You have a very large assortment of information on your page. I have been looking at past postings you have put onto your site. Thank you for helping out with the Intercultural Communication class. Although I am still working out the kinks with navigating Wikipedia, it is nice to see someone genuinely do a random act of kindness; regardless if it was virtually sent!

::The creator may remove the notice because he doesn't want it deleted or he may repopulate it after the notice is placed with articles that may not be appropriate for the cateogry. There may be good reason the category was emptied, so the creator will need to contest the deletion. If not that, all you have to do is repopulate, not remove the tag, and let an administrator verify its contents and not delete it. That will save yourself a step. It's not going to get deleted with a legit article in it anyway, and it follows procedure. --<font color="blue">Star</font><font color="orange">cheers</font><font color="green">peaks</font><font color="red">news</font><font color="black">lost</font><font color="blue">wars</font>Talk to me 19:29, 4 December 2012 (UTC)

::::: I think this statement from WP:DAYS sums it up. "In keeping with the layout in the template, entries should be formatted using &ndash; because it is easier to be consistently duplicated in new entries. Often editors will use the - instead of the – without knowing the difference. Since – is proper for these pages, it is better to leave them as &ndash;." Most editors don't know the difference between - and – and use them interchangeably. In order to keep the date pages consistent, and since there are an awful lot of – on the pages, it's best to use the &amp;ndash;. This was originally implemented back in April 2009 and it's been very good at keeping the pages consistent. In fact, WP:DASH even says "type them in as &amp;ndash;" so the date pages are not outside of the guideline. -- <font color="#000080">Mufka</font> (u) (t) (c) 00:23, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

odFormatting I don't understand how that is easier and WP:DASH actually says "type them in as &amp;ndash;" or to use the pull-down menu, which would insert the character itself. Controlling the formatting on these pages is actually fairly easy, especially since you (and others) watch them and since you could even create a bot that solely enforces dash consistency on those pages. It would require little to no effort and ensure that the Manual of Style isn't broken on account of this series of articles. —Justin (<span style="color:grey">koavf</span>)<span style="color:red">❤T☮C☺M☯</span> 18:20, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

:"Or" indicates that either is acceptable so there's no damage to the MOS. Most users, especially new users, probably don't know that the insert pulldown exists or what it does or, in this case, that it's necessary. I've been here quite a while and I've never touched it. If you don't know the difference between - and — you're not going to know that you need to do anything other than hit - on the keyboard. In the time since the change was made, the number of formatting inconsistencies have been very few and very obvious to fix. ::Formatting Well, it would be easily fixed manually or automatically, as I pointed out. The brokenness is not that an HTML string is introduced instead of a character (although that is a problem), but that non-breaking spaces aren't being introduced before ndashes. —Justin (<span style="color:grey">koavf</span>)<span style="color:red">❤T☮C☺M☯</span> 19:10, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

:::The argument that a nbsp is necessary to prevent the end-of-line displacement of elements that would be awkward at the beginning of a new line isn't a concern as these ndashes are all in the same place in the line and are never near the end. Do you think we need this scheme yet for :Category:Mixtape albums by year? It still doesn't seem that many overall to require this level of diffusion, although I guess eventually it will get there. There was a CFD last year in which these were deleted (see :Category:Mixtape albums by date). :Mixtapes Part of me thinks it can be speedily deleted as recreation of deleted material, but at the very least, we can use AWB to add up how many mixtapes there are and see if it requires diffusion. In the case of (e.g.) :Category:Debut albums, that got large enough to warrant diffusion and diffusing by year is actually meaningful, whereas (e.g.) :Category:Debut albums by genre and :Category:Heavy metal debut albums would not be as meaningful. —Justin (<span style="color:grey">koavf</span>)<span style="color:red">❤T☮C☺M☯</span> 07:00, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

:::Precedent English-language singers and English-language songs weren't further divided into categories that also diffused other categorization schemes. And I still think that those deletions were erroneous anyway. By this line of thinking, we would convert all English-language media categories. Justin, I just uploaded 5 photos of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young- each has one photo on their article I placed this week. In addition, there's another photo of Stills and Young together on Young's page. Also on Young's page is a photo from the 1970s I uploaded a couple years ago I think. So, here's my problem: the Creative Commons licenses are correct, everything is good, but I forgot to ask the photographers to remove their frames or watermarks from those photos-- making it 5 with watermarks, and that old one with the frame. Can you please help remove those things? Or maybe if you don't or can't, can you find someone who is able to fix those things? --Leahtwosaints (talk) 11:37, 29 January 2013 (UTC)

