Properties for listings

These properties apply to the Template:Listing (Q14330485) template in various Wikivoyage languages. Each listing is one individual venue (attraction, hotel, restaurant).

General fields, equivalent property and description from voy:Wikivoyage:Listings. See also: Wikivoyage:Listing editor (Q14633239) and the Template:Listing (Q14330485), {{listing}}, {{vCard}} or {{item}} templates for each individual Wikivoyage language; some add fields which aren't in the others.

coordinate location (P625) will need to be converted to decimal (not DMS) co-ordinates and split into separate latitude, longitude values.

A basic set of fields was originally defined by mw:extension:listings; that extension is deprecated, but the listing template will normally support all of its fields under some name:

  • name > item label: the name of the hotel, bar, restaurant, museum, or whatever. Recommended.
  • alt > native label (P1705): an alternative name for the listing, such as a local-language name or former name. Optional.
  • address P969 (P969): the street address for the business or attraction. Do not include the city (if the same as the page title), the state/province or postal code (except for addresses in the United Kingdom, which should include the post code; see Wikivoyage:Abbreviations for formatting guidelines). Recommended.
  • directions directions (P2795): additional brief directions besides the street address, such as cross streets, nearby subway or bus stations. Optional
  • phone > phone number (P1329): a phone number for making reservations or getting more information (see Wikivoyage:Phone numbers for formatting guidelines). In nearly all cases only a single phone number should be included, but if multiple phone numbers are required then they should be separated with a comma - example: "+1 234-567-8901 (front-desk), +1 456-789-0123 (reservations)". Recommended.
  • tollfree > phone number (P1329) with has characteristic (P1552) toll-free telephone number (Q348308) as qualifier: a toll-free, freephone or "green phone" number, if available. Optional.
  • email > email address (P968): an email address for making reservations or getting more information. (The de:voy vCard has separate fields for three e-mail addresses) Optional.
  • fax > fax number (P2900): a fax number. Optional.
  • url > official website (P856): the URL for the official Web site for this listing (see external links for more guidelines). Include the http://. If there's no official Web site, just leave this part out. Recommended.
  • hours > created as open days (P3025), closed on (P3026), open period from (P3027) and open period to (P3028) : opening hours of the business or attraction, when applicable (see Wikivoyage:Time and date formats for formatting guidelines). Recommended.
  • checkin > no consensus yet: checkin time, for sleep listings only (see Wikivoyage:Time and date formats (Q14325164) for formatting guidelines). Optional.
  • checkout > no consensus yet: checkout time, for sleep listings only (see Wikivoyage:Time and date formats (Q14325164) for formatting guidelines). Optional.
  • image > image (P18): specify the filename to show that file as a tiny pop-up image if the numbered icon displayed on a dynamic map is clicked. Optional.
  • price > proposed - not implemented; price (P2284); fee (P2555) might be an alternative, but is still a single price with currency when what's needed is a price-range. See below for price guidelines for each listing type. Prices should be in the currency accepted at the establishment. Recommended.
    • see: Price of admission. If there are large differences (eg. adults and children), note them both.
    • do: Price of admission, or one turn at the activity.
    • buy: Usually best to omit price, unless the goods sold are all a very similar price.
    • eat > Average price of a main course (or complete meal) for a single person.
    • drink: Price of standard drinks. Use the price of local drinks (glass of red wine, sake, or whatever) if beer and cocktails don't make sense for the locale.
    • sleep > The rack rate/standard price of a typical double room. If there are substantial differences in room types (e.g. dorm bed and single rooms) list brief room descriptions and their respective prices. Do not give a per person cost when twin share is necessary to obtain that rate, eg: $20 per person, when a double room costs $40. For hybrid listings (like a hotel with a pub or restaurant) the price field references the main product (in this case, "sleep"); the description text usually contains the others ("Dockside casino hotel with British-style pub and bistro (€10/main course) on golf course ($18/eighteen holes + $10/golf cart) with pro shop, souvenirs, marina with fuel (boat rental £50/day)")
  • lat > coordinate location (P625): Decimal latitude (GPS coordinates) for map output. Recommended; required if long is present.
  • long > coordinate location (P625): Decimal longitude (GPS coordinates) for map output. Recommended; required if lat is present.
    • Note: lat and long should have the same number of decimal places (using trailing zeroes if applicable); note that more than four decimal places is excessive unless precision of 1 m or less is necessary.
  • content > (no property yet) is the free-form text description as it appears in the Wikivoyage listing, about a paragraph in length. As body text this is language-dependent, with no easy way to re-use it across multiple Wikivoyage languages.
  • type > One of "see" "do" "buy" "eat" "drink" "sleep" "listing" "go" or "city" (or their local equivalents) to match the standard WV article sections. Usually specified implicitly, so a {{see|...}} template infers {{listing|type=see|...}}. If instance of (P31) for an entry is undefined, Wikivoyage could set it based on the type of listing. Recommended; keep local, defaults to "listing".

