DISCUSS TONIGHT IN THE CORONAVIRUS SITUATION IN MASSACHUSETTS. WE’RE JOINED BY DR. ROBERT DUNCAN, INFECTIOUS DISEASE SPECIALIST AT LAHEY HOSPITAL AND MEDICAL CENTER. THANKS FOR BEING WITH US. DR. DUNCAN: THANK YOU. EMILY: PHASE ONE OF THE MASSACHUSETTS RE-OPENING STARTED TODAY. PLACES OF WORSHIP, HAIR SALONS , AND BARBERSHOPS, AND BEACHES WILL START OPENING. SHOULD PEOPLE BE CONCERNED ABOUT GOING TO ANY OF THOSE PLACES? WHAT IS THE LEVEL OF RISK? DR. DUNCAN: I THINK IT ALLOWS A RETURN TOWARD NORMAL WHILE MAINTAINING CAUTION AND I THINK THERE’S ALWAYS RISK OF INFECTION WELL COVID IS AROUND, BUT I THINK THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS -- WHILE HOPE IT IS AROUND, BUT I THINK THERE ARE THINGS WE CAN DO TO MAKE THAT SMALL AND REDUCE CONCERNS. FIRST OF ALL, PEOPLE SHOULD BE CLEANING THEIR HANDS, WEARING A MASK OUT IN PUBLIC, MAINTAINING PHYSICAL DISTANCE OF SIX FEET OR SO. AVOID PEOPLE ARE SICK. STAY HOME IF YOU ARE SICK. EACH PHASE OF RE-OPENING COULD SPAN 3 WEEKS BEFORE MOVING ON TO THE NEXT. IF WE WERE TO EXPERIENCE A RESURGENCE OF CASES, HOW SOON WOULD IT TAKE TO SEE THAT? DR. DUNCAN: WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED FROM THINGS LIKE MARDI GRAS AND OTHER EVENTS IS THE USUAL TIME TO INFECTION OCCURS TWO OR THREE WEEKS AFTERWARD. IT WILL DEVELOP THE INFECTION WHEN IT SHOWS UP AND ABOUT THAT TIME FRAME. THE FUNERALS IN THE SOUTH AND THE MIDWEST, PEOPLE ARE GETTING TOGETHER CLOSELY, HUGGING, SHARING FOOD TOGETHER AND MOST OF THOSE CASES OCCUR, SOMETIMES AS SOON AS TWO DAYS LATER. EMILY: THESE ARE THINGS TO WATCH IN THE NEXT COUPLE WEEKS. WE ALSO KNOW SOME ELECTIVE PROCEDURES CAN ALSO BEGIN AGAIN AT HOSPITALS. AT LAHEY HOSPITAL, WHAT CAN PATIENTS EXPECT TO SEE, HOW WILL THINGS BE DIFFERENT WHEN VISITORS HAVE BEEN KEPT AWAY FOR WEEKS NOW? DR. DUNCAN: YEAH. WE ARE TRYING TO READAPT. PEOPLE CAN EXPECT TO BE ASKED ABOUT ANY SYMPTOMS THEY MIGHT BE HAVING. THEY WILL BE ASKED TO WEAR A MASK. THEY ARE TRYING TO KEEP VISITORS DOWN TO A DULL ROW -- DULL ROAR SO IT MINIMIZES PEOPLE COMING IN WHO CAN BE INFECTED. THEY ARE SPACING THINGS SO CHAIRS IN WAITING ROOMS ARE KEPT SEPARATE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. IF SOMEBODY IS WEARING A FACE SHIELD OVER THEIR MASK, THAT PROVIDES A NEXT HER LAYER OF PROTECTION.
