On the night of January 7, 2009, a riot occurred in and around downtown Oakland, California, after the funeral of Oscar Grant who was [[BART Police shooting of Oscar Grant|shot]] by a BART police officer at the BART station in the Fruitvale district of East Oakland. Two cars were set ablaze and several storefronts were vandalized, including having their front windows smashed in. The riot sprung from a protest that began in Fruitvale and marched several miles to Downtown Oakland, where things became violent. Rioters pushed a flaming dumpster into an Oakland Police car, shattering its windshields. Police were able to clear the streets before midnight, using tear gas and arresting several people. |