A few additional fields and properties exist in Wikivoyage but are missing in one or more language editions:

  • wikidata > Wikidata ID in format 'Q123456789'. Likely required to make the rest of this scheme work. ('d' in de.voy, 'wikidata' in fr.voy and en.voy) Keep local.
  • wikipedia > Wikipedia article name in the same language (so, implicitly, fr.voy links to Wikipédia en français). Optional.
  • mobile phone > phone number (P1329) with proposed qualifier - not implemented: a mobile telephone number, if available. (fr, de) The German vCard has both "mobile phone" and "mobile fax" fields for some reason, as well as a separate "intl-area-code" field for the telephone country code. Optional.
  • facebook > Facebook username (P2013): is somewhat similar; the WV field (where supported) is the full URL, P2013 is an ID number only. In language editions where this field does not exist, the link may appear in 'url' (official website) if it's the venue's only online presence. Optional.
  • twitter > X username (P2002): is somewhat similar; the WV field (where supported) is a full URL, P2022 is username with leading @ removed. Optional.
  • google+ > created as Google+ ID (P2847): URL to venue's user-supplied content page on Google+ ('google' on de.voy) Optional.
  • skype > created as Skype username (P2893): Username for instant messenger application (de.voy) Optional.
  • openstreetmap > not supported: OpenStreetMap "element" as a full URL. OpenStreetMap relation ID (P402) is close but not the same; an OSM element may be a node, way or relation. (fr) Optional.
  • wifi > created as Wi-Fi access (P2848): one of yes (Q6452715), no (Q3877443), gratis (Q1543615) or paid (Q24202480). (fr) Optional.
  • handicap > created as disabled accessibility (P2846): (yes, no, with assistance, blank). Template with icon. (fr) Optional.
  • payment cards > created as payment types accepted (P2851): ('credit-cards' in de.voy) Names of card issuers (JCB, UnionPay, MC, Visa, Interac...) as comma-separated text. Optional.
  • star classification > proposed - not implemented: Name of rating system and 1-5 star rating level in that system (eg: "Michelin ★★☆, AAA ◆◆") (es.voy) Optional.
  • name link > (item's interwiki link to Wikivoyage may suffice): Internal link to another article on the same wiki, if one exists. Usually only applies if this listing is a city or park. (fr) Optional, keep local.
  • show and map > Visibility (all, poi, coord, none) and sequential number for map markers in de.voy. A zoom parameter specifies map scale in it.voy. Optional. Keep local.
  • lastedit > retrieved (P813) is very close: Date (yyyy-mm-dd) of last edit or last update to listing (mise à jour). Exists in most WV languages. When editing through listings editor this may be set to the date of edit (similar to timestamp on item page) to indicate the user verifies the listing is current or the venue still open/in operation.
  • A closed flag might be useful to indicate a venue no longer exists and all language WV editions need to remove it. dissolved, abolished or demolished date (P576) is similar: it can be set to unknown date or date/year.

The exact names of each {{listing}} field will vary between languages due to localisation and translation.

The marker template implements a reduced subset of the listing template, retaining these parameters:

  • type > (no corresponding property, possibly instance of (P31) mapping ): type of listing (see, do, buy, eat, drink, sleep, listing, around, city, other, go, vicinity). Required
  • name > item label: name of listing. Required
  • lat > coordinate location (P625): latitude of listing, valid range: -90.0 to 90.0. Required
  • long > coordinate location (P625): longitude of listing, valid range: -180.0 to 180.0. Required
  • zoom > (no corresponding property): zoom level for full-screen map opened when the listing number is clicked – default=17, valid range: 1 to 18 (1=Earth, 18=city block). Optional
  • url > official website (P856): name of listing becomes a link to the specified URL. Optional
  • image > image (P18): name of image for the thumbnail that pops up when the map marker is clicked – "Image:" or "File:" prefix not necessary. Optional

There is also a (rarely-used) event template which expands on {{listing}}. Standard fields like name (required), content (free-form language-specific description text) and all contact/location info match {{listing}} as described above.

