Welcoming warmth waxes into workweek

Another round of rain finds its way into the Carolinas by Wednesday evening.

December’s second full weekend is ending on a chilly and soggy note, but big changes lie ahead this week. While clouds, fog, and patchy drizzle will greet us Monday morning, temperatures should steadily recover into the afternoon. Exactly how *much* they recover is the real question as a stubborn winter wedge slowly erodes from the western Carolinas. Areas south and east of the Queen City could very well soar near 70º Monday afternoon, while areas north and west may struggle to clear the 40s. The Metro will be somewhere in the middle; Charlotte should end up in the mid-50s to start the workweek.

The forecast becomes much simpler as southwesterly winds surge into the Carolinas on Tuesday. Highs will top out in the 60s and lower 70s across the Piedmont and Foothills while the High Country enjoys the upper 50s. A stray shower or two could roll into the WCCB Charlotte viewing area Tuesday evening as a weak rainmaking system approaches from the west, but most communities remain dry through Wednesday morning. A second area of low pressure arrives by Wednesday night, which could bring more widespread rain into the Carolinas through Thursday morning. Much colder air crashes into the region behind this system, setting us up with a chilly and sunny weekend.
