Merge of relief object class and technique

[edit]

Hello Bukk,
relief sculpture (Q245117) and relief sculpture (Q23662753) were for different things, one for the class of sculpture, one for the technique; perhaps they weren't well differentiated, maybe. I think they shouldn't have been merged though. But if you merge them, please fix all the things that depend on those items as well, items like high relief (Q5784272) that now have the wrong subclass of (P279) etc. (Special:WhatLinksHere/Q245117 can help), the IDs like Q245117#P1014 that now have constraint violations and should simply be on three items, so if the merge isn't undone a new item for the technique is needed. Perhaps it's easier to undo the merge. Unfortunately, merges like this one are difficult to undo, since redirect links get resolved by bot, links on other projects get changed, like here. I'm sorry I can't help to fix all this since I don't have much time these days, but I hope you all can fix it asap because the trouble from those merges (there have been many like this) gets only worse and worse by time.
Sorry for my scared scaring comment, comes from some history of unpleasant experiences with similar merges. Please don't take it amiss. It might be quite some work but will be possible to fix. Cheers and happy editing, --Marsupium (talk) 15:19, 23 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It seems bot redirect resolving has affected 399 entities (see toollabs:editgroups/b/KrBotResolvingRedirect/Q23662753_Q245117) and is probably not so difficult to undo. --Marsupium (talk) 15:33, 23 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Duplicate Q61636593 - Why?

[edit]

Hi Bukk,

The pier, Llandudno (Q61636593) is a duplicate of The pier, Llandudno (Q23753599) - did you create it for a specific purpose? You've even replicated the errors from Commons that have already been corrected in Wikidata, i.e. the dimensions. Please search before creating new items. Please don't use unknown (Q24238356)

[edit]

Hi Bukk, thanks for adding all the paintings. Could you please don't use unknown (Q24238356) for the collection (P195) like you did on A winter landscape with figures skating on a frozen river (Q103862808)? Please either use private collection (Q768717) or unknown value. Same for creator (P170), but here anonymous (Q4233718) or unknown value. Thank you, Multichill (talk) 15:40, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

ok. Bukk (talk) 15:47, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, if you're planning to import more paintings from Commons: Create a new item here, but don't add any statements yet. Add the link on the file on Commons. A link to https://quickstatements.toolforge.org to populate the Wikidata item will appear. Import the statements and you just have to do a bit of clean up and add a few by hand. Multichill (talk) 16:36, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the advice. But I didn't quite understood how to do the https://quickstatements.toolforge.org link. Greets!Bukk (talk) 12:50, 7 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Duplicate paintings

[edit]

Hi Bukk, I see you're creating a lot of missing paintings based on Commons. Great! I do notice quite a few duplicates like for example Selfportrait, called La Surprise (The surprise) (Q112252123) & Selfportrait, called Le Silence (The Silence) (Q112252113). Might be better to not work on images from collections that are complete. The collections on Wikidata that are complete are listed at Commons:Data:Completely indexed painting collections.tab. This is used by the artwork template so that if the institution field is set to a completed collection (for example Institution:Nationalmuseum Stockholm), it will add the file to Commons:Category:Paintings from completely indexed collections. Maybe try to match the files in this category to existing items or just skip them? Multichill (talk) 13:21, 6 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Multichill! Thanks for the info. I'll try consider that. Greetz! Bukk (talk) 16:29, 6 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Mr. Attribution was never a painter

[edit]

Hi Bukk, thanks for taking an interest in paintings! Please do not remvove former attributions and please do not assign attribution to the non-human attribution (Q230768), as you did here. Old paintings should have current attributiion but if available, they should also have all their documented former attributions as well. You can deprecate these as neceessary, but in this case I see you reverted a current attribution according to the RKD. See your edits here: https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q17338831&type=revision&diff=1489825797&oldid=1489824924 strange removal of attributions! @Jane023: probably just the script tripping up over the complex templates: {{Creator:Bartholomeus van Bassen|attributed to}}:{{LangSwitch|de=oder|en=or|nl=of}}{{Creator:Dirck van Delen|attributed to}}

Many duplicates items

[edit]

Hello @Bukk

You regularly create items for the Louvre paintings collections; these are almost all duplicates. I've pointed this out to you several times by cancelling your edits( https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q119441048&oldid=1915531040, https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q119440076&oldid=1915527184 , https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q119439842&oldid=1915526289 ...), but you continue this bad practice: yesterday https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q122493936&oldid=1975417956 . Those contributions give extra work to others who rigorously maintain Wikidata items. We all know that many images on Wikimedia Commons are not linked to a Wikidata item. Thats's not a reason to create automatically items on wikidata without check or it would be a huge mess. In that case improving the categorization on Commons would be more useful.

