The event was met with negative criticism by reviewers and critics calling it one of the worse survivor series in history and most of it being the 2 matches which were known for the 7 on 7 divas elimination match which lots called one of the worst elimination matches in history and the other negative feedback on the main event between randy defending his wwe championship against big show which was voted as one of the worst matches of the year and one of the worst main events of all time.

The event received negative reviews with Wrestling Reviewer Jdfromny206 saying that it was one of the worse survivor series he has ever seen in his entire life and saying that it felt like another episode of Monday night raw and said it was not the type of survivor series that he grew up with and said it has constantly gotten worse and worse throughout the years and said no wonder Vince McMahon wanted to get rid of it a few years back and said if Vince McMahon actually took care of it and gave it the proper nerchering that it deserves then it would be a standout pay-per-view and said that every survivor series should needs to have at least 3 elimination matches you have one to open up the show then another in the middle of show then another at the end of the show but said no everything is a Monday night raw that you paid $60 dollars for and said that’s all survivor series 2013 was and said he felt sorry for those who had to spend and waste $60 on this garbage and said this is why people illegally stream PPV’s on the internet for free and don’t even bother buying it this is why this is why and he went on and praised the opening 5 on 5 elimination match saying that it was one of the best opening matches to a survivor series ppv and gave Cm punk and Daniel Bryan praise as well while matches like Del Rio Vs Cena for the world heavyweight championship, ryback Vs Henry, and others outside of the two matches he praised were highly negative and calling the main event awful while most gave it a zero and jdfromny206 gave the event 2/10 and saying that he was being generous.

The sportster went on and said and I quote “ Survivor Series 2013 was one of the worst Survivor Series in WWE history. Randy Orton and Big Show headlining the card in one of the worst WWE Championship matches made little sense to headline the show. The Viper was never going to lose this match and he retained his WWE Title.

John Cena and Alberto Del Rio's World Heavyweight Championship bout was a better option to go on last. Whilst Cena and Del Rio's matches weren't the greatest spectacles, they knew how to work with each other, and they produced a competitive match with Big Match John retaining his title. and praising the opening match while no other match could follow.

Kevin Pantoja from 411mania.com wrote that The fall of 2013 proved to be a brutal period at times. As they headed into the winter, the focus came off of the most popular babyface, Daniel Bryan, and instead, Big Show was thrust into the title picture. The Wyatt Family was fresh, John Cena had just returned and CM Punk was (unbeknownst to fans) on his way out of the company and went on and said and I quote “I thought this was a good but just shy of great Survivor Series tag. No real dead spots, some fun eliminations and the first real star making moment for Reigns. A really fun opening contest. ***¾ and praised the 5 on 5 elimination match between Rey Mysterio, The Rhodes Brothers (Cody Rhodes And Goldust) The Usos (Jey Uso & Jimmy Uso) Vs The Shield ( Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns & Dean Ambrose) And (The Real Americans Jack Swagger And Cesaro with Zeb Colter) and he gave the intercontinental championship match a 1/2 and said Technically, they didn’t do anything wrong. However, the crowd or commentators couldn’t have cared less and it showed. It felt more like filler than a title match. *½ and he graded the divas 7 on 7 elimination match and said A massive chunk of that match was sloppy. They threw too many girls in there so things got super rushed. When it slowed down and got to the Jojo stuff and everything after, it clicked. The crowd ate up the entire Jojo part. ½* next he graded ryback vs mark henry which was strongly negative as he gave it 1/2 and said Did they not book enough for this show? While it worked as a positive return for Henry, it effectively killed heel Ryback. Outside of the cross body, which made me giggle, this was dreadful. ½* next it was the world heavyweight championship match and praised the match and he gave credit and said These are two very good performers who almost never clicked in the ring. While this went a bit long, I found it to be one of their better matches. Focusing things around the arm was a great idea. Even though the outcome was obvious, I thought they did a good job of building drama. A bit more from the crowd before the climax would have helped the score. ***¼ while others called it great, fun, decent, average, awful, boring and terrible and praised the tag team match between CM Punk and Daniel Bryan in 16:51 and said Really good tag team match here. Harper and Rowan were always severely underutilized as a tandem, while Punk and Bryan just gelled excellently together. This worked very well in most aspects. Outside of their 2014 matches with the Usos and the Shield, this is the best you’ll find from Harper and Rowan. ***¾ and the main event was strongly criticized while most say it should’ve never happened or headlined the show and said nobody wanted to see they were infuriated and he went on and said “Well that was pretty boring. Both guys are veterans that know what they’re doing, however they’ve never really had any chemistry. Throw in the crowd not wanting this main event and tame “Viper” and you’ve got a recipe for disaster. He gave the match a * and said I’ve heard some people call this the worst PPV in WWE history. While it isn’t good by any means, that’s overdoing it. Three of the seven matches are good (opener, Punk and Bryan tag and World Title match), which instantly puts it over some other terrible PPVs. I do admit that everything else on the show is rather dreadful and boring.

