==Background== |
Aoife Ní Fhearraigh was born and brought up in the Gaeltacht area of Gweedore (known in Irish and officially as Gaoth Dobhair), she was the youngest in an Irish-speaking family and learnt many old Gaelic songs as a child. She was, and continues to be a member of the local choir at St. Mary's Roman Catholic church, singers Enya and Moya Brennan are also members and they influenced Aoife greatly. She attended Pobalscoil Ghaoth Dobhair and was very involved with music during her time there. In 1985, she appeared as an extra in the music video for "In A Lifetime" by Clannad and Bono, which was filmed in the Gweedore area. |
==Career== |
After releasing her début album, Loinneog Cheoil in 1991, which was recorded with Irish band Dervish, Ní Fhearraigh received an offer to perform an extensive tour of the Netherlands and since then she has toured Japan, United States, Germany, France, United Kingdom and Ireland. |
In 1996, she released her second album, Aoife, produced by Moya Brennan and Dennis Woods. The album featured local musicians and prominent Irish composers and also featured Belfast's Seoirse Ó Dochartaigh and Gweedore's Brídín Brennan on vocals. She also achieved international fame when her song "The Best Is Yet to Come" (sung entirely in Irish) was featured in the PlayStation game Metal Gear Solid, and again in the 3 title Metal Gear Solid 4, using an ingame iPod. |
Aoife has collaborated with a number of other singers. In 1999, she worked with Irish-American actress Roma Downey on her only ever album Healing Angel. She also recorded with Phil Coulter on three of his albums, Winter's Crossing (1998, also with James Galway), Highland Cathedral (2000) and Celtic Tranquility (2005). |
In 2003, Aoife recorded her third album, The Turning of the Tide on the high-profile Celtic Collections label, home to Celtic Woman, in much of Europe. Her most recent album, If I Told You, was released in 2006 in Banbridge, County Down with her husband and long-time collaborators. The album's success was average, although she has stated on her website that she "hopes to go full-time in music with her next album". |