:::::I think one of the issues has been that many Protestants are not terribly excited about acknowledging Latter Day Saints as Christians, let alone part of the Protestant world. So the Latter Day Saints reaction has often been, "fine, we didn't want to be Protestants anyway". Mormonism and Christianity has some discussions about this. I think it is a complex issue, since Mormonism definitely started out with a certain Protestant flavour, but by the 1840s was quite divergent. Most of the debate today centers around whether Latter Day Saints are Christians at all. Latter Day Saints almost always say yes, many Protestants and Catholics say no. odRestorationist Does that make them any different from other Restorationist/Adventist groups (other than those who have explicitly moved toward Mainline status)? —Justin (<span style="color:grey">koavf</span>)<span style="color:red">❤T☮C☺M☯</span> 23:38, 31 January 2013 (UTC)
:Those other Restorationist groups are probably the ones that are most similar to Mormons, so they are grouped within that group. Mormons would probably reject such a grouping, as they see themselves as unique, but I think it's a fair classification. I would say that the primary difference is Mormons believe in an ongoing restoration—they have a prophet and new revelation continues to be given. They don't just claim to be a restoration of original Christianity—they claim that their leaders have a "line to Jesus", as it were, and they make minor changes as needed to church structure (and very occasionally doctrine) adapt to changing circumstances in the world. Oh—and the whole "additional scripture" thing—the Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price. That's a pretty big difference. Good Ol’factory (talk) 23:44, 31 January 2013 (UTC)
::Categorization Fundamentally, there are three perspectives to bear in mind here and I'm not sure that any of them has a trump card: Mormons themselves, (other) Protestants, and third-party groups (e.g. religious studies scholars.) Considering how Mormons view themselves, (other) Protestants view Mormons, and how third parties view them can give us a perspective on what to do, but if as you say Mormons don't view themselves as Protestants, then I'm find with upmerging them to more generic Christians. —Justin (<span style="color:grey">koavf</span>)<span style="color:red">❤T☮C☺M☯</span> 23:47, 31 January 2013 (UTC)
:::I'll search around some of the literature to get some third-party views. I can't recall ever seeing a source that discusses Mormons as Protestants, but I'll try and see if there are any. Not uncommonly, from some Christian writers, they get classified as "cult" or even "new age", but more neutral sources tend to put them in classifications called "new religious movements", "Restorationism", or even I've seen them in "other". == Hi from Campus Ambassador for Illinois State University ==

Hi, Justin.
My name is Mayuko Nakamura and I'm a campus ambassador for Illinois State University. Thank you for agreeing to help SOC318:Children in Global Perspective. This is my first time helping faculty as an ambassador (I had another class a year and half ago but my involvement was minimal as there was another campus ambassador for the class). I just want to check if it's OK to have students ask you questions by adding a new section. Or would you like to create a section for all questions for Illinois State so you can organize your talk page better?

You have a very large assortment of information on your page. I have been looking at past postings you have put onto your site. Thank you for helping out with the Intercultural Communication class. Although I am still working out the kinks with navigating Wikipedia, it is nice to see someone genuinely do a random act of kindness; regardless if it was virtually sent!

Uzwiki

Hi there! We noticed that you have a userpage on the Uzbek Wikipedia. If you need help translating something into Uzbek on your userpage or in an article, let us know! Nataev (talk) 08:09, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

Thanks I am completely ignorant of Uzbek and the most I could ever add to your project is interwiki links and pictures, but I'm grateful for your offer! —Justin (koavf)TCM 08:11, 3 December 2012 (UTC)
You're welcome! Take a look at this if you have time. Nataev (talk) 08:13, 3 December 2012 (UTC)
Censorship Although I am ignorant of Central Asia, I do know that post-Soviet strongmen rule the -stans. I suppose you should be lucky that you never had a maniac like Niyazov running your country. I honestly appreciate the hard work of everyone who wants to spread free culture and knowledge in places that are less free than my home. —Justin (koavf)TCM 08:18, 3 December 2012 (UTC)
Yes, indeed. Central Asian states are still run by strongmen. Even though uzwiki is blocked in Uzbekistan, we're doing our best to contribute to and improve it. One of our user has been working on making uzwiki pages load on a secure connection by default. That would be very helpful. Nataev (talk) 08:23, 3 December 2012 (UTC)
Secure connections I wish I could be of some technical help as well, but I'm too ignorant and impotent there as well. If the Soviet Union can fall non-violently, then so can the -stan strongmen (just look at Burma!) Until then, I suppose you have Tor. —Justin (koavf)TCM 08:38, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