Bleacher Report Praised Both The Tag Team Match giving the tag team match a *A And The 5 on 5 Elimination Match saying that the tag team match was Harper and Rowan played convincing beasts, providing the ultimate obstacles for Bryan and Punk. The contrast of the two teams' styles made for compelling action, and WWE is certain to take note of that. Expect more of these battles with how dramatic and physical this first round was. and said that the 5 on 5 elimination match nearly stole the show and gave the match a A+ and went and said This match was proof of how dramatic the elimination format can be. The opener had the power of a comeback and a variety of stars shining The babyfaces were rolling, but Reigns came charging back. He was made the biggest star of the bout, taking out four men on his own Mysterio, Rhodes and Goldust earned some loud reactions, contributing to an excellent bout that will be tough for the rest of the card to surpass. and the rest of the matches could not follow through as they said that the world heavyweight championship was This match looked a lot like their clash at Hell in a Cell, Del Rio attacking and Cena surviving While that bout had the benefit of uncertainty, predictability sucked some of the thrill from this one Del Rio was smugness personified and excellent in his viciousness. Their Survivor Series match had less of the energy and buzz of their last outing, but was still hard-hitting and dramatic enough to earn a high grade. and gave the match a A- and was negative on ryback vs mark henry match and the divas 7 on 7 elimination match saying that the divas elimination match saying that and I quote “ The match had no story, no drama until it was down to the last few Divas. There was seemingly one move before each elimination, the pace moving along too quickly to showcase any of the Divas It was the opposite of the Superstars elimination match—lifeless, forgettable JoJo's brief David and Goliath moment and AJ's speech were among the only highlights and giving the match a D- and Mark Henry Vs Ryback getting a C saying Ryback is thriving as a bully chuckling at his own jokes. His promo was more entertaining than the match, though Just like their WrestleMania 29 match, this wasn't the battle of two titans that WWE probably expected. It dragged despite being short It's great to have Henry back, just as long as WWE finds someone for him to work with who has more chemistry with him and fans were upset that the wwe was burying ryback. And the intercontinental championship match receiving a B- saying that Axel and Langston brought more aggressiveness for their rematch. Axel seemed desperate at moments, seeing his championship hopes crushed in Langston's powerful hands Being a bit short prevented this match from being a potential show-stealer, but both men gave good performances. Langston looks like a stronger champion coming out of this fight. and finally graded the main event giving it a C+ saying that and I quote “ The ending was something right out of an episode of Raw. It certainly didn't feel like the best way to cap off a main event bout Big Show struggled to move throughout the match, and a number of sloppy moments took away from the realism. All that buildup for this now seems like a waste Survivor Series had some excellent matches and created some lasting memories, but unfortunately, the show ended with disappointment If the showdown between Cena and Orton is a preview of the next marquee feud, WWE is showing just how out of touch it is. and saying “Revisiting that rivalry is one of the least appealing options available to the company and said Who won or lost the WWE Championship match Sunday night was inconsequential How the finish played out meant nothing What mattered was that The Big Show vs. Randy Orton was the main event of a major pay-per-view event in the year 2013 From the moment it looked like that was going to be the direction the company would be heading with the Authority angle, fans across the Internet spoke out against the match. "It's uninteresting," they said. "No one wants to see Big Show in that spot at this point in his career," they said Those fans were proven right during the broadcast, as Show and Orton delivered a truly uninspired, wildly uninteresting and historically bad main event match The "boring" chants infiltrated the bout early on, and later, chants for Daniel Bryan ensued The reaction, or lack thereof, of the fans in Boston echoed the thoughts of the fans who, for the last month, have complained about the prospect of watching the match play out Everything from the basic, boring match itself to the lackluster interference late in the match was met with great apathy That is not to say that champion and challenger did not work hard. The effort was there from both, but the execution of the match, the structure of the match and the story being told fell flat Given Show's limitations heading into the bout and what the company had to know was an audience that wanted nothing to do with the match, a specialty match of some sort would have gone a long way in helping achieve greater success As it stands, the match is almost certainly the worst pay-per-view main event since the cage match at No Way Out in June of 2012 Not so coincidentally, that match also featured Big Show.

