"(...) free flow of information is the only safeguard against tyranny."
Welcome! I'm C mon, a WikiHalfling. I study Political Science and Philosophy. Politically I'm on somewhere on the extreme left, I enjoy music and I'm queer.
World
|
I'm from the Netherlands. I'm not really deeply committed to that country, the only thing I really like about the Netherlands is that it's very open to the rest of the world: any Dutch pupil learns several language and the Dutch tend to travel around the world. I also indentify strongly with the European Union.
Education

Education
I study political science and philosophy. I'm specializing in institutionalism, political science methodology, philosophy of science and political philosophy. Furthermore I also work as an assistant for one of my political science professors. I think that theory of Arend Lijphart on consociational democracy is among the best of political science as is his Patterns of Democracy.

Politics
"Freedom without Socialism is Injustice, Privilege, Socialism without Freedom is Slavery, Brutality"
— Bakunin
"The lasting liberation of people from suppression, discrimination and poverty is the core of leftwing politics"
In the realm of grand theories and ideologies, I prefer to remain non-dogmatical and open:
- I like the philosophical foundations of anarchism (each human should be free from domination, to be master of his own life), but I dislike its implementation (violent revolution, unchecked power structures).
- Socialism for me is an outdated ideology. I will defend Marxism and try to explain its nuances to people, but the revolution is not coming and I do not expect that the bureaucracies ruling state-planned economies will ever be truely democratic. I am attracted to Analytical Marxism.
- Left-libertarianism sounds good in principle: free individuals in a political and economic system oriented at keeping them free, but I think free market economics, if left unchecked will lead to more unfreedom and unequality.
- Green politics is too underdevelopped to be a real alternative, although it adresses new themes and a new way.
- I like the ideas of cosmopolitanism, multiculturalism, environmentalism, egalitarianism, feminism, but realize that they can never be fully developed ideologies.
All in all my position is somewhere between libertarian-socialism or libertarian egalitarianism trying to non-dogmatically combine the best of each of these for maximum individual freedom
There are some issues I'm really keen on:
- I am an Euro-federalist. I believe that the EU can be a beacon of democracy, diversity and peace and show that states are an outdated way of organizing the world
- I am a pacifist, principally I'm against the use of any violence in solving conflicts between states. I attended demonstrations against the war Iraq and Afghanistan. The only war which might have been good is the NATO actions to stop the ethnic cleansing in Kosovo. I support a peaceful two-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Because of the terrors of the Shoah, I tend towards the Israelis and suppor the Israeli peace movement.
- I think the European states should focus more on international development, through micro-credits, opening their border for products from third world nations and debt relief.
- Seen the dangers of nuclear power, the instability of oil producing countries and global warming, alternative energy, especially wind and solar energy are the way to go.
- Industrial farming treats animals terribly, vegetarianism and organic farming are viable alternatives.
- I dislike cars and I think public transport offers an environmentally friendly and safe alternative.
- I think that any modern country should legalize same-sex marriage: the love between two people of the same sex is worth as much as two people from a different sex.
- The way European countries currently treat their muslem minorities is terrible: these groups which need our support because they form the lowest group in social and economic terms, are instead repressed and stigmatized because of their religion.
- A good education system is a motor for succesful emancipation of minority groups.
- I believe that every citizen (and in the end every world citizen) should receive a basic income so that all kinds of pensions, charities and benefits can be abolished. If this is implement a radical green tax shift can be implemented.
- I think it is everybody's fundamental right to decide over her own body, including to end it. Euthanasia and even the Drion's Pil should be legal.
- I fear European countries, even more than the United States, are turning into police states where individual freedom will be subjected for collective security. And as Benjamin Franklin said: "Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
- The Netherlands should become a republic instead of a monarchy.

Philosophy

Philosophy
"Wovon man nicht sprechen kann, darüber muss man schweigen."
I general dislike continental philosophy and am generally more interested in analytic philosophy.
Since my interest in philosophy mainly concerns political philosophy, my interests are reflected in the politics-section. I like the political philosophies of Rousseau, Dworkin and Rawls. I'm not a Marxist, but I will defend Marx' theories. I dismiss the anthropocentric and nationalist assumptions of contemporary philosophy.
On the important metaphysical issues (God, creation etc.) I prefer to remain agnostic, which is the only defensible philosophical position.