Harmonia Mundi live albums

The speedy notice explicitly states, "If this category does not meet the criteria for speedy deletion, or you intend to fix it, please remove this notice, but do not remove this notice from pages that you have created yourself." You did not read the "but". --StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 19:13, 4 December 2012 (UTC)

Huh I wonder why that would be... What's the point of that? If I populate the category, why wouldn't I take out the notice? —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:15, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
The creator may remove the notice because he doesn't want it deleted or he may repopulate it after the notice is placed with articles that may not be appropriate for the cateogry. --StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 19:29, 4 December 2012 (UTC)

Date pages

Please stop changing the dashes on the date pages. More to come. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 19:36, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

Dashes Why? Did you see WP:DASH? —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:37, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
Did you see Template:Editnotices/Page/August_31? WP:DAYS? I'll be right back. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 19:42, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
Remember this conversation? This is especially troubling since we went over this before. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 19:44, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
Rollback I see that you've rolled back my edits. I'm confused as to why dates are supposed to be different from the rest of Wikipedia's articles. —Justin (koavf)TCM 23:38, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
I think this statement from WP:DAYS sums it up. "In keeping with the layout in the template, entries should be formatted using – because it is easier to be consistently duplicated in new entries. Often editors will use the - instead of the – without knowing the difference. Since – is proper for these pages, it is better to leave them as –." Most editors don't know the difference between - and – and use them interchangeably. In order to keep the date pages consistent, and since there are an awful lot of – on the pages, it's best to use the &ndash;. This was originally implemented back in April 2009 and it's been very good at keeping the pages consistent. In fact, WP:DASH even says "type them in as &ndash;" so the date pages are not outside of the guideline. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 00:23, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

Formatting I don't understand how that is easier and WP:DASH actually says "type them in as &ndash;" or to use the pull-down menu, which would insert the character itself. Controlling the formatting on these pages is actually fairly easy, especially since you (and others) watch them and since you could even create a bot that solely enforces dash consistency on those pages. It would require little to no effort and ensure that the Manual of Style isn't broken on account of this series of articles. —Justin (koavf)TCM 18:20, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

"Or" indicates that either is acceptable so there's no damage to the MOS. In passing, an editor may not notice that one line has a - and the next has a —. But anyone can see the difference between - and &ndash;. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 18:39, 6 December 2012 (UTC)
Formatting Well, it would be easily fixed manually or automatically, as I pointed out. The brokenness is not that an HTML string is introduced instead of a character (although that is a problem), but that non-breaking spaces aren't being introduced before ndashes. —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:10, 6 December 2012 (UTC)
The argument that a nbsp is necessary to prevent the end-of-line displacement of elements that would be awkward at the beginning of a new line isn't a concern as these ndashes are all in the same place in the line and are never near the end. I suggest that &nbsp— is a more convoluted solution to a problem that doesn't need fixing. Can we agree that WP:BROKE is appropriate here? -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 19:40, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

Artist albums categories

Good job. You are an epic boss at this site. You are able to not hug da panda. DPandaOPande (talk) 22:21, 8 December 2012 (UTC)DPandaOPande Please be careful when replacing direct category declarations with albums category on an artist albums category, as it may result in undesirable or incorrect new categorization. Just as one example, you added the template to Category:Veal albums, resulting in that category getting filed in Category:Veal — but Category:Veal pertains to the food, not the band, and thus Category:Veal albums does not belong in it. Thanks. Bearcat (talk) 17:44, 8 December 2012 (UTC)

Hello Koavf, I removed the prod from the above article as it has been previously proposed for deletion. Thank you. Rotten regard 17:51, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Template:Film ratings, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion debate, such as at articles for deletion. Under the specified criteria, where an article has substantially identical content to that of an article deleted after debate, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Betty Logan (talk) 10:07, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

Hand-coding

Hey all :).