Added fields are:

  • year: of the event; if event occurs on the same date each year can enter "annual"
  • month: event starts
  • date: day event starts
  • endyear: year event ends (required only if different)
  • endmonth: month event ends (required only if different)
  • enddate: day event ends (required only if different)
start time (P580), end time (P582), point in time (P585), event interval (P2257), day in year for periodic occurrence (P837) are close. They could possibly address events that recur annually with dates like "last full weekend in July (Q121)".

There are two additional fields to link to the corresponding Wikivoyage destination articles. These are used if the event appears somewhere other than a destination page (ie: on a travel topic or itinerary):

Properties for other common page templates

These templates nominally could draw data from the Wikidata record associated with the current page, subject to the limitation that dynamic map code is currently not Wikidata-aware and expects the data to be in the templates in the article.

Quickbar

These properties apply to the Template:Infobox country (Q14395495), a template which displays an infobox of basic data on a Wikivoyage country destination. On projects where the quickbar is only used at country level (en:, for instance) this is merely Template:Infobox country (Q5621162) by another name. See {{Info Pays}}, below, for an example implementation with a separate (but similar) series of infoboxes for city, park, region and country articles.

The new lua-based version of this template in enwikivoyage uses all these properties and is able to receive all its information only from Wikidata (see voy:en:Module:Quickbar and voy:en:Andorra as an example).

The old-style example quickbar at voy:en:Andorra contained a few fields which are not in the English-language template (and therefore not shown):

  • image image (P18): a photograph of a location or landmark in the country, name with Image: prefix omitted
  • caption media legend (P2096): photograph caption or description
  • flag flag image (P41): image depicting national flag, Flag of (whatever country).svg
  • government basic form of government (P122): type of government (parliamentary democracy, corporate kleptocracy, tyrannical dictatorship, principality, whatever...)
  • area area (P2046): area in square kilometres, text with number and units
  • language: a comma-separated list, append (official) to indicate any that are official language (P37) officially recognised
  • religion: name of most-common local religion(s), P140 is religion of a person or organisation but likely does not apply to national demographics
  • tld top-level Internet domain (P78): Top-level country domain for Internet addresses

The list of fields for Wikivoyage in other languages may vary in name and content. DMOZ Curlie ID (P998) does not appear here as it's in the sidebar.

Info Ville

The Info Ville Template:Infobox settlement (Q5683132), Info Parc Template:Infobox park (Q6055178), Info Région Template:Infobox region (Q10803635) and Info Pays Template:Infobox country (Q5621162) templates are infoboxes for use on city, provincial/national park, Wikivoyage region and country articles. The "quickbar" above is effectively an info box for a country, duplicating one of these.

Available templates vary between languages; fr.voy has all of these plus info templates for museums, amusement parks, city districts and itineraries (among others). There is no English-language counterpart to most of these templates as en:voy applies the "quickbar" infobox to countries but not cities and parks; the field names are unofficial translations (original name in parentheses) from the fr:voy templates.

Info Ville is a quickbar-like info box for city articles which incorporates a mapframe, one photograph and a collection of local data. This template looks to be at least somewhat Wikidata-aware.

Most or all of the fields are optional:

  • name (nom): Name of the city (by default, the name of the current page)
  • local name (nom local) official name (P1448): Name of the city in the local official language; may be preceded by an indicator like {{en}}
  • region (région): name of the immediate parent Wikivoyage region article
  • country (pays) > country (P17): name of the top-level Wikivoyage article for this country. Default to property P17.
  • image > image (P18): a photograph for display in the city info box
  • image caption (légende image) > qualifier media legend (P2096): descriptive text placed under the image
  • lake (lac), sea (mer), ocean (océan), river (cours d'eau, rivière): name of a body of water located in or next to body of water (P206) bordering, surrounding or traversing the city
  • altitude elevation above sea level (P2044): altitude in metres above sea level, stored as a number without the unit "m"; a single average value or a (low, high) range
  • latitude and longitude > coordinate location (P625): (lat, long) for the centre of the embedded OSM mapframe, defaults to property P625
  • zoom > (no property): zoom level for the map in the embedded mapframe
  • map width (largeur carte) > (no property): width (in pixels) of the embedded mapframe
  • map height (hauteur carte) > (no property): height (in pixels) of the embedded mapframe
  • locator map (localisation) > locator map image (P242): image name for a static map (Carte région.svg) as an alternative to the dynamic OSM map
  • area (superficie) > area (P2046):area in km²; a number with the units ( « km² » ) omitted
  • population > population (P1082): population figure (in a specified year)
  • population year (année population) > qualifier point in time (P585): year in which the population figure (above) was counted or estimated
  • demonym (gentilé) demonym (P1549): a gentilic word to identify residents or natives of a particular place (so "Paris" → "Parisian"); gender and language dependent.
  • postcode (code postal) postal code (P281): the local postal code (as an individual code, prefix or range of prefixes which cover the city)
  • telephone prefix (indicatif) : the local country code country calling code (P474) and area code local dialing code (P473) in format +XX YY
  • twinned towns (jumelage) > twinned administrative body (P190): twinning, a list of sister cities or twinned towns for friendship and cultural exchange
  • contact info for visitor center (P2872):
    • address OT (adresse OT): address of an office for official tourism information
    • telephone OT (téléphone OT): phone number of the office of tourism (official destination marketing organisation or convention and visitors bureau)
    • email OT: email for official travel information
    • URL OT: URL for official travel information website
    • facebook OT: URL for official city Facebook page
    • twitter OT: URL for official city Twitter feed
  • official URL (URL officiel) > official website (P856) : URL of municipality website - defaults to property P856 on Wikidata
  • tourist URL (URL touristique) : official URL for the office of tourism (is this a possible duplicate of URL OT?)
  • official language (langue officielle) official language (P37): official language (if more than one, use a comma-separated list)
  • language (langue) > (no property yet): List of other (non-official) languages in local use
  • timezone (fuseau) located in time zone (P421): timezone, UTC+X, included only if the parent region has multiple time zones

  • primary city (chef-lieu): (no property yet, capital city is P36, primary destinations (P1302) is for roads only). Looks to be the administrative capital of a district, chef-lieu (Q956214) in some francophone countries.
  • religions: (no property yet) major religions in this region
  • altitude minimum, altitude maximum: (as for park)
  • for the visitor center (P2872), additional fields hours OT (horaire OT) and tollfree number OT (numéro gratuit OT)

mapframe

Mapframe Template:Mapframe (Q14395215) is used to display a dynamic map in an iframe; it has two required parameters (lat, long) coordinate location (P625) to indicate the location of the map's centre.

The remaining parameters are optional; most are not present in Wikidata and serve only to alter the appearance of the map:

  • zoom: zoom level, default=14, valid range: 0 to 18 or auto (0=Earth, 18=city block, auto=showing all markers)
  • height: height of map frame, default is 420px - should be at least 370 to provide enough space for the layers menu to expand
  • width: width of map frame, default is 420px
  • layer: layer for dynamic map, default is M= Mapnik, but one can use any combination of: O= Mapquest Open, W=Mapnik b&w, T=Tourism, N= Traffic line Network, R= Relief map, A= Mapquest Aerial, P= Points of interest, L= Labels, H= Hiking, S= hill Shading, C= Cycling, D= Destinations, G= GPX tracks, B= Boundaries.
  • staticmap locator map image (P242): static map image, a normal png or svg file
  • align: alignment of map frame, default is right (other values are "left" and "none" (center))
  • name (label): name of the location as you want it to appear in the caption - default display is the article title with parent page and disambiguation removed.

routebox

The {{routes}} or {{routebox}} templates Template:Routebox (Q14626862) list highways or rail lines through a city or region. This normally appears in the "go next" section at the end of a Wikivoyage destination article.

There may be multiple routes listed (for instance, much of Interstate 40 (Q94209) duplicates U.S. Route 66 (Q79934) or paves right over it). A routebox may therefore contain several records (the existing template has space for ten).

Each of these records may contain icons and links for three highway numbers; two or three numbered highways may go to the same cities or even be posted onto the same physical road as concurrency (Q5159092). Each record has the road going two possible directions, with two "next" cities listed for each direction.

