The Speedway Bombings

The Speedway Bombings occurred in 1978 in Speedway, Indiana, USA. There were three bombs on the night of September 1st 1978, placed in trash cans and dumpsters. Single bombs exploded on the following two nights. On September 5th a parked Speedway police cruiser was blown up. On September 6th a gym bag, left in the parking lot of Speedway High School after a football match, exploded. One of the parents, Carl DeLong, 39, was severely injured and one leg was subsequently amputated. He lived the rest of his life in pain from his injuries and the shrapnel that remained in his body. He committed suicide on February 23rd 1983.

The Speedway Bomber

After 3 trials, ending in 1981, Brett C. Kimberlin, was convicted of the Speedway bombings, illegal possession of explosives, and impersonating a Department of Defense security guard. He was sentenced to 50 years in prison. He had earlier been convicted of drug trafficking in Texas following an arrest on February 16th 1979. Kimberlin was a person of interest in the murder of Julia Scyphers, 65, on July 29th 1978. That case remains unsolved. Carl DeLong's wife Sandra, also injured in the bombing, won a $1.6 million judgment against Kimberlin in civil court. Kimberlin was paroled in 1994, but as a result of his efforts to avoid paying the DeLong judgment, his parole was revoked in 1997. He was released in 2001.

Kimberlin and Dan Quayle

Kimberlin gained notoriety in 1988 when, during the election campaign, he claimed to have sold marijuana to Republican vice-presidential candidate, Dan Quayle, when Quayle was a law student.

Current Activity

Kimberlin now operates a non-profit organisation, Justice Through Music (JTM), that has received funding from George Soros' Tides Foundation, and Barbara Streisand, and also supports the Occupy movement through an entity called "Velvet Revolution".