I'm dropping you a note because you've been involved in dealing with feedback from the Article Feedback Tool. To get a better handle on the overall quality of comments now that the tool has become a more established part of the reader experience, we're undertaking a round of hand coding - basically, taking a sample of feedback and marking each piece as inappropriate, helpful, so on - and would like anyone interested in improving the tool to participate :).

You can code as many or as few pieces of feedback as you want: this page should explain how to use the system, and there is a demo here. Once you're comfortable with the task, just drop me an email at okeyes@wikimedia.org and I'll set you up with an account :).

If you'd like to chat with us about the research, or want live tutoring on the software, there will be an office hours session on Monday 17 December at 23:00 UTC in #wikimedia-office connect. Hope to see some of you there! Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 23:23, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

Mixtape albums by year

Do you think we need this scheme yet for Category:Mixtape albums by year? It still doesn't seem that many overall to require this level of diffusion, although I guess eventually it will get there. There was a CFD last year in which these were deleted (see Category:Mixtape albums by date). Just wanted to pass it by you for your thoughts. --StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 03:52, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

Mixtapes Part of me thinks it can be speedily deleted as recreation of deleted material, but at the very least, we can use AWB to add up how many mixtapes there are and see if it requires diffusion. In the case of (e.g.) Category:Debut albums, that got large enough to warrant diffusion and diffusing by year is actually meaningful, whereas (e.g.) Category:Debut albums by genre and Category:Heavy metal debut albums would not be as meaningful. —Justin (koavf)TCM 07:00, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

song|class=redirect

Hi Koavf,

I notice that you have created some talk pages for song redirects lately. These contain just the template song, without any parameters. Unfortunately, this results in the page being put into the category Unassessed song articles and adds to the number of unassessed pages for WikiProject Songs, here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Songs#Progress. For an example see http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:I%27m_a_Bad,_Bad_Man&oldid=529695183.

So someone has to assess them on the quality scale and add a class=redirect parameter to the song template. This results in the redirect page being removed from the Unassessed song articles category and put into the NA-Class song articles category. See http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:I%27m_a_Bad,_Bad_Man&direction=next&oldid=529695183 for an example.

Would it be possible to include the class=redirect parameter (in appropriate cases) when you create the talk pages?

R.E.M. discography

Saw your revert to my edits over at the R.E.M. discography. How can I incorporate my edits to the article more smoothly for assessment? I've saved a draft of my last revision to the page as a user subpage for the meantime. Perhaps editing each section individually, with the changes explained in the edit summaries? Holiday56 (talk) 12:49, 26 December 2012 (UTC)

Exactly Editing each section individually would be perfect. You've done a lot of good work here, but I think that the change in question lost too much. —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:53, 26 December 2012 (UTC)

Ted Niceley

Just noticed you re-directed Ted Niceley to Ted Nicely. Just did some quick research and this appears to be incorrect. Allmusic[1], Discogs.com[2] and even his own LinkedIn profile[3] suggest that the original spelling is correct. Can you comment on the rationale behind the re-direct? Maybe I'm missing something. Thanks. --Yankees76 Talk 14:51, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

No problem! I caught it because I noticed someone else making the correction[4] on another article, and dug a little deeper. We might have to go and fix a few more of these corrections. I just noticed the Nicely spelling on the Fugazi page. Cheers. --Yankees76 Talk 19:14, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

Dear Justin/Koavf,

Since you seem to be a rational soul and know about Greek philosophy, Early Christianity, the MENA area, and the "Byzantine" (no pun intended!) subtleties of 'old European' cultural categorization and Church(es) history, I’m writing to draw your attention to the fact that some reckless Wiki-Boeotians want to delete the “People of Levantine-Greek Orthodox Christian descent” and the “American of Levantine-Greek Orthodox Christian descent” categories!

