The '''A405''' is a main (dual-carriageway) road in [[Hertfordshire]]. Although now just five miles in length, it has been a longer road. As the ''North Orbital Road'', it occupied the section of the [[M25 motorway|M25]] from Junction 17 ([[Maple Cross]]) to the end of the spur to [[Watford]], now Junction 19 at ([[Hunton Bridge]]), it being one of the first sections of the subsequent M25 to open to the public. It then followed southwards, the route of the [[A41 road|A41]] as far as the junction with ''Kingsway'', turning eastwards towards [[Garston, Hertfordshire|Garston]], north of Watford, flowing into the old route of the [[A412 road|A412]] towards Chiswell Green and [[St Albans]], whilst linking with the [[M1 motorway|M1]] at Junction 6.
The A405 starts at a [[Grade separation|grade-separated]] roundabout junction with the A41 at Leavesden Green. From here, it travels northeast to a crossing with Sheepcot Lane at Woodside, then east to a [[traffic light]] junction with the [[A412 road|A412]] near [[Garston, Hertfordshire|Garston]]. This 1.4-mile (2.2-km) section is known as ''Kingsway''.

At junction 6 of the M1, the A405 becomes the [[Trunk road|trunk]] ''North Orbital Road'' and enters the borough of [[City and District of St Albans|St Albans]]. Northbound traffic on the M1 cannot access the M25 at junction 6a, a mile to the north, so M1 traffic has to access junction 6 and use the A405 to reach the M25, and M25 traffic has to use the A405 to reach the M1 south. To the east of this section between the M1 and M25 is the village of [[Bricket Wood]].
The A405 originally took up a greater proportion of the ''North Orbital Road''. From Park Street Roundabout, it travelled east, crossing the [[River Ver]] and the [[Midland Main Line]] before meeting the [[A6 road (England)|A6]] (now the [[A1081 road|A1081]]) at [[London Colney]]. The road meets the M25 at junction 21a. Joining the M25 anticlockwise here means you cannot access the M1 northbound at junction 21, as the slip road joins the M25 after the slip road from the M25 to the M1 northbound.

The A405 is a 4.8 miles (7.7 km) dual carriageway road in Hertfordshire, England, from the A41 at Leavesden Green, near Watford, to the A414 at Park Street Roundabout near St Albans.

Route

The A405 starts at a grade-separated roundabout junction with the A41 at Leavesden Green. From here, it travels northeast to a crossing with Sheepcot Lane at Woodside, then east to a traffic light junction with the A412 near Garston. This 1.4-mile (2.2-km) section is known as Kingsway.

From the A412, the A405 travels north, past West Hertfordshire Crematorium and Penfold Park Golf Course, to junction 6 of the M1 at Waterdale (2.3 miles, 3.7 km).

It then veers northeast, passing the village of Bricket Wood, before meeting the M25 at junction 21a (3.1 miles, 5 km).