Dave Meltzer from PWI graded matches with the highest being the opening match and the tag team match with The Miz vs. Kofi Kingston the kickoff 2.75 stars, The Real Americans and The Shield vs. Cody Rhodes, Goldust, Rey Mysterio, and The Usos 3.5 stars, Big E. Langston vs. Curtis Axel – WWE Intercontinental Championship, 1.25 stars Eva Marie, JoJo, Natalya, The Bella Twins and The Funkadactyls vs. AJ Lee, Aksana, Alicia Fox, Kaitlyn, Rosa Mendes, Summer Rae, and Tamina Snuka, DUD Mark Henry vs. Ryback, John Cena vs. Alberto Del Rio – World Heavyweight Championship 2.75 stars, CM Punk and Daniel Bryan vs. The Wyatt Family 3.5 stars, and with the main event for the wwe championship Randy Orton vs. The Big Show – WWE Championship which received 1 star.

Solomonster Said that The main event was horrendous and said that the crowd was quite evident when they were chanting boring, Daniel Bryan and we want bryan and he said Daniel Bryan was the most over guy in the main event and he wasn’t even in the match and he went on and said that the 7 on 7 divas elimination match went longer than the wwe championship main event which only lasted for 11:10 while the divas match only lasted for 11:29 and said it was only by 20 seconds and so and he said he couldn’t believe it and said it actually went longer than Orton vs big show and saying that looking at the main event it didn’t look that good at all and people saying it’s getting undue criticism it wasn’t a bad match it was a bad match and saying he’s seen randy orton have better matches and said frankly he’s seen big show have better matches and went on and said about the main event saying that it was boring, it was plotting and it was slow and said forget that crowd reaction the crowd crapped all over the match and said “ I just didn’t think that it was any good and said I don’t see how anybody else could think that that match was any good let alone the Finnish to the match. I’m and said throughout all the main events of 2013 he said he thought that big show vs randy orton was the worse one of all year.

Michael Hamflett from whatculture.com said and I quote “ The image above shows Roman Reigns celebrating as his team's sole survivor. He received a rapturous response, despite still being part of a heel Shield group that had spent much of the autumn terrorising beloved babyfaces Daniel Bryan and CM Punk. Imagine how chuffed Vince McMahon must have been to see his next Cena soaking up positivity at such an early stage? They couldn't miss with him... And what of Bryan and Punk? The oppressed pair were shoehorned into a listless doubles feud with The Wyatt Family in an angle ostensibly crafted to shoo them both away from rancid title pictures fans clamoured for their involvement in Cena and Orton were holding the World and WWE Championships respectively at the time, a month before fighting each other in a mishandled unification of the straps. Their victories that night over Alberto Del Rio and The Big Show were serviced with angered groans from the crowd, perhaps giving McMahon more pause to consider the ascent of his next champion ahead of WrestleMania. Two guesses as to names who weren't on his agenda. And praised the opening match and the tag team match. And the Buyrate was so bad that Big Show had to be punished some others are assuming while others saying it doesn’t matter and what matters is this was one of the worst survivor series in the history of WWE

The 2013 Survivor Series was the 27th annual Survivor Series professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event produced by WWE. It took place on November 24, 2013, at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. Eight matches were contested at the event, including one on the Kickoff pre-show.

