Takata lost his younger sister Summer to a car accident in 2003 when she was only 19. Three years later, while living and training in Harlingen, Tex. he decided to get a tattoo of her on his left shoulder and upper arm. Before getting the tattoo, he discussed the idea with his mother Mae and father Gary. Originally they were against the idea, but then agreed. It is a tribute to her that they all now appreciate. Takata has a younger sister Toby as well.

Before getting the tattoo, he discussed the idea with his mother Mae and father Gary. Originally they were against the idea, but then agreed. It is a tribute to her that they all now appreciate. Takata has a younger sister Toby as well.

He is now trying to adopt a more attacking style, likening it to the way a predator stalks his prey. He and coach Eddie Liddie work a lot on visualizing this persona on the mat.

State champion In 2000, while a student at Iolani High School, Takata won a state championship in wrestling. He also played soccer while growing up, and is a self-professed TV junkie, calling Discovery's "The Deadliest Catch" his favorite show. He also loves to watch the Food Network and sports, especially his favorite team, the Boston Red Sox.