Art
When it comes to music I enjoy alternative rock in all its forms. I like 1970s rock operas especially Jesus Christ Superstar. I've attended a few music festivals and own a range of CDs. My favourite directors include Tim Burton (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), Sophia Coppola (The Virgin Suicides) and Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings). I also loved the movies Gattaca, V for Vendetta and Life Aquatic.
As for the more high brow arts. My favorite artists are Carel Willink, Giorgio de Chirico and Georges Braque. I don't like to read literature however, my favourite books include Character (Ferdinand Bordewijk), Nineteen Eighty-Four (George Orwell) and The Trial (Franz Kafka).
I'm interested in architecture and applied arts, like design. I love art nouveau/jugendstil and early 1900s architecture, especially the Nieuwe Zakelijkheid.
Finally, mainly because there is no other section where this fits, when I have the time I like to play computer games like Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri; and fantasy games like Magic: the Gathering and D&D. I've also seen most Star Trek and I consider DS9 the best science fiction ever made, Firefly was the only potential successor of DS9, but was cancelled way to soon. I'm also mesmerized by Lost.

I live together with my boyfriend, several other friends and my cat in a studentenhuis. My user name was made up by my brother when I was 12, when I got my first e-mail address. It involved a slight change to my real name. What my real first name is, is left as an exercise to the reader. Since then I've been using part of that login as a user name. You can call my anything you want c'mon, c_mon or c mon.

As for Wikipedia:
- I'm a WikiHalfling
- I like writing structured articles. My articles on Dutch parties and politicians are very structured and I want to keep them that way.
- I dislike edit disputes and try to make my point on talkpages.
- I write what I know and I know what I write. My specialization here is Dutch political parties, I am confident about what I know in this field, furthermore I am surrounded by books on the subject.
- I don't like tagging stuff, especially "this article has no categories" when I see them I will try to put the article into the right category
- I don't like stubs. I try not to write them. My opinion is: if you have something to say, say it, if you don't don't. Therefore sometimes I prefer lists, like politics of the Netherlands (terminology).
- I like categories, because they bring order to the project.
- I think notability is an important in keeping this encyclopedia somewhat manageable. Therefore I advocate weak deletionism.
- I also love navigation templates, for the same reason.
- From a sociological perspective I'm interested in wikipedia and its users: who are they? what values do they have? Is working on this pseudo -anarchist encyclopedia (it is an interesting debate what wikipedia actually is (see m:power structure) associated with particular political views. I did some preliminary research, which was published here by User:Jonathan Stokes. One can also find it User:C mon/wikipedians by politics. Some call it a rigorous method, I doubt that, because 26 respondents with useful information is a very smal group.
I think my best articles include:
- Politics of the Netherlands
- Femke Halsema
- GreenLeft
- DWARS
- European Green Party
- Communist Party of the Netherlands
- Pacifist Socialist Party
- Social Democratic Workers' Party (Netherlands)
- Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Netherlands)
- Socialism in the Netherlands
I'm working on the following projects (in order of priority)
- Write a good article on each Dutch political party which has ever got parliamentary representation (work in progress, see below).
Write an article for each GreenLeft MP.- Write a substantive article for each Dutch ministry (5 down, 8 to go).
- Make the articles surrounding Politics of the Netherlands work.
- Re-write the article Political party on basis of my courses in political parties and party systems.
- Re-write and merge the articles on green politics, especially Green politics, Worldwide green parties, List of Green party issues and greens and Free-market environmentalism, Natural capitalism, Green liberalism and Eco-capitalism.
- Make Dutch general election, 2006, Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Femke Halsema featured article.
I'm somewhat active on other projects:
- nl:gebruiker:c_mon, where I focus on Dutch political parties;
- q:nl:gebruiker:c_mon, to make transfers from nl.wikipedia;
- q:en:user:c_mon, to make transfers from en.wikipedia;
- s:en:user:c_mon, to make transfers from en.wikipedia;
- Finally, in a fit of insanity I also wrote one uncylopedia article (on [1]);