Bad fix

This kind of edit should count -10 on your edit total to make you slow down and look at the problem before fixing it. Dicklyon (talk) 19:22, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

What? I have no idea what you're talking about: the mark-up for the file was misformatted and I fixed it, the article had no lead so I tagged it. What's the matter? —Justin (koavf)TCM 00:57, 10 January 2013 (UTC)
The matter is that you didn't look at the immediately preceding edit and revert the vandalism. A half-assed fix that hides vandalism from view is much worse than no fix at all. Dicklyon (talk) 00:59, 10 January 2013 (UTC)
Vandalism Sometimes I revert vandalism, sometimes I don't. If I went through the edit history every time I saw an article that had a problem, then I would never sleep. Instead, I tagged it so that users who are either interested in the topic or who are interested in adding leads to articles can fix it. Evidently, you are one of those two groups, so it got fixed. I don't understand what your point is. —Justin (koavf)TCM 01:02, 10 January 2013 (UTC)
The only reason it got fixed is that I saw it on my watchlist seconds before you "fixed" it. If you're going to fix things, it's best to at least see if those things are due to the immediately preceding edit, so you can fix them properly. Dicklyon (talk) 02:42, 10 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks I appreciate your attempt to be helpful, but you're being really rude and I've already explained to you that I don't have the time or energy to go through every edit history when I see a problem with an article. I did in fact fix it and if you don't think that I fixed it enough, then I'm okay with that. I'm glad that you have it watchlisted so that you can fix it even better, but I don't know what you're trying to accomplish here. No one on Earth is going to do what you want just because you come to his talk page and act rude to him. —Justin (koavf)TCM 04:09, 10 January 2013 (UTC)
The point of my original comment, "should count -10 on your edit total", was that your quest for huge numbers of edits where you don't have time to see if they make sense is doing more harm than good, and that you ought to somehow feel a penalty for the harmful ones. I get that that doesn't fit your style. Dicklyon (talk) 04:12, 10 January 2013 (UTC)
Okay Being ruder won't make me more liable to listen to you. Kind of the opposite, actually. —Justin (koavf)TCM 04:13, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

Category:English-language albums

Hi, I was dismayed to notice you adding pages to Category:English-language albums. It seems to me that Category:English-language songs is absolutely an example to follow with this category. Can we just implement this, or do you think I should take it to CFD? – Fayenatic London 18:56, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

What? Why are you dismayed? —Justin (koavf)TCM 18:58, 10 January 2013 (UTC)
No offence intended... it seems a pointless labour to me. Do you think it's useful, with a vast population repeating nearly all the contents of the Albums tree? Category:English-language singers was the precedent followed here for songs. – Fayenatic London 20:44, 10 January 2013 (UTC)
Precedent English-language singers and English-language songs weren't further divided into categories that also diffused other categorization schemes. And I still think that those deletions were erroneous anyway. By this line of thinking, we would convert all English-language media categories. Plus, the assumption that things are in English because this is in English is frankly asinine. This scheme has existed for years and I've been adding articles to it for years. —Justin (koavf)TCM 23:11, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

thanks for answer. bye Alborzagros (talk) 10:29, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
I'm sorry, but "Which president was Abraham Lincoln in order?" simply doesn't make sense to me. I don't think you could ask that question to a native English speaker and expect them to understand it. I think the most idiomatic way of asking this question is "What number president was Abraham Lincoln?" garik (talk) 00:45, 14 January 2013 (UTC)

Wikipedia Ambassadors update

Hi! You're getting this message because you are or have been a Wikipedia Ambassador. A new term is beginning for the United States and Canada Education Programs, and I wanted to give you an update on some important new information if you're interested in continuing your work this term as a Wikipedia Ambassador.

You may have heard a reference to a transition the education program is going through. This is the last term that the Wikimedia Foundation will directly run the U.S. and Canada programs; beginning in June, a proposed thematic organization is likely to take over organizing the program. You can read more about the proposal here.

Another major change in the program will take effect immediately. Beginning this term, a new MediaWiki education extension will replace all course pages and Ambassador lists. (See Wikipedia:Course pages and Help:Education Program extension for more details.) Included in the extension are online volunteer and campus volunteer user rights, which let you create and edit course pages and sign up as an ambassador for a particular course.

If you would like to continue serving as a Wikipedia Ambassador — even if you do not support a class this term — you must create an ambassador profile. If you're no longer interested in being a Wikipedia Ambassador, you don't need to do anything.

Please do these steps as soon as possible

First, you need the relevant user rights for Online and/or Campus Ambassadors. (If you are an admin, you can grant the rights yourself, for you as well as other ambassadors.) Just post your rights request here, and we'll get you set up as quickly as possible.