The main event saw Randy Orton defeat Big Show to retain the WWE Championship. In other prominent matches, John Cena defeated Alberto Del Rio to retain the World Heavyweight Championship and CM Punk and Daniel Bryan defeated The Wyatt Family's Luke Harper and Erick Rowan.

The pay-per-view was the worst-selling edition of Survivor Series since the event's inception in 1987; this was attributed to a weak buildup.[3] It received 179,000 buys, down from 212,000 for the previous year's event; and attracted more than 100,000 fewer orders than the 2011 event, which generated 281,000 buys.

Production

Background

Survivor Series is an annual gimmick pay-per-view (PPV), produced every November by WWE since 1987. The second longest running pay-per-view event in history (behind WWE's WrestleMania), it is one of the promotion's original four pay-per-views, along with WrestleMania, Royal Rumble, and SummerSlam, referred to as the "Big Four".[4] The event is traditionally characterized by having Survivor Series matches, which are tag team elimination matches that typically pits teams of four or five wrestlers against each other. The 2013 event was the 27th event in the Survivor Series chronology and was scheduled to be held on November 24, 2013, at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts.[5][6]

Storylines

The professional wrestling matches at Survivor Series featured professional wrestlers performing as characters in scripted events pre-determined by the hosting promotion, WWE. Storylines between the characters played out on WWE's primary television programs, Raw and SmackDown.[7][8]

The main feud heading into Survivor Series featured Randy Orton and Big Show over the former's WWE Championship. Since returning from an injury in mid-August, Big Show had been speaking out against COO and the on-screen regime of Triple H and Stephanie McMahon and their mistreatment of several Superstars, especially Daniel Bryan. This put him at odds with "The Authority", and as a result, Big Show was continuously humiliated by Triple H and McMahon throughout September, and was obliged to knock out several other rebellious wrestlers, owing to a threat of being fired. At Battleground on October 6, Big Show interfered in a match between Orton and Bryan for the vacant WWE Championship, and knocked both competitors out, ruling out the match a no contest. The next night on Raw, he was fired from WWE by McMahon in storyline, but returned later that night to knock out Triple H in defiance. Big Show continued to "illegally" appear over the next several weeks on Raw, assisting Bryan, knocking out Raw general manager Brad Maddox, and costing The Shield's Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns their WWE Tag Team Championship. On the October 21 episode of Raw, Big Show announced he was filing a lawsuit against WWE for wrongful termination from his contract, and two weeks later won an "out-of-court negotiation" with Triple H and Stephanie over his lawsuit, and was rehired by WWE on the condition he promised not to sue them further and received a match against Orton for the WWE Championship at Survivor Series.

The event included two traditional Survivor Series elimination matches, the first of which saw the five-man team of The Shield (United States Champion Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, and Roman Reigns) and The Real Americans (Antonio Cesaro and Jack Swagger with manager Zeb Colter) face off against WWE Tag Team Champions Cody Rhodes and Goldust, Jimmy Uso and Jey Uso, and Rey Mysterio who made a surprise return on the November 18 episode of Raw. The second elimination match pitted Natalya, The Bella Twins (Brie Bella and Nikki Bella), The Funkadactyls (Naomi and Cameron), Eva Marie, and JoJo against Divas Champion AJ Lee, Tamina Snuka, Kaitlyn, Alicia Fox, Rosa Mendes, Aksana and Summer Rae. This match stems from AJ insulting Natalya and the rest for taking part in the Total Divas reality show.

