The El Rey Theatre is an original art deco theatre in the heart of the Miracle Mile, one of Los Angeles' preserved art deco districts. The El Rey was built in 1936 and designed by Clifford Balch. After more than 50 years as a first-class movie house, the El Rey was converted into a live music venue in 1994.

A registered Historic-Cultural Monument, the El Rey has sweeping staircases, VIP balcony lounge, and a grand ballroom equipped with a full stage.

The scene:: El Rey was built in 1936 as a single-screen movie theatre and functioned as a cinema for nearly 50 years. Upon entering the venue, you are welcomed by one of the most ornate marquees in Los Angeles, as you enter the venue, the walls are painted a deep red and the walls and ceilings are covered in chandeliers that glow with pin spot LED lighting, mixing old with the new.
Design:: The three grand chandeliers lining the center of the room are the main focal point of the venue. The walls are draped with red velvet curtains and decorative art deco wallpaper, creating an elegant room for any occasion.
Standout venue features:: The venue comes with a full sound & lighting system, built-in stage, and dance floor. The elevated areas on either side of the stage provide for perfect viewing of the stage and a great space for your VIP guests. The balcony allows for additional VIP seating, including 2 private viewing booths.
Extra perks:: The venue includes 300 art deco chairs, 24 cabaret tables and 3 standing highboys.

From the 1980s to the early 1990s El Rey Theatre was a dance-music club called Wall Street, but since 1994 this theatre has been a live music venue which is now exclusively booked through Goldenvoice.

The theatre was designated as Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument No. 520 on February 26, 1991.

In 1995 it was featured as the main setting of the music video for the Cowboy Junkies' song "Angel Mine" from the Lay It Down album, featuring Janeane Garofalo.

The exterior of the theatre can be seen in the 1984 film Night of the comet and serves as the location where main character Regina (played by Catherine Mary Stewart) works.

In January 2008, comedy rock band The Aquabats shot part of the pilot for their television series The Aquabats! Super Show! in the theater as part of an exclusive partial concert for members of the band's fan club.