Once you've got the ambassador rights, please set up at a Campus and/or Online Ambassador profile. You can do so at:

Going forward, the lists of Ambassadors at Special:CampusAmbassadors and Special:OnlineAmbassadors will be the official roster of who is an active Ambassador. If you would like to be an Ambassador but not ready to serve this term, you can un-check the option in your profile to publicly list it (which will remove your profile from the list).

After that, you can sign on to support courses. The list of courses will be at Special:Courses. (By default, this lists "Current" courses, but you can change the Status filter to "Planned" to see courses for this term that haven't reached their listed start date yet.)

As this is the first term we have used the extension, we know there will be some bugs, and we know the feature set is not as rich as it could be. (A big wave of improvements is already in the pipeline. And if you know MediaWiki and could help with code review, we'd love to have your help!) Please reach out to me (Sage Ross) with any complaints, bug reports, and feature suggestions. The basic features of the extension are documented at Wikipedia:Course pages, and you can see a tutorial for setting up and using them here.

Communication and keeping up to date

In the past, the Education Program has had a pretty fragmented set of communication channels. We're trying to fix that. These are the recommended places to discuss and stay up-to-date on the education program:

 1. The education noticeboard has become the main on-wiki location for discussion of the Education Program. You can post there about broad education program issues as well as issues with individual courses.
 2. The Ambassadors Announce email list is a very low-traffic announcements list of important information all Ambassadors need to be aware of. We encourage all Ambassadors (and other interested Wikipedians) to subscribe to the list; follow the instructions on the link to add your email address.
 3. If you use IRC regularly, or need to try to reach someone immediately, the #wikipedia-en-ambassadors connect IRC channel is the place to find me and fellow Ambassadors.
Ambassador training and resources

We now have an online training for Ambassadors, which is intended to be both an orientation about the Wikipedia Ambassador role for newcomers and the manual for how to do the role. (There are parallel trainings for students and for educators as well.)

Please go through the training if you feel like you need a refresher on how a typical class is supposed to go and where the Ambassadors fit in, or if you want to review and help improve it. If there's something you'd like to see added, or other suggestions you have for it, feel free to edit the training and/or leave feedback. A primer on setting up and using course pages is included in the educators' training.

The Resources page of the training is the main place for Ambassador-related resources. If there's something you think is important as a resource that's not on there, please add it.

Finally, whether or not you work with any classes this term, I encourage you to post entries to the Trophy Case whenever you see excellent work from students or if you have great examples from past semesters. And, as always, let students (and other editors!) know when they do things well; a little WikiLove goes a long way!

What's going on? I definitely didn't give this, but why would someone fake my name? Nyttend (talk) 14:55, 16 January 2013 (UTC)
No one faked your name. As you could clearly see from the wikicode [5] [6], your name was not contained anywhere. The template used above was supposed to be substituted but was not. It apparently puts the last person to revise the page as the name. You can confirm that in the template Template:Blank WikiLove. Nil Einne (talk) 18:31, 16 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi, Koavf!

I'm just letting you know that I signed up to work with you on this course alongside you. I hope we can work together!

Western Sahara

I've nominated Western Sahara, which you created, for deletion at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2013 January 16. Nyttend (talk) 14:54, 16 January 2013 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Category:Adult contemporary music albums requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia, because it appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion process. If you can indicate how it is different from the previously posted material, contest the deletion by clicking on the button that looks like this: which appears inside of the speedy deletion () tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's discussion directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Administrators will consider your reasoning before deciding what to do with the page. If you believe the original discussion was unjustified, please contact the administrator who deleted the page or use deletion review instead of recreating the page. Thank you. This looks like a repeat of Category:Adult contemporary albums. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 19:49, 16 January 2013 (UTC)

Thanks I think you're right--it's a radio format, not a genre. Good catch. —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:54, 16 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi there!

