WHO signs US$ 5.5 million agreement with the Government of Bangladesh

Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW), Government of Bangladesh and World Health Organization (WHO) country office for Bangladesh signed a US$ 5.5 million agreement during a ceremony held at the Ministry’s headquarters in Dhaka on 21 March 2019.

The contract was signed by Prof. Dr Abul Kalam Azad, Director General, Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), on behalf of the MOHFW and Dr Edwin Ceniza Salvador, acting WHO Representative, on behalf of WHO Bangladesh, in presence of the Honorable Minister, MOHFW, Mr Zahid Maleque, MP.

Through the agreement WHO will support the Government of Bangladesh throughout 2019-2021 to ensure the health of Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMNs) in a process of transition from emergency phase to sustained response. The main focus of WHO’s support will be to strengthen public healthcare institutions, strengthen primary care service and referral services as well as medical waste management. WHO will continue to support the leadership and coordination function of the MOHFW in the health response as well.

US$ 5.5 million agreement amount for WHO is a share of US$ 50 million grant from the World Bank and Global Affairs Canada (GAC) as additional financing to be channeled through eight Operational Plans (OPs) of the 4th Health, Population and Nutrition Sector Program (4th HPNSP) of MOHFW. IOM, UNFPA and UNICEF also signed agreement with MOHFW during the ceremony.