In Wikidata, for Louvre collections artworks there are many ways to check before creating an item if it already exists: search in wikidata, search in collections.louvre.fr and ID check with a SparQL query, Open Art Browser, Gudea website. The same could be done for other collections.

An example among many: you created a duplicate item for Woman with a Mirror (Q23922) which has already an item on Wikidata since 2012 . Please be careful to not create so many duplicates. Best regards Shonagon (talk) 16:12, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Shonagon! How can I find duplicates? The search function of Wikidata didn't report any. I looked in the categories and found any either. Greetz! Bukk (talk) 10:36, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @Bukk
Almost all painting of the Department of Paintings of the Louvre (Q3044768) have already items in wikidata. So the probability of creating duplicates for this collection is extremely high. To be sure that an item creation will not be a duplicate, the best way is to check the ID Louvre which has its property Louvre Museum ARK ID (P9394). Items of Louvre collections should have ark ID which can be found on records in the official website collections.louvre.fr. The collection data are unfortunately only available in French but with creator name and collection, it's easy to reduce the scope of results. I monitor and maintain these Louvre IDs on Wikidata. So to find out if the item has already been created, all you have to do is find the ark ID and do a query on the ID:
SELECT DISTINCT ?item ?itemLabel ?dptLabel ?img (GROUP_CONCAT(DISTINCT ?inv; separator="; ") AS ?invs)
WHERE
{
  ?item wdt:P195 ?dpt.
  ?item wdt:P9394 ?ark.
  VALUES ?ark {"010062292"}.
  OPTIONAL{?item wdt:P18 ?img}
  OPTIONAL{?item wdt:P217 ?inv}
  SERVICE wikibase:label { bd:serviceParam wikibase:language "[AUTO_LANGUAGE],en". }
} GROUP BY ?item ?itemLabel ?dptLabel ?img
Try it!
If there's no item matching the ID, there isn't one yet and it can be created. That's how I do it myself.
For information, you created paintings items which are actually not paintings but pastel drawings. There is not a drop of paint on these 2 works: Portrait of René Frémin (Q122452278) Self-portrait (Q122574680). It's still great to have created them. Nevertheless, this indicates that we should take the information on Wikimedia Commons carefully and check on the official or another authority website before creating an element. Apart from the Louvre's paintings, and in particular the drawings or paintings in others collections, there are still plenty of things to do. Best regards Shonagon (talk) 19:14, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Shonagon! Thank you for your detailed explanation how to find Louvre artworks. I'll try to keep it in mind. Greetz! Bukk (talk) 09:24, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Dataset

[edit]

Hi Bukk,

please remove the final "." from datasets before import, e.g. at Q127574723. Thank you in advance!

PS: In German Pompeii (Q43332) is called Pompeji (at Andromeda liberated by Perseus (Q127573215)).--Bernice Heiderman (talk) 18:26, 18 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the info, especially the correct spelling of the town that got buried by the Vesuv. In case of "Knorrige Eiche bei Namur." I didn't chase the title. Maybe the artist created the title with a dot at the end? Greetz! Bukk (talk) 19:28, 18 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Italian descriptions

[edit]

Hi Bukk, thank you for creating some items about italian paintings. However I see you write in the Italian descriptions like "pittura di Paolo Arri", for example, meaning "painting by Paolo Arri". However "pittura" is the wrong term, the correct one would be "dipinto", so like "dipinto di Paolo Arri". In English language there is not distinction between "pittura" and "dipinto", but in Italian reading those descriptions is confusing. I guess you do it in some automatic way since you do not speak Italian, but I ask you if you please could change it. Thank you again. :-) Phyrexian ɸ 14:35, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, thanks! I'll do that. Greetz! Bukk (talk) 07:09, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I use quick statements to generate the wikidata items. Quick statements automatically writes "pittura di ... " too. (see example screenshot "Quickstatements it.png" on Commons) Regards, Bukk (talk) 07:39, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I was expecting something like that. Have you any idea how to change it? --Phyrexian ɸ 11:55, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! There FAQ on the page https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Help:QuickStatements. One of these is "How do I report issues with the tool?". I propose you ask for a better expression for "painting" in Italian. Greetz! Bukk (talk) 12:27, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