The other world title in the company was also on the line at Survivor Series, as John Cena defended his World Heavyweight Championship against Alberto Del Rio. After suffering an elbow injury in August, Cena was to be sidelined from action for a minimum of four months. Despite this, SmackDown general manager Vickie Guerrero surprised then-World Heavyweight Champion Del Rio on the October 7 episode of Raw, by naming Cena as his opponent at the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view. At the event, Cena defeated Del Rio to win his third World Heavyweight title, and his fourteenth World title overall. A rematch between the pair was announced for Survivor Series in early November.

CM Punk (left) and Daniel Bryan allied together to feud with The Wyatt Family heading into Survivor Series

Another major rivalry pitted CM Punk and Daniel Bryan against The Wyatt Family, an enigmatic backwoods cult composed of Luke Harper and Erick Rowan, led by the faction's namesake, Bray Wyatt. Since their debut in July, The Wyatt Family had been targeting and attacking several wrestlers, including Kane, Kofi Kingston and The Miz, all in cause of Bray Wyatt exalting his character's preachings and ideals. On the October 28 episode of Raw, the Wyatt Family attacked Bryan backstage, and later attacked Punk in the ring. With Punk and Bryan aiding each other and showing resistance, their altercations with The Wyatts continued over the next several weeks on Raw and SmackDown, until an official match between the teams was announced for Survivor Series.

Also confirmed prior to the event was a match between Kofi Kingston and The Miz for the Survivor Series Kickoff pre-show. On the November 18 episode of Raw, during a match with The Real Americans (Antonio Cesaro and Jack Swagger), The Miz turned against his tag team partner, Kofi Kingston, and walked out of the match. This action allowed Swagger to apply the Ankle Lock on Kingston which he tapped out of giving the win to the Real Americans.

Also on the November 18, 2013, episode of Raw, Big E Langston defeated Curtis Axel to win the Intercontinental Championship, and a rematch was later confirmed for the pay-per-view.

Preliminary matches

The pay-per-view began with Triple H and Stephanie McMahon coming to the stage, with the two declaring they were allowing no interference in any match tonight.

In the first match, Cody Rhodes, Goldust, The Usos (Jey and Jimmy) and Rey Mysterio faced The Shield (Dean Ambrose, Roman Reigns, and Seth Rollins) and The Real Americans (Antonio Cesaro and Jack Swagger) in a traditional Survivor Series elimination match. Ambrose was eliminated by Rhodes with a roll up. Swagger was eliminated by Jey after a 619 by Mysterio, a Superkick by Jimmy and a Samoan Splash by Jey. Cesaro was eliminated by Rhodes with a roll up. Jimmy was eliminated by Reigns after a Spear. Rhodes was eliminated by Reigns after a Spear. Jey was eliminated by Rollins after a Curb Stomp. Rollins was eliminated by Mysterio with a Roll Up. Goldust was eliminated by Reigns after a Spear. Mysterio was eliminated by Reigns after a Spear, leaving Reigns as the sole survivor.

Next, Big E Langston defended the WWE Intercontinental Championship against Curtis Axel. Big E pinned Axel after a Big Ending to retain the title.

After that, Team Total Divas (Natalya, The Bella Twins, The Funkadactyls, JoJo and Eva Marie) faced Team True Divas (Divas Champion AJ Lee, Tamina Snuka, Kaitlyn, Alicia Fox, Aksana, Rosa Mendes and Summer Rae) in a traditional Survivor Series elimination match. Fox was eliminated by Naomi after a Split-Legged Moonsault. Cameron was eliminated by Mendes after Mendes tripped Cameron into a Turnbuckle. Mendes was eliminated by Nikki after a Bella Buster. Rae was eliminated by Nikki after a Running Single Leg Dropkick. Marie was eliminated by Kaitlyn after a Fireman's Carry Gutbuster. Naomi was eliminated by Kaitlyn after a Fireman's Carry Gutbuster. Kaitlyn was eliminated by Brie after a Missile Dropkick. Brie was eliminated by Aksana after a Divo Drop. Aksana was eliminated by Nikki after a Rack Attack. JoJo was eliminated by AJ after a Samoan Drop by Tamina. Tamina was eliminated by Natalya after submitting to the Sharpshooter. AJ was eliminated by Natalya after submitting to the Sharpshooter, leaving Natalya and Nikki as the survivors. Despite this, it was announced that Natalya was the sole survivor after commentator JBL said that Nikki had been eliminated.