Hey! I just wanted to say thanks for helping with our class! :) Amyhallstrom (talk) 19:33, 18 January 2013 (UTC)

Redundant content/fork

I'm having a disagreement with an editor at Talk:The Weeknd#Music... over whether an addition is trivial or not to a musician BLP article. Should the editor's addition of a song accolade and description be distributed to the associated album article, House of Balloons, or to the recording artist's article, The Weeknd, where it doesnt seem to have any biographical relevance (in my opinion)? Feel free to comment here or at Talk:The Weeknd#Music.... Dan56 (talk) 17:34, 21 January 2013 (UTC)

Now that your request has been processed, and those categories deleted, it seems you left out two categories? category:Fighting type Pokémon‎ and category:Fictional reptilian Pokémon

"Too little content" in CfD nominations

If what you mean is "doesn't meet our standards for eponymous band categories", could you please say that? Mangoe (talk) 20:23, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

Okay Is it not clear why a category should be deleted? —Justin (koavf)TCM 20:25, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
It's not clear because we seem to be applying a stiffer standard for bands than we would elsewhere. Reference to this specific standard adds clarity to the discussion and warns off all of us who would otherwise apply other standards (e.g. we might call for merging the subcats into the category being nominated). Mangoe (talk) 20:33, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

"At My Most Beautiful"

Thanks for the feedback. Buckley makes a point of calling it the band's first "unabashed love song", comparing it to the more bitter, ironic "The One I Love" especially. In one of the articles I cited Stipe also comments that he had never made a conventional love song before.

By the way, all my work on that page is part of Wikipedia:WikiCup participation this year. How about you join up too? Signups are open til the end of the month. WesleyDodds (talk) 23:25, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

Incidentally, I decided to skim my books and see if "Be Mine" and "Strange Currencies" do indeed preempt "At My Most Beautiful" as capital letter Love Songs. Reading up on their backgrounds, I can see how they still wouldn't fit Stipe's criteria. "Be Mine" was partially assembled out of phrases taken from Valentine's candy hearts (at least Stipe says so), and after Scott Litt told the band that if they produced the song "the right way" it would be a huge hit, they decided to do the exact opposite. As for "Strange Currencies", well, I don't want to ruin that one for you unless you want me to. WesleyDodds (talk) 11:15, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
"Strange Currencies" is another obsession song. Stipe is portraying a character who can make things happen just by saying them. WesleyDodds (talk) 13:55, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Wonderful, Glorious, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page The Skinny (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Template:Pond

Um... would you please explain why you are repetitively tagging Template:Pond as "part of WikiProject Alternative music". --Epipelagic (talk) 10:42, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

The template is not about any of the various bands named "Pond", it's about the body of water, generally smaller than a lake. Please be more careful about your editing. Beyond My Ken (talk) 11:43, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
Pond (Australian band) The navbox there was misnamed, so all I ever saw was that it had a red "T" for its talk page... —Justin (koavf)TCM 15:37, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

Just a heads up... there is a tool - [toolserver.org/~dispenser/view/Reflinks] - that you can use to automatically convert bare links into templated ones. It may not get all of them, but it beats tagging for someone else to use it.

- J Greb (talk) 18:24, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

Reflinks I've seen that tool, but I don't personally care for it. Besides, tagging the pages helps other who use it find which pages need it. —Justin (koavf)TCM 22:23, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

Wikiproject Texas TFD

Thanks for letting us know that this deletion was occurring. You're supposed to let involved parties know that you've proposed the deletion, yet I see NO notice on the WP Texas talk page. Please be cautious in the future when fiddiling around with other projects banners as I know you'd be rightly irritated if the WikiProject Bahá'í Faith banner got so silently deleted. Hasteur (talk) 01:58, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

Okay First off, please don't be rude to me. What's the problem with the banner being deleted? Would you have left some kind of feedback? Why isn't it on your watchlist? —Justin (koavf)TCM 05:21, 27 January 2013 (UTC)
Sarcasm to try and get you to pay attention that technical wonkery "Under 100 transclusions" is secondary to the issue of being notified. If I were to nominate for deletion the Baha'i faith project banner, I'd notify the project's talk page so as to give them an opportunity to object. The banner wasn't on my watchlist becasue I'm primarily involved with one subproject (Dallas) but keep an eye on the Texas page. I only found out about the TFD after the fact when someone came around to remove the template from the WikiProject Texas page. Hasteur (talk) 17:56, 27 January 2013 (UTC)
Okay Please just say what you mean. I don't understand what the problem is here. What do you want from me? —Justin (koavf)TCM 08:07, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

Please revisit this discussion. The nominator's rationale has been thoroughly debunked with a large amount of clear proof, but you are still on record as supporting it. — SMcCandlish  Talk⇒ ɖכþ Contrib. 13:32, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

I'm not so sure about this "clear proof" business. Good Ol’factory (talk) 10:41, 29 January 2013 (UTC)

Howzzit? Can you give me a hand?

