"It can all be taken any day" South Plaquemines High School forfeits playoff game after player tests positive for COVID19

Football season now over for South Plaquemines High School

South Plaquemines High School had to forfeit their playoff game on Friday night, after a player tested positive for COVID19 earlier this week. As a result, the season is over for the team. Officials said every coach and player are being quarantined. Lyle Fitte, the Head Football Coach at South Plaquemines High School said, "We just had to shut down the season. It is heart wrenching and tough after all the long hours and the practices. The blood, sweat, and tears. But during this pandemic you can not take for granite someone's health."Fitte said it was no one's fault. But something everyone essentially has to deal with, in some form, amid the COVID19 pandemic. Friday the team would have played Many High School. "It is untimely that we face this. But everyone's health is the most important thing right now," said Fitte. This as COVID19 cases continue to rise in our region and in our schools.Frank Daggs Junior, the Head Football Coach at McDonogh 35 High School in New Orleans said the pandemic as a whole has greatly impacted the high school football season, and recruitment for seniors. "College coaches usually come down in April and May to evaluate talent. They were not able to come. We usually have camps in June and July, we did not have camps this year. That made it very very hard," said Daggs. Daggs said his team was able to play 7 of their 8 games this season, without anyone testing positive for COVID19. Still Daggs said a lot of good talent was overlooked this year. He had a message for senior players. "They are gonna have to get in where they fit in. If they have an offer they should hurry and commit right now. If they are waiting on another offer, it may or may not be there," said Daggs. And for those who were hoping to be the victors Friday night, it is bittersweet. "We were at least able to end on a great note. By winning the first round playoff game. Hopefully next year we can look back on this and say we have grown, and we have really benefitted from COVID," said Fitte. Coach Fitte said the situation should be a message for players to always play like it may be their last game.
