Label, was worn with a dress by P.A.R.O.S.H. (expect both to sell out by lunchtime, if they haven’t already.) This is also our first glimpse of Markle’s engagement ring, which was made by Cleave and Company and designed by, yes, Prince Harry himself; the diamond at the center is from Botswana (a place where the couple has spent a significant amount of time), and the outside stones are diamonds from the collection of Princess Diana. Harry told the assembled reporters at the photo call that he knew Markle was the one for him “from the very first time we met.” Markle said the proposal, which according to the palace happened earlier this month in London, was “very romantic.” (Cue the “awws.”)
The pair will give an interview to BBC’s Mishal Husain later today. We are eager for more details! How did he propose, exactly!?? We want a second-by-second breakdown. What did Kate say when they called her?! Will Markle pals Serena Williams and Priyanka Chopra be bridesmaids? The next few months are going to be quite a ride.