The fields for each road (only the first is shown) look like:

primary destinations (P1302) is related, but appears just to be a list of every officially-posted control city on one entire road, in no particular order (M25 motorway (Q19872) for example). Without sequence nor direction, this can't replace {{routebox}} which lists the next city and next major city with a Wikivoyage article - relative to the current page as a form of manual linked list. adjacent station (P197) identifies the next station (and direction) for a rail line, but not the "next major city" beyond that station. All of these fields are repeated for each road in the list, to a nominal maximum of ten.

geo

The Template:Geo (Q14394384) templates have two required parameters, (latitude, longitude): coordinate location (P625). Wikivoyage co-ordinates are decimal WGS84, not DMS.

There is one optional parameter:

  • zoom (no property yet): is the level of zoom on a dynamic map. A zoom level of 13-15 is suitable for cities, while regions use 10-12 depending on their area. If not specified, the default zoom level is 13.

stbox

The article status {{stbox}} template Template:Stbox (Q18192892) is normally hidden behind wrapper templates like {{usablecity}}. There are two required parameters:

  • type (no property yet): Wikivoyage article type. For destinations, one of district, city, region, country, continent, airport, park or dive guide. An article may be an itinerary, a travel topic, a phrasebook or a disambiguation page if it is not an individual destination.
  • status (per-language, no property): One of stub, outline, usable, guide or star. Wikidata has a "badge" attribute in the interwiki links which is not a direct replacement. Featured articles are normally star or guide. A stub is missing the entire standard second-level header set, an outline lacks one or more of a way in, something to see or do, somewhere to eat, somewhere to sleep.

Articles tagged with {{extraregion}} or {{disamb}} have no status rating.

The status of articles on the same destination varies widely between languages; a Wikivoyage page in the local language often offers markedly better coverage.

Articles currently use the following badges: featured article badge (Q17437796), good article badge (Q17437798), recommended article (Q17559452). Articles with many are: Vatican City (Q237), Florence (Q2044), Madrid (Q2807), United States of America (Q30), Berlin (Q64), Saint Petersburg (Q656). Specialized badges for Wikivoyage could be requested.

isPartOf

The Template:IsPartOf (Q14205332) templates have one parameter, a link to the immediate Wikivoyage parent region. These appear once-per-page to invoke #isIn: in mw:Extension:GeoCrumbs, generating the breadcrumb (fil d'Ariane) links under the page title. There is one required parameter:

  • region (no property yet): link to the Wikivoyage article for the parent region for this destination. On fr: the 'région' tag appears in {{Info Ville}}. This system breaks for places like Glenrio (Q1531151) which straddle region boundaries but are too small to break into two or three different articles.

Template:Routebox (Q14626862) and Template:IsPartOf (Q14205332) (which link to adjacent destination, parent region articles) may be poor candidates for inclusion in Wikidata as they reflect the page structure of one individual Wikivoyage edition. The more extensive the coverage in one particular language, the more subregions are layered to describe one corner of a province or federated state; likewise, the larger project has "go next" entries for many small villages which other editions may have amalgamated or omitted.

Tourist offices

Create a new Wikidata item for each tourist office and link to it from the city item with visitor center (P2872).

Official tourist office

The way to distinguish an official tourist office from other tourist offices has been discussed at Wikidata:Property_proposal/official_tourist_website.

The tourism agency (Q26989327) can be distinguished from all the other visitor center (Q18411786) because the specific instance added in the property visitor center (P2872) wiil be an instance of (P31) the specific type of agency.

While a toponym can have many visitor center (Q18411786), only one tourism agency (Q26989327) can exist for each toponym.

Most restaurants/bars/hotels/etc described at Wikivoyage are currently not on Wikidata. Having them on Wikivoyage presents merits and demerits:

Merits:

  • Could improve collaboration between Wikivoyages in different languages.

Demerits:

  • Before collaboration between Wikivoyages can happen, a number of technical issues need to be solved.
  • Prose description is an important part of a listing, and not shareable between languages.
  • Large number of items.
  • Restaurants and bars in particular appear and disappear very fast, which would lead to many items having an end time (P582).
  • Deletion of an item from Wikidata will break (and has broken) the corresponding Wikivoyage listing; see Wikidata:Project chat#Quick deleting of needed WD items posted 06:58, 1 March 2017 (UTC).
