Ayam ketawa or the Laughing Chicken is a breed of chicken originating from the area of Sidenreng Rappang in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. It is one of several long-crowing breeds of chicken prized highly for the clarity and unusual length of their crows; in addition, the Ayam ketwa has the unusual characteristic of their crow resembling a human laugh which has made them highly prized. The breed was originally held as a status symbol of the Bugisese royal family, but has entered into higher popularity in recent times since the fall of the monarchy.[1] Today it is still seen as a symbol of courage, social status and heroism[2][3] and they compete in highly contested contests for the most perfect crow, for the Governor of Sulawesi Cup.[4]
Names
The breed is various known as the Laughing Chicken, Ayam ketawa (literally laughing chicken) or Ayam gaga, and Manu' Gaga' or just Gaga' (literally Stammering Chicken) in Buginese.[5]