Ryback came to the ring issuing an open-challenge, with Mark Henry answering the challenge. Henry pinned Ryback after a World's Strongest Slam to win the match.

In the fifth match, John Cena defended the World Heavyweight Championship against Alberto Del Rio. During the match, Cena attempted a Five Knuckle Shuffle on Del Rio but Del Rio performed a DDT on Cena for a near-fall. Cena attempted an Attitude Adjustment on Del Rio but Del Rio countered the move and performed a Bridging German Suplex on Cena for a near-fall. The match ended when Del Rio applied the Cross Armbreaker on Cena but Cena escaped the hold and pinned Del Rio after an Attitude Adjustment to retain the title.

After that, CM Punk and Daniel Bryan faced Luke Harper and Erick Rowan. During the match, Punk and Bryan performed a double Belly to Back Suplex on Rowan for a near-fall. Punk and Bryan performed a Hart Attack on Harper for a near-fall. Rowan performed a Running Splash on Bryan for a near-fall. Punk performed a Diving Elbow Drop on Harper for a near-fall. In the end, Bryan performed a Running Knee on Rowan and Punk pinned Harper after a GTS to win the match.

Main event

In the main event, Randy Orton defended the WWE Championship against Big Show. During the match, Orton attempted an RKO but Big Show countered and performed a Chokeslam on Orton for a near-fall. After the referee was knocked down, Big Show performed a KO Punch on Orton. The Authority distracted Big Show, allowing Orton to perform an RKO on Big Show. Orton pinned Big Show after a Punt Kick to retain the title. After the match, John Cena confronted Orton. Cena raised the World Heavyweight Championship whilst Orton raised the WWE Championship as the event ended.

Aftermath

The following night on Raw, WWE Champion Randy Orton came out to talk to The Authority (Triple H and Stephanie McMahon) about causing a distraction in his title defense against Big Show when he was interrupted by World Heavyweight Champion John Cena, who proposed a match against Orton to unify both world titles to determine the undisputed WWE world champion. Triple H agreed and made it a Tables, Ladders and Chairs match at TLC. Orton won the match and became the first WWE World Heavyweight Champion, which kept the lineage of the WWE Championship while the World Heavyweight Championship was retired.

Also later that night, The Shield (United States Champion Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, and Roman Reigns) faced three members of the opposing survivor series team members in Rey Mysterio and the WWE Tag Team Champions The Rhodes Brothers and were victorious after Ambrose pinned Cody Rhodes. Later that night, The Shield attacked CM Punk after Punk and Daniel Bryan won a match by disqualification against all three members of The Wyatt Family (Bray Wyatt, Luke Harper, and Erick Rowan), who would drag Bryan off before Punk was attacked by The Shield. As a result, two 3-on-1 handicap matches were set at TLC. Punk defeated The Shield while Bryan lost to The Wyatt Family.

On the December 2 episode of Raw, Natalya pinned AJ, to secure a victory for her team in a six-Diva tag team match. After this string of non-title wins, Natalya was officially announced to challenge AJ for the Divas Championship at the TLC event.

Another rematch was the 7-on-7 Divas Survivor Series Elimination Tag Team match would happen.

The 2013 Survivor Series was the last Survivor Series to include the World Heavyweight Championship, as at the following month's TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs event, the title was unified with the WWE Championship, which was renamed to WWE World Heavyweight Championship.[9]
