Police: 12-year-old Orange County student arrested for attacking law enforcement officer in school
A 12-year-old student was arrested for attacking a school resource officer on Wednesday, the Orlando Police Department reported.
According to OPD, a student at Lake Nona Middle School became verbally aggressive and physically violent with school staff while school was in session. They say the student struck an officer and removed the radio microphone that allows the officer to communicate with others.
Several attempts were made to de-escalate the altercation, but police say they had to use pepper spray to control the student. Out of an abundance of caution, the student was transported to the hospital for medical clearance.
Police say there are no reported injuries to the student, staff or officer.
"The first reaction was, why would somebody spray a 12-year-old child, but then as I learned more about the story, I'm like he could have been in a bad position. You don't know. Teachers are being hit, attacked by children now. Sometimes you fear what could happen next. I appreciate him not putting his hands on him," parent Sakina Hardnett said.
The 12-year-old has been charged with battery on a school employee, battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting with violence, disruption of an educational institution and depriving an officer of means of communication, according to OPD.