Watermarks Leah, it's always a pleasure to hear from you. Commons has commons:template:Watermark to notify users that it needs to be fixed. I am not a photo editing wizard, so I can't help there. As far as the cropping goes, I can do that. And I will now. —Justin (koavf)TCM 05:28, 30 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for your work on that frame removal. I hate to ask but I found the other Neil Young photo I uploaded from the same guy needing the same attention. If you could do it?... I'd forgotten the darned thing since whoever assembled the "Neil Young Portal" had used it, and so I left it alone to avoid repetition. It's here: [7]. Could you please consider it? Thanks~ --Leahtwosaints (talk) 21:49, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

LDS

Yo, Koavf, Latter Day Saints are Christians, but not Protestants. Most LDS would be quite horrified to be so categorized. Good Ol’factory (talk) 22:59, 31 January 2013 (UTC)

Really? This is news to me: LDS/Mormons are part of the broader Millerites/Adventist/Restorationist movement of the mid-19th century. I don't know anything about them not self-identifying with Protestants. —Justin (koavf)TCM 23:13, 31 January 2013 (UTC)
As relatively hard-core "Restorationists", they reject the authority of the Roman Catholic Church, but they also reject the authority of Protestantism, maybe even more, since they view it as one more step removed from the ultimate source of authority (Jesus). They don't claim to have been a "break-off" of any other Christian group, since they claim authority was delivered via Jesus's original Twelve apostles (in angelic form). In the past two decades, the Community of Christ (about 1–2% of Latter Day Saints) has been slowly moving towards self-identifying as Protestant, but not The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or Mormon fundamentalists. The Seventh-day Adventists have definitely gone the route of Protestantism, but not most Latter Day Saint churches. Good Ol’factory (talk) 23:18, 31 January 2013 (UTC)
Fair enough I knew that CoC was moving toward mainstreaming and that fundamentalists never will by definition, but I didn't realize that the self-designation was not as Protestants. C'est la vie. For what it's worth, if you're going to revert me, the Japanese category was already Protestant when I got there. If you want me to do the work, I can easily. —Justin (koavf)TCM 23:20, 31 January 2013 (UTC)
No problem, I don't mind doing it. Good Ol’factory (talk) 23:22, 31 January 2013 (UTC)
I think one of the issues has been that many Protestants are not terribly excited about acknowledging Latter Day Saints as Christians, let alone part of the Protestant world. Good Ol’factory (talk) 23:29, 31 January 2013 (UTC)
Sure I know that fundamentalists, some evangelicals, some mainline Protestants, and Reconstructionists would balk at non-Trinitarians being considered Protestants. What I did not realize is that Mormons/LDSers don't consider themselves Protestants. —Justin (koavf)TCM 23:30, 31 January 2013 (UTC)
Ah, yes. Here's one of the LDS Church apostles telling a story about how he was asked whether Mormons were Catholic or Protestant (first few paragraphs): [8]. Good Ol’factory (talk) 23:33, 31 January 2013 (UTC)

Restorationist Does that make them any different from other Restorationist/Adventist groups (other than those who have explicitly moved toward Mainline status)? —Justin (koavf)TCM 23:38, 31 January 2013 (UTC)

Those other Restorationist groups are probably the ones that are most similar to Mormons, so they are grouped within that group.
Categorization Fundamentally, there are three perspectives to bear in mind here and I'm not sure that any of them has a trump card: Mormons themselves, (other) Protestants, and third-party groups (e.g. religious studies scholars.) Considering how Mormons view themselves, (other) Protestants view Mormons, and how third parties view them can give us a perspective on what to do, but if as you say Mormons don't view themselves as Protestants, then I'm find with upmerging them to more generic Christians. —Justin (koavf)TCM 23:47, 31 January 2013 (UTC)
I'll search around some of the literature to get some third-party views. Good Ol’factory (talk) 23:51, 31 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi from Campus Ambassador for Illinois State University
