KFXX (1080 kHz), known as "1080 The FAN", is an AM radio station broadcasting from Portland, Oregon. It is owned by Entercom Portland LLC and runs sports radio programming.[1] The studios are located south of downtown Portland, and the transmitter site is in the northeast side along the Columbia River. KFXX is a class B radio station. By day, it runs the maximum power for commercial AM stations in the U.S., 50,000 watts, audible around much of northwest Oregon and southwest Washington. But at night, because 1080 is a clear channel frequency, KFXX must reduce power to 9000 watts, so it does not interfere with sister stations KRLD in Dallas and WTIC in Hartford, Connecticut, the two dominant Class A stations on the frequency. The station is best known for being the original home of The Herd with Colin Cowherd before being picked up by ESPN Radio for national broadcast.
Programming
KFXX is an affiliate of ESPN Radio but mostly runs its own local shows on weekdays. Its sister station, 910 KMTT, carries most of the ESPN Radio lineup. KFXX starts the day with "Dusty and Cam" from 6 to 9 a.m. At 9, it carries Colin Cowherd from the Fox Sports Radio Network. (Cowherd had been an ESPN Radio host for many years.) At noon, KFXX airs "Dirt and Sprague." "Primetime with Isaac Ropp and Jason 'Big Suke' Scukanec" is heard on weekday afternoons from 3 to 7 p.m. The first three hours of "Primetime" are simulcast on Comcast SportsNet Northwest. After 7 p.m. weeknights, KFXX runs programming from ESPN Radio.
History
This station was first licensed as KFWV, which began operations on October 12, 1925. In 1927 the call sign was changed to KWJJ, incorporating the initials of the station's founder, Wilbur J. Jerman. KWJJ became Portland's ABC Radio affiliate in 1959 and adopted a country music format on March 1, 1965.[2]
In August 1985, KWJJ began to simulcast some of its programming on KWJJ-FM 99.5, which also adopted a country music format. KWJJ-AM dropped its simulcast of KWJJ-FM in 1995, becoming an affiliate for ABC's Real Country, a classic country service.[3]
On October 27, 1997, the call sign was changed to KOTK, with a format change to "hot talk" as "Hot Talk 1080 KOTK."
The KFXX call letters were first used in the Portland market on "The X", a hard rock station on 1520 AM. KFXX flipped to its current sports format on September 1, 1990.[4] KFXX and its sports format moved to AM 910 on March 29, 1998 (swapping frequencies with adult standards-formatted KKSN), then swapped frequencies with hot talk-formatted KOTK on March 19, 2004.[5]
In its early days, one of its hosts was Neil Lomax, a former quarterback at Portland State University and the St. Louis/Phoenix Cardinals.
